Really enjoy your videos and learn a lot from you. If I may offer you something from my experience, Keep the resting tool away while using the saw. I broke sum teeth of my saw because of this mistake. By the way when I make a box like this I use a piece of leather (from an old belt) to avoid damaging the putter's catch. All the best .. Great turning, as always. That depth of hollowing is beyond my current ability. Not ashamed to use Forstners where I need to. About the design, it makes me appreciate the way things used to be done. Sealing a container, in this case. I've used standard size canning jar seals, before. It does limit size variation, somewhat. But people like the idea of a replaceable seal. But I want to make a stash jar for myself, in your design. :)

Beautiful piece! The inner lid is such a nice touch. I noticed when you were hollowing that you had the tool rest above center and the scraper angled down. Will that work with a carbide tool? That looks like you can get a bad catch. I’m still learning and your videos are very informative, thank you.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning8 күн бұрын
Honestly I don't use carbide tools but from What I know they are scrapers as well and they need that negative angle otherwise they will catch like standard scrapers. By tilting down tool slightly (in video its more then needed) you assure negative angle from top of the cutter to wood you are scraping.

27:07 I held my breath, certain that your saw would hit the tool rest. Couldn't tell. Watched it again but looked at the wood dust on the rest. Yep, I knew it.😁
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning8 күн бұрын
True, but it was only a light touch and no damage to rest, that saw is quite soft😉

Hi.whats the best finish coating?so the tea will not get any smell from it?
@bobraasch86999 күн бұрын
You may wish to try shellac, once dry the sealed container should not transmit odor to contents.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning8 күн бұрын
Oil is fine, any finish really even a non sealed wood should be ok.... as long its normal.woods like maple,ash,pear instead of something like teak or zabrano that has really distinct smell
@alextopfer10689 күн бұрын
Do you pay any attention to the exact speed when turning? I always just go off feel, not a numerical value

Just by feel,vibration, sound, but I never watch exact number or go by formula

Hi Tomislav. Fantastic video as usual. however i do have one criticism. I notice that you are often bring in new tools that haven't been seen before - ie the scrapper in this video. this a tool that I personally have not seen in any other of your videos. I have been turning for 20 years and I do not have the arsenal of tools that you have at your disposal
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning3 күн бұрын
Thanks Terry, well as woodturners we do accumulate tools over the years, its just square end scraper only a bit thicker, so not you what you trying to say? Honestly I won't apologize for having tools which I payed or got with extremely hard sacrifice and hard work. Its like saying to mechanic that he should not use proper lift because some other mechanic doesn't have it. Thanks for watching as always 😀

What is the purpose of the inner lid? Can I buy you some new gloves?
@AndrewMoizer10 күн бұрын
He mentioned a while ago that he cut the fingers off on purpose. So they are probably now nicely broken in.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning8 күн бұрын
As Andrew said, I did cut those on purpose as I can't wear gloves without any finger feel. And although these have several rips in it ,they are still ok , but I do appreciate offer😉
@markduggan345110 күн бұрын
Your skill is undeniable, but forgive me for asking why two lids?
@nemoemanon667910 күн бұрын
This confuses me as well. An inner lid seems to have no purpose to me. It looks nice and uses the excess tenon material but that’s all.
@AndrewMoizer10 күн бұрын
I’m assuming to give more of a seal to keep the tea fresh. I’m trying to figure out whether it’s a great idea, or something that would get old in a hurry having to take two lids off for every pot of tea. When you drink is much as we do, this could be significant 😅. That being said, it’s a very elegant solution, and something I’m hoping to try. I have enough dead and dying ash trees due to the Emerald Ash borer that I would never run out of wood in my lifetime.
@naturaIIydifferent10 күн бұрын
It's for freshness. Even though the outer lid is well fitted, the inner lid helps to keep the air out of the tea.
@tomislavtomasicwoodturning8 күн бұрын
I think its mostly for freshness, I know Japanese make these kind of caddies and tgey have this inner lid, so client wanted something similar as well... but don't quote me on that😀😀
