Lou Reed just wrote about the world he lived in. He didn't judge it for you; he just presented it for you to see. The Velvet Underground put music around it.

Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs (published 1870) is an odd book. To start with it's as cold as ice. There is no love here. There is only desire and domination, humiliation, frustration. Severin offers a contract to Wanda that he would be her sex-slave for a period of one year. The terms of the contract are carefully laid out, and it is signed. At the end of the year, the relationship would terminate. Perhaps the most interesting aspect is what I call the tableaux--the extension of time, the setting of the scene held in complete stillness. Severin would be bound and abandoned without knowing for how long, maybe hours, before Wanda would return to begin the flogging. It is a fascinating book. Since I hope you do read it, I'm not going to spoil the story by giving away plot points. I have no idea why the VU would be picked up Venus in Furs as inspiration. It might have been one of Andy's ideas, but I don't know. The VU song was my introduction to the book. I didn't actually read the book until I found that Gilles Deleuze had written a monograph called "Coldness and Cruelty," which was published along with the full text of Venus in Furs under the title Masochism: Coldness and Cruelty. The VU song and Deleuze's book were both released in 1967. Oh, and you asked whether they all sound like this. No. They don't. There are some very soft ballads like "Sunday Morning," "Candy Says," and "Pale Blue Eyes." There are some straight-ahead rock and roll songs like "Beginning to See the Light." And then there are some songs that are a little more of a challenge like "Black Angel's Death Song" and "European Son." You've heard a couple of the drone songs. There's a lot more to explore.

Hi! Great video as always. So: Venus in furs is the English translation of the book by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The book and the author gave the name and concept of sado-masochism to the world. Severin is the main character in the book, who desires that Wanda must treat him poorly for his own satisfaction. In the end he realises that as long as a woman does not have the same rights as man, she can only be his superior or his inferior, never his equal. While the book is really about equal rights for women, it mostly is considered a kinky book.

If you liked that you should have a listen to Waiting for The Man from the same album, or if you are feeling really, really adventurous try listening to Sister Ray from their second album. The Velvet Underground were a band like no other. They sounded different, they looked different, they had a (genius) female drummer and above all they had Lou Reed.
@ForARide6 ай бұрын
MrLouRules the sound and the arrangements on the first two seminal albums were mainly John Cale's achievement. He brought those sinister and menacing sounds such as the drone into the band and therefore into Rock music. Cale should have been co-credited for the music, but Reed's enormous ego stood in the way.

The song is based on the novella "Venus in Furs" by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. It was from his name that the term "masochism" was derived. As you surmised, the song is about sadomasochism. Severin is the main character and is infatuated with a woman named Wanda von Dunajew and desires to be her slave. There you have it.

I got to know this record when it came out and it made a life-longing impression on me... I'm 67 now, but I can feel the thrill of this music as if it was made yesterday. The VU was an exeptional amalgam of magicians, Lou Reed to me he's on par with Dylan. I miss such artists as him and Nico, it was a truly different era. Thanks for the upload mate, deeply appreciated!

Tommy A talented Musician (Cam Forrester) has done a sequence of forensic analyses of the music of the Velvet underground. The specific link for "how to play Venus in Furs" id below. A consistent feature of Lou Reed throughout his whole career is "simplicity" ... whereas most bands add more and more effects, drummers have more and more drums bells and cymbals ... in the Underground everything was basic. Mo would use one drum, a drum and a tambourine ... it was always about the rhythm, never the equipment. Having watched Cam's 1 hour documentary on Mo drumming, I note in every song just how central it is, with all the chaos going on around it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hmnXk2ubodt-j5o

Venus In Furs" is inspired by the novella of the same title, written and published by Austrian author Leopold von Sacher-Masoch in 1870. It tells the story of a man who wishes to be dominated and treated as a slave by the woman he loves. We get the word "masochism" from Sacher-Masoch's last name, and the entire practice of dominance and submission from this and the works of Marquis de Sade, a male author who wrote from the opposite position of dominating women and treating them as slaves.

"Do they all sound like this?" is quite funny. No, nothing sounds much like anything else. In fact, I once listened to two critics break down how, arguably, every track on this album spawned a different stream of music that would arise in the next 20 years. Not for nothing did they say that, while it only sold 5,000 copies, everyone who bought one started a band.

The band were friendly with robert maplethorpe a photographer, who took photos of the very graphic bdsm scene in new York. And was also one of Warhol's crowd.
