My favorite part of this video was the sound effects provided by the mustard. Good stuff.

you are on the right track its the the sulfur from fumes denaturated eegwhite that causing tarnishing. putting the silver in an plastic bag with Hot fresh boiled divided eegs and as litle air as possible Will give the best result.

Hi, would you happen to suggest a dry method? I'm interested in tarnishing silverpoint drawing. Thank you.

If any of you are thinking of “scrubbing” your silver or silver plate with aluminum foil, don’t. You will scratch the holy shiny finish to hell and back and in the case of silver plate…it will probably be irrevocably damaged. Your solid silver can always be buffed on a jewelers wheel but at the expense on silver content as that buffs actual silver off the piece because they need to buff through the scratches. Yikes.

As a child, I had a vintage book that had a line drawing of someone sniffing an egg and holding their nose...I sniffed an egg white and the sulphur smell made me gag. Even today I can't eat egg white, but love the yolk, and can eat it scrambled though...It is also the sulphurous whiff of egg samwidges on the stuffy coach on a school trip to Hampton Court that put me off too 🥚🍳 Povidone Iodine surgical scrub tarnishes silver...I washed my hands in it while wearing a silver ring, and it went dark grey. {polished off though} :)

Cool video! I thought you might be a science teacher and then you said “It’s repeatable””. Such a sciency thing to say! Also, I LOVE your lab table. I put soapstone counters in to my house to try and mimic that look. Thanks for the cool video!

Thanks, I was wondering. Just had eggs fried in mayo and my spoon has tarnished in the time it took to eat. Must be the egg. Thanks for the cleaning tip as well.

For best results with egg, overcook it, this will increase its sulphur content.

When cleaning off the silver tarnish with the aluminum did you notice a slight sulfurous odor?

Yes..I notice this quite often.

Is there other ways you recommend? I’m trying to test it out with my son but with silver coins. Permanent not that it can be scrubbed off or cleaned. Trying to age coins for fun little projects. He lives science and experiment.

Does this mean you lose a bit of silver every time you clean the tarnish? Eventually, does your plate thin or develop holes?
@TommyTechnetium4 жыл бұрын
Tarnish on silver (Ag) is oxidized to silver ion (Ag+). So yes, creating tarnish does end up removing metallic silver (Ag). However, I have not observed pits or holes to develop on the plate after several times conducting this experiment. I'd be interested to learn if anyone has seen holes develop, though!

I should add, that if you have powdered eggs, using them is much more effective and has an almost instant effect

A lot more work that just cleaning the silver the old fashioned way. Waste of food an a lot of cleaning up to do, boiling the eggs. More for teaching kids some chemistry, not so much for a busy husehold trying to save time and still have shiny silverware 😂

Your experiment proves that you should separate the yolk from the egg white. The egg white is the active ingredient. A chlorine liquide can also work.

How does salt not tarnish the silver, the chlorine in the salt can also cause tarnish like in a dishwasher
@TommyTechnetium3 жыл бұрын
Remember that the element chlorine can take on different forms: chloride ion (Cl-, found in salt), chlorine (Cl2), and hypochlorite ion (OCl-, found in bleach). Of these, only chlorine and hypochlorite ion are capable of oxidizing silver, causing it to tarnish.

Do you have any elemental sulfur at hand? I placed a silver coin (as I told you before) on contact with 10 -20 grams of elemental sulfur and it tarnished quite rapidly.
@TommyTechnetium3 жыл бұрын
Hi Brandon, thank you for your question and comment. I do have elemental sulfur on hand. I tend not to use it because the tarnishing it produces is so dramatic that it is difficult to clean off!
@brfisher11233 жыл бұрын
@@TommyTechnetium Yikes! That's something I don't want to happen! I won't be doing that again if there's a risk that something like that could happen! Guess I was lucky enough to not have kept the coin on contact with the sulfur for too long as I was able to clean off the tarnish!
@atsylor55492 жыл бұрын
I think the eggs tarnished faster by the egg white areas because that’s where there was plenty of oxygen. Where the center of the yolk was there was no air flow. You need sulfur and oxygen

@TommyTechnetium5 жыл бұрын
Try buying a magnesium fire starter. You can often find these in the camping section at Wal-Mart. I've never tried using magnesium fire starter to get tarnish off of silver. So if you do buy some and it works, please let me know.

Is it physical changr or chemical change
@TommyTechnetium5 жыл бұрын
Hi Super 10, the tarnishing of silver is a chemical change. The silver metal (which is shiny and silver-colored) is oxidized to form ionic silver compounds, which are dark in color.

Sure way to ruin silver....in half the time you spent with the salt and baking soda you could have polished it with silver polish....and had better result.
