The 0 Series Shinkansen, also known as the "Dream Super Express," was born as the world's first high-speed railway that laid the foundation for today's Shinkansen, and is still talked about as the face of the Shinkansen. It is a figure from 1964 to 1993.
It first appeared with the opening of the Tōkaidō Shinkansen in time for the Tokyo Olympics in 1964, and since then, it has been used heavily as a dream super-express for 44 years (although it probably wasn't the first train set to run). It is the heroic bullet train that continued.
The operation was "Hikari" and "Kodama", and there was also a dedicated formation called "West-Hikari" only in the Sanyo Shinkansen. What is surprising is that from 1964 when the 0 series started running to 1985 when the 100 series started running, it continued to run alone on the Tōkaidō and the San'yo Shinkansen, which continued to extend.
When the Tōkaidō Shinkansen opened, cars with large windows were used, and a fixed 12-car train was assembled. The train consisted of 2 green cars and 2 buffet cars, and the dining car was added in 1974, the year before the opening of Hakata. In 1970, six years after its opening, the "Hikari'' train set was expanded to 16 cars, and later the ""Kodama'' train set was expanded to 16 cars, but the dining car was only connected to the ``Hikari'' set.
Initially, the same train set was used for both Hikari and Kodama, but the train set was separated in 1966, and one green car of the Kodama was a normal car (at that time, a first class car and a second class car). ).
The name of the organization was named after the company that produced it when it first appeared, with N for Nippon Sharyo, K for Kisha Seisaku, K for Kawasaki Sharyo from R for River, and S for Short for Kinki Sharyo. Symbols such as S, Hitachi, H, and Tokyu Sharyo Manufacturing, T, were given.
With the opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen line in Okayama in 1972, the "Hikari" formation was changed to the H (Hikari) formation, and the 16-car "Kodama" formation was changed to the K (Kodama) formation.
-After 1976, the [Hikari] formation composed only of small window 1000 series was N (New) formation, and the [Hikari] formation with large window cars and small window cars mixed and the leading car was 1000 series NH ( New Hikari) formation, and the first car with a large window was changed to the H formation.
With the timetable revision in 1985, some of the [Kodama] formations became 12-car formations, and if the leading car had a small window, it would be an SK (Short Kodama) formation, and if the leading car had a large window, it would be an S (Short) formation. In the same year, a 6-car formation appeared as a formation dedicated to Kokura and Hakata, and the R (Rokuryo-6-car) formation was formed. These organization symbols have been inherited by JR Central and JR West after the privatization of JNR.
Speaking of the 0 series' characteristic, it's definitely the head car with a ball nose. This design is said to have been designed by Mr. Tadanao Miki, who was in charge of the land attack aircraft "Ginga" developed during the Pacific War, and it seems that the top part of the aircraft was assigned to the 0 series to increase speed.
And the eye-catching thing on the car body is the number of pantographs. Two cars are regarded as one unit, and one pantograph is installed, so a total of 8 pantographs will be extended when 16 cars, which is an unthinkable number today. In addition, the 0 series was not equipped with the "extra-high voltage lead wire" that is now commonplace, in other words, the structure was like this because there was no electricity from other units, and moreover, as soon as the wire was disconnected from the overhead wire due to wind blowing, etc. There was an arc discharge, or spark. This is one of the reasons for the Shinkansen noise problem, and it was always annoying. Well, Panta-Spark is also synonymous with the 0 series.
By the way, at the time of its introduction, it was not called "0 series", it was called only "Shinkansen". Well, there were only 0 series, so you can easily understand the Shinkansen.
From 1964 to 1986, it ran at a maximum speed of 210 km/h, and after that it ran at 220 km/h, but it was far from the speed of the 500 series and N700. But it was the fastest car at the time.
However, with the deployment of the 100 series, 300 series, 500 series, and 700 series of successor trains, the 0 series gradually narrowed its field of activity and withdrew from the Tōkaidō Shinkansen in 1999. The formation was shortened to 6 cars, 4 cars, and in 2008 it was completely retired and finished its role as the foundation of high-speed rail.
Vehicles with large windows that continued to run from the time of opening were connected until around 2001.
