Neither one taught the other, we travelled Australia as a band in the 60s with Tommy on rhythm, Phil on the lead guitar, brother Chris on the drums and Virginia on the Steel guitar. the were first named the Emmanuel Quartette, then The Midget Surfaris, and formed another band in Parkes NSW called the Trail Blazers. I am Virginia

I always thought that Phil Emanuel was the better guitarist as an Aussie who 1st saw em play Duelling Banjo's on TV as a kids act. Saw Goldrush & The Emanuel Brothers multiple times. In my opinion Phil was always the better guitarist as I saw The Emanuel Brothers & Goldrush multiple times as a kid in concert in OZtralia. Love em! Vale Phil Emanuel RIP mate

I used to go and watch the Emmanuel brothers Wizz band (Tommy & Phil) in the 1980s atround Sydney. The first time that I was then was around 1984 at the Horden Pavilion. They cam out and said in unision, "Hie We are the Emanuel Brothers and we are going to play our arses off". And just like that, I was hooked.

I discovered Tommy about 10 years ago. I was literally shocked that I had never heard of or seen him before. And now , just a few days ago I learned about Phil and realized I've missed so much. I always threw Tommy's name in the polls for goat guitarist. Recently I discovered Andy Mckee and now released there's no answer to the question. I recall hearing Glen Campbell in an interview one time when asked if he felt like his extreme talent on guitar h ad been the key to his success in Nashville. He replied that absolutely mind blowing guitarist were a dime a dozen in Nashville and luck probably had more to do with it!

Back in '74 I bought a Guild F-50 custom. I was working on the door of the Texas Tavern in Kings Cross and Tommy was a frequent late-night visitor. That Friday night he strolled in with his guitar case and I pulled out the new Guild. We played 'Duelling banjos; with me on his Maton and him on my shiny brand-new Guild. He still wants it!

That was a classic video. That is a big part of what music is about. I am so far removed from my guitar but this might inspire me to find it, find my rockman and a mike and our stereo and do a bit of low budget recording until I can get a Strat.
