Fabulous. As I learn to play this song on guitar in Chord Melody, it is very interesting to hear Tommy speak about playing Melody like a singer would. Not necessarily on the beat, but a touch behind or ahead, and remember to let the song 'breathe'. One of the most beautiful tunes ever written imho. And played here by the Master.

@crashraynor
@crashraynor 7 жыл бұрын
Super Okapi I've heard it called "pre-bend" - he's bending the strings before picking them, as the sound rings out he slowly releases the bend. it takes a lot of practice to pre bend to the right note (because you can't hear it as it bends up toward the right note). also, realize that Tommy doesn't worry much about strict tempo, he "cheats" like a singer, that pre bend is a stretch in the tempo - called "colla voce" he uses colla voce all the time, think somewhere over the rainbow, but I can't think of a pre bend off the top of my head.

This is one of those compositions that would sound like complete trash if I tried learning it. So much nuance. "Some Tommyiness may be required" and one does not simply "learn" Tommyiness...You either have it or you don't. I do not. I have the generic brand of Tommyiness. It's called "DannyFlech" and it isn't even sold in the same type of store little less comparable.

I know EXACTLY what you mean, i feel the same about my playing. But then again, everyone is unique. I prefer people who give something their own twist instead of doing it by the book or rules...
@MrC-yh8yx
@MrC-yh8yx 7 жыл бұрын
If Tommy played unplugged it would sound much thinner, trashier. He has managed to convert an acoustic guitar into the closest thing to a Strat as possible with the maximum pickup of nuance normally lost to an acoustic. But you must also have a great off stage sound technician.
@crashraynor
@crashraynor 7 жыл бұрын
steven cairney you are right that he's got fancy sound tech, and that a couple of techniques he uses (like the rainbow harmonics) wouldn't ring out as heavy. but Tommy could pick up the most junk trash guitar on the planet and still coerce incomparably beautiful music from it, plugged in or otherwise.
@crashraynor
@crashraynor 7 жыл бұрын
tenacious645 nah man, try it. it ain't gonna be Tommy, but trying it will give you a version of your own. some of the stuff he's doing pretty much is Tommy only (I'm never gonna get the damned harmonics), but studying him will make you better. try it!
@tenacious645
@tenacious645 7 жыл бұрын
crashraynor Oh yeah, I've had my own compositions or renditions of about 5 Tommy tunes. Some cone out well like, "I've always thought of you" or even "Angelina" but songs like this and guitar boogie 0.0 the nuance makes the song possible. Ultimately you're STILL right. There is nothing to lose trying anyways.

Tommy, I love you to death, and I can't wait for you to do a gig in my town. But after complimenting your virtuosity immediately below, it occurred to me that your repeated references to "Manuel at the Mexican restaurant" is, perhaps innocently, an unfortunate and ill-thought out use of language that seems a bit impertinent, almost Trump-like, reliant upon racial stereotypes. In the future, perhaps you might use this phrase instead: The guy or gal playing at the local restaurant; it is just as descriptive, but doesn't single out or minimize the worth of one particular race in what some may construe to be a disparaging comment. I understand that growing up in Australia during a period when the Aborigines were not treated well by the largely Caucasian population may have had its effect on you. None of us are perfect, right?
@markjones2865
@markjones2865 7 жыл бұрын
For the love of god Douglas, he's referring to the playing style of those types of players, mexican players. All down strokes and bouncy. It's a bland way to play and phrase things especially for this arrangement of a song. Does EVERYTHING have to be about race and Trump? Let it go man!!! Tommy is one of the most inclusive people and non-discriminatory people on earth. Get over your Trump derangement and pay attention and comprehend what he's saying before you comment. Better to be thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.
@stringbender57
@stringbender57 7 жыл бұрын
Douglas McIntyre - You are being absolutely ridiculous! Are you PC people delicate little leaves that crumple with the use of descriptive words. If this PC movement was allowed to continue then the entire world would be totally neutral, bland, boring and like staring into open space. Life would cancel itself out. By the way "Merry Christmas"! Or should I say "Feliz Navidad" or "Happy Holidays". You should realize Tommy is NOT degrading anyone. He has a good heart and is a perfect gentleman. And what you said about Tommy growing up in Australia and Caucasians is doing the same thing you are trying to correct Tommy about. I am Caucasian and I treat everyone with kindness, consideration and respect. I love people, animals, children, the elderly. I have good friends from many countries. If someone used the term to describe my playing as "John, the typical American Caucasian guitarist" I would not give it a second thought. So stop stereotyping Caucasians as bad. Get your facts straight about Trump and you'll see he is not racist. Stop listening to the rhetoric and lies from your college professors and the media (CNN, MSNBC, etc.) Do the research. Be your own person and make your own decisions. Peace brother! ✌🏻
