That's what I appreciate with Bonzo. Also, I discovered another one of his secrets one day. It's one of those black swans that you don't see if you're not looking for it, but once you see it, you can't unsee it. Here's what it is: Bonzo had perfect pitch. He may not have even been aware of it, but I was listening to him solo and there were a few moments where he had hit every drum and left them all ringing... that's when I realized that not only were his drums well tuned, but they were tuned to a perfect chord. There was no dissonance. That's not an accident.

At this level all drummers are equally good, main difference would be the style of music preferred by the particular taste of the listener. There are great drummers in all the musical spectrum, it is pointless to state who's the fastest, strongest, the best...those are just labels, adjectives without meaning. Any musician regardless the instrument, style or technics, will be successful as long as people like what is brought through those fingers, hands or lips. Music this good is more to be enjoyed rather than analyzed.

I started learning to play guitar as a young teenager. I’ve been playing off and on for half a century. A few decades ago I wanted to learn more about drumming just because I love music. When I was ‘messing’ around (sorry but I was pretty messy to start) on drums I bought a video training tape with Mr. Gadd! He totally blew me away. His drumming and drum rudiments and drum solos just on their own merit sounded like music to me. It was strange to encounter because I thought a drummer was there to keep the beat for the rest of the group. That is still true but this guy seemed to have something different. Now remember I’m not really a drummer so maybe I’m way off base…. No insults to any musicians.

@robertbruner74293 жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree. Drumming isn't a sport where mathematical statistics can be compiled. At the top end of the spectrum issues of power, meter, musicality etc. are tools these drummers incorporate into a unique style . Dave Brubeck said that one day Joe Morello and Buddy Rich had a "drum battle" that lasted all day, and I'm sure they both came away from that learning a lot from each other . I always thought Joe excelled in musicality where Buddy exceeded in raw power. Steve Gadd has a beautiful approach to drums...he's never a showoff, and only steps into the spotlight when it will benefit the music. I suspect any of the drummers at their level could imitate the others in a way that would be difficult to detect a blind listening test ---if they wanted to, but instead they take those tools and apply them to a style that's unique to who they are as human beings, the essence of all art.

jim devlin There is no such thing as silence unless you're deaf. Not so-called "silence" but artful restraint is "music." Music is metaphorical language just like the very first word you learn. The very first word human beings learn is already metaphorical and therefore using a process of "artistic transference." Mathematics, the so-called language of "science" and "the natural world" is also metaphorical and always learned by humans after they learn basic verbal language. Hence, the deep need of humans for creative work in art and science, because without this creative and always non-conformist and "outside-the-box" process of metaphor expansion, you cannot escape the prison walls of each era's previously achieved and commonly accepted "linguistic legislations" or "methods of human communication" and through these new and every-truer and valid forms molded out of human consciousness, grow in spirit and progress.

Templar Knight I have heard of Dave Weckl. We're from the same town (uncle went to high school with him) and I've seen him many times. It's all personal preference.

Gadds got grooves loved his 70s stuff but no one is better than Neil Peart!!
@mrshankly2133 жыл бұрын
You mean Peart is your favourite? Great drummer, but there is no "number 1 top drummer" there are the greats, and those beneath them. Although the greats are such awesome people, they will say no one is beneath them.

There is no such thing as a "number one drummer". There are many ways to express yourself as a drummer. He is great at what HE does, but there are many others that are great at what THEY do.

Agree with other posters. Once god level is attained.....they all exist on the same level, just with different styles. Except Buddy Rich. Because he actually gave me a seizure while watching him.
@ghostrider26645 жыл бұрын
....and I recently watched a Buddy Rich video again. Now I'm dead. Yes, dead. Buddy Rich was so good, he actually killed me. Cheers from the afterlife, where I am busy hunting down Buddy Rich. If I kill him in the afterlife, does...he regenerate on Earth?.....hmm...

same happened to me with Simon Phillips, except for that whole “dead” thing. Would’ve been, but the paramedics didn’t know about my DNR.

I agree it is difficult if not impossible to judge who are the best in their field, but when it comes to drummers that is one category that stands out above all and that is the undoubtedly buddy rich, and I am a guitar player. all the best drummers quake in their boots when his name is mentioned.

Buddy rich can only swing. Gadd can do anything
@herrfriberger58 жыл бұрын
Funny. Swing is exactly what Gadd can't do well. I've heard him do jazz walz pretty decent though (with B.R. big band!). In my world (this is about personal taste...), Buddy Rich can actually be really funky, while Steve Gadd is just stiff and boring, with the same cramping paraddidles for half a century. To me, it's almost embarrassing to watch. And Buddy Rich is not even my favorite drummer, far from it, among the literally thousands of really really great drummers, all around the globe. (There is more than the USA.)
@Gazuka8 жыл бұрын
Sven Ekeberg Are you stupid? Gadd does swing extremely well. He's not the best in the world but he is one of the best out there. Gadd has more originality than any other drummer out there

Taste, timing, groove, and knows when not to play. Not the fastest...but so what. It's really tiring to see drummers where all they do is speed drumming.....Besides, I dont think drum solos are the shit. As a drummer myself, I try to keep any solos to a bare minimum. The tastier stuff is done within the song...IMO.
@jojoUK1206 жыл бұрын
latotayporota personally I could stand a longer solo when the band is supporting the groove so you’ve got something to respond to- but when does that happen these days?
