God this takes me back!
Every Friday night, sat there ready to press record and play on the tape deck.
Magical!
I was about 12/13 when I started listening-1980'ish
I remember a 'Christmas Special' he did when AC/DC released For Those About To Rock. I think they were in the Bahamas and Tommy went to a release party with all the band. A full 2 hours of interviews from a very merry band. It was the first time I'd heard Malcolm and Angus speak and remember thinking they only sound about 15 years old.
Great man Tommy though, a major part in my Heavy Rock indoctrination!
I had the whole show on a C120 BASF cassette, but I can find the bloody thing now...!!!
God bless you Tommy.
And... There's a great Facebook group set up with links to complete shows, well worth checking out

Hi Guys. This is Tony Wilson... producer of the aforesaid Friday Rock Show. :) Did you know that there are some FB groups dedicated to Tommy and the FRS? Also I'd like to let you know that we run a monthly gig at the Hope & Anchor in north London. I've called it The Friday Rock Show and it's dedicated to TV. We book 3 up and coming bands each month and stream it live on our YT channel. Spread the word!!

My god, I used to listen to this religiously every Friday night for at least 3-4 years, something like that during my teenage years. So many awesome bands I was introduced to during this time, particularly RUSH, who were relatively unknown at the time and kinda niche. Rush have called it a day now and retired and listening to this intro and knowing that, just makes me feel really old. Great times and a lot of fantastic memories from Tommy Vance. What an absolute legend.

The very first show I heard was when it opened with "Doctor Doctor" by MSG (the live version). As that track faded out, "No One Like You" by The Scorpions faded in. Absolute quality!!!! Nail on the head right there, other than Kerrang or Sounds there wasn't really any other way of getting any info, so TV was our weekly fix of ROCK! Somehow the internet has spoilt all that, it's removed the 'mystique' in some respects.

@@fastra3621 It has! Because we have everything available at the touch of a button then its almost throwaway these days. The Fri Rock Show was literally unmissable as you never wanted the miss this golden nuggets you simply could not get anywhere else other than the odd song on TOTP's or Whistle Test. To be a rock/metal fan you had to "work" at it! You right about Kerrang and Sounds too. I still refuse to read the pretensious twaddle spouted in the NME to this day for being anti-metal lol. Although its sad Kerrang has turned into a pop metal Smash Hits. Mind you... wouldn't get away with Reader Killerz and Pandora Peroxide in today's pitiful snowflake riddled world!

Great show..... I've got loads of recordings from the late 80's onwards. I always used a C90 cassette on a timer to record and then head off to the pub... Then make my own compilations from it. Discovered so many bands this way and then buy from 'Shades records' in London town. If they could get it, they would import it. The imports were a great price because invariably it hadn't charted or no UK interest / label / distributor, most recordings including postage were less than ten quid.

1981-83. We were 16-18 years old. Every Friday night, we'd all listen to TV on the Radio, separately. One of us would tape it on old-fashioned cassette tapes. The following Saturday, we'd gather together and play the tapes through, and critically analyse and discuss the whole lot. I doubt any of my then friends listen to rock/metal these days, but I still do. Rock on, Tommy! And his best jingle was Rose Tattoo - "TV, play that rock 'n roll, TV, listen to the radio, TV, play that rock 'n roll!"

This would have come from the later 1980's as it was put out on FM as well. I can remember Tommy celebrating the FM quality when he started to play CD rather than vinyl - his enthusiasm for this was almost as great as for the music itself! I used to listen on MW in Northern Ireland, and the quality was not great - fading and AM noise - ah, those were the days!

fastra Radio 1 was on VHF (FM for the younger pups out there) almost from its inception in 1967 when R2 was shovelled off to MW for a couple of hours every weekday night and on Saturday afternoons - look up the Saturday Rock Show with good old Fuff, from 1973-78 as an example of how to use VHF to the full. John Peel had use of the stereo network from 10 to midnight through the 70s & 80s, TV and his majestic Friday Rock Show had it on Friday nights, and it was that way from when the show started in errr.. 1978 all the way to when it ended and when R1 had its own FM platform 97-99. I have a distinct recollection of being 16 round my mate's house waiting for the R2 Sports Desk on R2 VHF to finish,to record the 1st Birthday prog on R1 VHF and giving up as the pips started, only to realise when he said - 'oh - is it where John peel is?'. R1 was on VHF for years before it had its own FM band. TV was special.

Radio 1 tended to borrow Radio 2's FM stereo frequencies 88-91 Mhz FM nightly from 10pm-12midnight for John Peel and Friday Rock Show and on Saturdays from 1pm-7.30pm and on Sundays from 5pm to 12midnight.

@@JulianHorsebox In fact Radio One was on 1214kHz from it's inception in '67 but in the early days some programmes were shared with Radio Two which was on VHF & LW. (Jimmy Young, Open House etc). However it wasn't until the late '80s that Radio One was duly available on FM, having continued to 'borrow' the Radio Two FM network at certain times, Saturday afternoon, Sunday tea time & late evenings for example. The stations former AM frequencies were re allocated to commercial radio eventually. (Virgin/Talksport etc)

Youre legend for posting this man, I used to watch the VH1 rock show every friday at midnight, when i was a teenager. Quality TV , taped it on the old VHS . That music about halfway through your video brought me back years. In the words of the great Vance himself "VH1 ROCK SHOW , SAW THEM LAST NIGHT AT THE ASTORIA , GREAT LADS , NOW FOR THE BEST ROCK ON THE BOX!"

Just what I wanted to hear... I had one tape of the show in June 1982 which I listened to so much I can remember the tracks in order! Have applied to join your group - I have a few shows or parts-of-shows on tape too.
