@@p__7000 if it didn't have drums the song would sound "empty"
@ninjabuck25764 жыл бұрын
@@p__7000 While I understand the general idea of your comment, I would like to ask for some perspective. Considering that drums cannot create "melodies" per se, or would be limited to tones coming from 3 toms and a snare, and could not sustain said tone for a considerable length of time, can you give me examples of a melodic drummer drumming over music such as this? As a drummer, I offer my personal perspective: Technicality IS Melody when it comes to drumming. We could take a standard 2 & 4 rock drummer. The guitarists equivalent to this type of drummer would be a person playing the same 2 power chords on 1 & 3. Or we could take Larnell Lewis. His guitarists equivalent might be someone like Pat Metheney. A drummer who is technical enough to control dynamics, display hand and foot control, insert regular and ghost notes, AND do it in the midst of a more atmospheric album such as this one would be considered incredibly musical by many musicians. One last way I view the album is plentiful groovy drums *on display* within atmospheric melodies. Larnell Lewis drumming for Snarky Puppy could be described as plentiful drums *fitting within* note heavy music. Thomas Pridgen drumming for The Mars Volta can be described as a bunch of drums, *drumming* over a bunch of guitars and other loud stuff. I enjoy all 3 ways these drummers played because all 3 added tasteful musicianship to great albums.
@david_king_music4 жыл бұрын
@@p__7000 drums definitely create melodies - the kick, snare, toms, hats and rides are all at different pitches, deliberately tuned - think of it as a countermelody to everything else going on and it adds richness, detail and interest. If you can't hear that way, then the more obvious way to hear would at least be rhythmic counterpoint to what's happening in the bass and lead melody. Back to your main idea, that you don't like the drumming: I think the drumming could either be interpreted as interesting or 'busy' depending on your preference. Certainly he doesn't allow for much "space" but since he seems to have a more 'driving' or 'intense' rhythmic idea he wants to express, I don't think he's wrong... the other option, I think, is more stereotypical "neo-soul", the "pocket loop" with very few details, this seems fresher to me.

@@wasimoto_7540 No I'm pretty sure on this board he has an OC2, a pitch shifter (he has a bigger pedal on this board, could be a POG2) and a chorus pedal (possibly the blue one furthest left) For the part he's playing in the opening, I'm pretty sure he has the pitch shifter and the chorus on, which creates the movement in the note. The OC2 can be heard at parts like 1:01 where a lower octave is added.
