Metabolic Health Summit

Күн бұрын

On this week’s episode of The Metabolic Link, host Dominic D’Agostino, PhD is sitting down with neuroscientist, Tommy Wood, MD, PhD, to discuss optimizing human health and cognitive function.
In this interview, Dom explores a wide variety of fascinating topics with Dr. Wood. They uncover why cognitive demand may be important in preventing devastating neurological disorders like dementia, the importance of monitoring cardiovascular risk biomarkers including insulin, ApoB, homocysteine, and the potential benefit (or not) of using uric acid as a marker of health. They also explore the science of using the sauna, if Dr. Wood thinks seed oils and polyunsaturated fatty acids are problematic, and how omega-6 fatty acids might affect brain function and development. They even discuss a personal story on how Dr. Wood survived a viper bite in a jungle in Costa Rica… and much more!
Tommy Wood MD, PhD is a neuroscientist and professional nerd who has coached world class athletes in a dozen sports. He received an undergraduate degree in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, a medical degree from the University of Oxford, and a PhD in physiology and neuroscience from the University of Oslo. Tommy is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington, where his research focuses on brain injury and brain health across the lifespan, as well as developing easily-accessible and equitable methods with which to track health, performance, and longevity in both professional athletes and the general population. Tommy serves as associate editor of the Wiley journal Lifestyle Medicine, is a founding Director of the British Society for Lifestyle Medicine, and consults for a number of digital health companies and charities that focus on how lifestyle and the environment can affect long-term health and chronic disease.
In every episode of The Metabolic Link, we'll uncover the very latest research on metabolic health and therapy. It was terrific that you had Tommy Woods on your podcast. And it is great to see your enthusiasm. However, most of the time was you speaking, often asking about your issues, and Tommy was not given much time to talk. Please let your guests take centre stage. Ken

Dhru Purohit (Episode 386) had an interesting podcast with Dr. Richard Johnson in which they discussed links between fructose metabolism, insulin resistance, weight gain and Alzheimer’s disease- interesting hypothesis, I recommend it highly 1:52:59

I remember Tommy baffling Dr. Rhonda Patrick a few years back in a presentation that she did with Dominic when he challenged her on LPS. She referred to him as 'nice young man' then dodged the question. It's nuts that so much of the data is clouded by an unhealthy cohort and disingenuous studies.

Excellent information here! However I respectfully say that I would prefer less information about what Dr. Dagostino personally does and more focus on useful material for the general audience.

Interesting that the doctor he doesn’t really consider UA to be that important. I bought a UA meter too lol mine is like around 7 and i wanted to finetune my diet to get UA level down but it fluctuates so hard (4.5-8) that is basically useless to finetune

What about ‘size’ of APOB100? Don’t you want to see higher volume of ‘fluffy’ larger ApoB 100 than smaller ones? Lp(a)? Isn’t it the Lp(a) that can break through the cell walls and creat plaque in the arteries??

Dear Dom, Thank you for a nice conversation. I still think that the context is still not wide enough, especially when discussing uric acid. About your lp-a, if I remember correctly, your on T, right? I don't know if you're on an AI, but if you are, stop. If you're not, put yourself on oral estradiol, it will lower lp-a and LDL and raise HDL if you take enough of it. Micronized Progesterone will help lower uric acid as well.

He is obviously on paper intelligent but I doubt that it is much more than common intelligence honed by very hard work! However, I just cannot take someone seriously who feels the need to add "He/Him" to his title! This just means that he does not have a mind of his own... nor much independent thinking! !
