Happy new year, Tommy. It’s 2023, and I suggest it probably is a good time to upload your glorious version of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (a 1962 film). This would further complete the Dutt trilogy on your channel, giving desi film aficionados the real treat of India’s finest films.
@tommydan55 Жыл бұрын
You read my mind. It should be up in a month or so. I did upload it once, when I included both copyrighted and public domain films. It was immediately hit with a takedown notice (a copyright strike) by Ultra, so no one ever actually saw it. I hope this time it's different. Happy New Year, Mr. Yore.

tommydan55 Should you ever feels the urge to watch modern films, Anurag Kashyap would be a good choice as he is one of the few contemporary Hindi film makers who think that good and meaningful content matters...As one journalist put it: "India's Martin Scorsese".

Ms. Bielefeld! How nice to hear from you again. I'm happy that you can spread this around. Tell me, can you point me to an Indian classic film blog of yours? Is it in in English? Earlier it was mentioned that a Blu-Ray version of the film is now available. Have you seen it?
@manuelabielefeld68096 жыл бұрын
Tom, how nice to have a decent, legal, free and English subtitled Pyaasa online now that I can recommend to potential viewers who speak neither Hindustani nor French! If you look at the response you are getting here you can tell how much we needed this. My blogs are on Tumblr and yes, they are in English. But I'm no professional blogger and not much of a writer imo, so the stuff you can find there are mostly gifs and gifsets, screenshot edits, posters, film songs etc., but also some text posts. My main blog started as a personal blog but is now mostly Classic Indian Cinema:myluckyerror.tumblr.com/ (Many posts about Pyaasa and other Guru Dutt films there)I also run a sideblog with everything related to actress Waheeda Rehman:waheedarehman-infinitelylovable.tumblr.com/ I don't know if you are familiar with Tumblr, but there is a search and I use hashtags, so it shouldn't be too difficult to find your way around. Enjoy!The mentioned Blu-Ray version is the restored-by-ULTRA version. I haven't seen the Blu-Ray yet, but I have a DVD of that version, it was released a year ago in Europe by Swiss trigon-film. Images were greyish-purple, sound was lousy (not trigon's fault though!), and there are slight but significant differences in the copy/cut version of their print. I haven't seen the complete Pyaasa here yet, but sneaked into some scenes: simply great how carefully you worked on damages and scenes that came around too dark in that print! It looks really really good now. But not too "clean scrubbed", you know what I mean?I have one question though: no offence, but I think the upload is a tiny bit too slow? I tried both laptop and smart tv and when I try to adjust by speeding up a bit, it runs too fast.
@tommydan556 жыл бұрын
"I have one question though: no offence, but I think the upload is a tiny bit too slow?" No offense taken. I slow all my Indian films to film speed. You are in a PAL country and have been watching PAL 25fps films on television and DVD all your life and maybe 25fps (frames per second) seems 'normal' to you. As I'm sure you know, films - like films seen in a movie theater - run at 24fps. Virtually all Indian films on DVD, even those for the NTSC US market, keep the 25fps speed. So, yes, the ones I make for upload here are slower because 25fps speeds them up by over 4 percent. One very unfortunate consequence of this is that all the songs on PAL Indian classic film DVD and almost all film and song uploads from Indian films here on KZbin are out of tune - a semi-tone too high. I try and correct that. You can confirm what I say by asking any musicians you might know, or someone with perfect pitch. Or research the issue: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/576i#PAL_speed-up www.avsforum.com/forum/44-movies-concerts-music-discussion/450633-what-pal-speed-up.html One ad I read for the Blu-Ray said it's at 24fps.

@tommydan556 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your kind words. Police I'm looking for. There's only an atrocious Friends VCD available. I have Do Ustad but it was released in 1959 and is still protected by copyright. My current projects are made from VHS tapes so no subtitled uploads for awhile. There is one that will become available in a week or so with subs. The reason it's not available just yet is because of a 'mistaken' copyright claim and takedown notice issued on it after I uploaded it. The crooks will be gone soon.

I actually have a Kagaaz Ke Phool on which I worked. But it's 1.33:1 and not the Cinemascope version. Plus, it's protected by copyright for another two years so I won't be uploading it here. I know of no Cinemascope versions on which to work, anyway. One was pointed out to me before, but it was already heavily cropped.
@manuelabielefeld68096 жыл бұрын
Even a 1.33:1 upload will probably be the best available version. And I like the conventional lens version, I find the actors a bit more relaxed and at ease with each other.

Einstein’s Quote about Mahatma Gandhi fits perfectly well about stature of Sahir Ludhianvi’s Poetry & Philosophy in Literature & Bollywood history-- “Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth. (said Einstein of Mahatma Gandhi)” Sahir’s poetry & wisdom would shine on this earth long after we have perished. SAHIR= Wisdom of Aristotle+Brilliance of Einstein. Sahir Ludhianvi was FIRST A PHILOSOPHER who wrote poetry to convey his GOD GIVEN WISDOM & life experiences of his own to common man for his/her welfare in his poetry. Every word was carefully crafted & inserted in the right context to convey true message from that great thinker for A given situation (issue facing common man under similar circumstances).Not even one other published poet in any language has addressed so many diverse issues facing the mortals in his/her work as Sahir has done in impeccable manner & forceful combination of words. Long after we (mortals) have perished immortal poetry by SAHIR would shine on this earth with light radiated by NEXT SUN after demise of the present Sun.

I accidentally removed your comment about the existence of a Blu-Ray. Please forgive me. It was news to me and I went to look it up. For some reason Ultra decided to change the audio to surround sound. Have you seen the Blu-Ray? It seems to be a minute shorter than the version here. And, to tell the truth, I wasn't impressed with the (purple) restoration demo in the Ultra channel here on KZbin. But a commercial release would be very different from a KZbin version. Yes, the Guru Dutt films are notorious for having absolutely horrible versions on India media company DVDs. Needless to say, this didn't come from one of those. It's a shame, because I'm convinced that the atrocious quality of the DVDs helps prevent him from receiving his due as one of the world's great directors. Apparently, the restored version of this film has been shown at film festivals in different parts of the world to great acclaim.

Thank you for sharing this rare film in high quality but I found it an awkward mix of slight comedy, heavy-handed melodrama and cheesy musical, maybe not one for me but glad I've seen it, too many long songs got in the way when you really wanted some quality dialogue instead, plot a bit cliched and pious like a bad Hollywood film, I much prefer the more naturalistic style of Ray or The Cloud-Capped Star, this felt too staged and contrived
@tommydan55 Жыл бұрын
I'm inclined to agree, even though Pyaasa is almost universally acclaimed as one of the great films out of India. "A homage of sorts to Orson Welles and the story of Christ’s resurrection, Pyaasa has been named one of the Times Top 100 movies of all times, one of the Times top 10 romantic movies in 2010, and Sight and Sound chose the soundtrack as one of ‘The Best Music in Films’, in 2004." I do disagree with your comment on the music as it's almost universally admired. Maybe you're not used to Indian films being almost all musicals. Also, Dutt, because of being heavily influenced by western films, is thought of as being more approachable by westerners than other Indian films (but not Ray's work). In any event, my favorite film of his is Mr. & Mrs. '55. It's a comedy (mostly) and if you're curious, you can find it in this channel here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJ2oZapsha5pr68 Thank you for taking the time to leave your comment.

I chuckled. Yes, this film gets so much praise and is ranked by Time magazine as one of the 100 greatest films of all time. And I don't see it either. There are a couple of Guru Dutt's films I think are better and many other Indian films I enjoy more. So, don't feel like you've missed something that others see in this film. You're not alone.🙂
