As a case study to keep in mind - I’m in my mid 50’s and had no workout stretching routine because I was “active” and used to lift free weights 20 years ago 😅. Funny then I noticed playing fetch with the dogs I would slow down the closer I reached to the ground for a ball. So I found I lost mobility the hard way due to stiffening muscles which then tears ligaments. When I tried to do what I did before I literally caused injuries due to blind denial of being older. Some injuries unknowingly developed over time like sacrificing my lower back compensating not bending my legs like before such as picking something up off the ground or while surfing. Then a more immediate injury over months when I tore my shoulders up requiring rotator cuff surgery from lifting heavy home gym weights and bulky objects above my head or outstretched on my off-road roof rack. Almost every guy I know has back pain but surprisingly also shoulder pain - yet no one warned me about shoulder health and aging until it was too late. We simply don’t know what it feels like to age so we don’t even recognize it because our mind is still young. I now have to stretch multiple times every day. My go to is kneeling in front of a bench arching my spine while pushing my elbows behind my head so my hands touch my back - the popping sounds like firecrackers haha. I also use the stairs and railing for deep lunges, squats, and hanging. Meanwhile I just started what I call physical therapy exercising at home using light weight/bands with my wife and love it - thanks to your videos!

I didn't start lifting "heavy" until my forties. Within 12-18 months, I was up to doing sets of 10 reps with 500 lb barbell. Think about spending time first, strengthening your tendons, the muscles will follow.

The beauty of calisthenics, I've adjusted every 5 years on average after 30. I'll continue until I die 😊

Great chat guys 🙂. Just to add another issue for older females ie menopause and how the hormone changes affect many functions of the body. I’m way past that stage at 76 but strength training is crucial to keep muscle mass and, at the same time, stress bones to keep them strong. One of the other important issues for men and women is the increasing prevalence of falls as people age so strength and mobility training are key to prevent them. We all die eventually (sorry Jenni) but I aim to pop my clogs as fit and healthy as I can be. 💪😂
