@@antiteroristickejedinicepo4830 Yes, Marciano seems to have been the only heavyweight who knew that the arms are a target. It always kills me when these big punchers get close and then do nothing but slap ineffective punches off each other's gloves before the ref separates them. When you get in close like that, punch the ARMS!!! Punch the upper arm and just below the elbow, and you'll see openings in no time. This was the mistake every fool who ever faced Ali's rope-a-dope made. If Foreman had had the least imagination in their fight, he would have stopped aiming for Ali's head and said, "Covering up? Thank you very much. I'm gonna do a workout on your arms." But he never did. Stupid man. Marciano would have begged Ali to do the rope-a-dope. If you want to see how this works, just ask an adult male to punch you beneath the shoulder on the outside of the arm. See if you can stand it three times. Now ask yourself if it were sixty-seven times. Get the point? After Marciano fought Ezzard Charles, Charles' arms were so bruised that he could not even hold an ice pack up to his own face.

At the time, I dismissed Morrison as another great white hope, over-hyped. Now that I have actually watched his fights, he was much better than I thought. He had a ferocious attack that reminds me of Mike Tyson, believe it or not. But he was lacking in the other departments, which are critical to aspiring heavyweight champions. For example, particularly when he has the other guy in trouble, he leaves himself wide open, very similar, oddly, to another heavy-hitter I recently discovered, Jaime Garza. Morrison seems to wilt as the round numbers climb. He looks in good shape but I think he tends to punch himself out early. Like a lot of impressive flameouts, when he gets in trouble he doesn't really know how to handle it, and in some of his losses he got finished off quickly. Watch some of Tommy Hearns or Ray Leonard or Roberto Duran fights closely and you will see what I mean. But I love to watch his fights because win lose or draw, they're fast and exciting. You know somebody's going to get demolished and sometimes it's Tommy.
@wendaltvedt46732 жыл бұрын
Pretty good assessment of Morrison. He had his flaws in stamina, defense and perhaps a suspect chin but he went in there banging every time ready to knock out or get knocked out. The crowd always got their moneys worth.
@shiningphantasy1393 Жыл бұрын
Tommy Morrison put on some of the most watchable and re-watchable boxing matches ever; looking at his losses though he only lost three times; once against Mercer where he won the first three rounds but punched himself out; he likely would have knocked out most fighters with what he landed on Mercer; Ray just has a titanic chin like nobody else. The one against Lewis he was outclassed and also not is his best shape. That leaves the match against Bennt; obviously the worst moment of his career where he had a lot at stake in a tune-up fight and took it all for granted, coming into the fight after partying the night before and not is a suitable state to have a boxing match. He also struggled at times with what some would consider opponents that he should have defeated with less trouble, like Joe Hipp and Yuri Vaulin; Hipp was a fierce and resilient boxer though. At his best when he took his preparation seriously you got the result against George Foreman, where stamina was not nearly as much of an issue for him. Very few can match that left hook and pure punching power to the body; his combinations and right uppercut were nothing to sneeze at either.

@@henrybrowne7248 In no order I would say Mike Tyson, George Foreman, Tyson Fury, Corrie Sanders, Gerry Cooney, and also Deontay Wilder for his sheer punching power although I feel conflicted both ways about his persona. These are all heavyweights and I just like watching boxers with natural punching power and a signature knockout attribute but also some boxing skills to complement that. Also liked young Evander Holyfield and young Wladimir Klistchko.

You don't see too many knockouts from single body blows, but Tommy Morrison had the power in that left hook to do it! If he had been a little more disciplined, and really learned better defense, and used his jab more, he could have been one of the all time greats. As it was, he was one of the most entertaining fighters in history. He may have had the best left hook ever. And, 48-3-1, that's a damned good record. Yeah, 3/4 of those fights were against nobodies or mediocre fighters, but he rose to the occasion when he fought top notch fighters. He often fought to the level of his opponent, which is why he would struggle with lesser fighters - but he always managed to beat them.
