Well, from a certain point of view, bodybuilding is much more about creating a certain type of body, than posing. So i think a list with great bodies should include him, because (as other bodybuilders have said), he could just stand there and beat them all without poses.

After Sergio retired his posing actually became much better, as he was doing a lot of guest posing. I saw him guest pose at a local contest around the mid 80s and he did an excellent job of showcasing his physique. Had he been able to pose like that during his competitive years he may have won one or two more Mr Olympia titles.

Back in the early 80s, when i started out in Bodybuilding I thought the whole point of bodybuilding was the aesthetic ideal. I never understood the mass monster ideal that came after Lee Haney and the massive dosage of steroids and other exotic shit that these guys took. I was disappointed and disillusioned, but glad to move on out of the bodybuilding world in the 90s as things changed.

the mass monsters who started popping up in the 1990's ruined bodybuilding
@PulsonarАй бұрын
@@dumbcat when Kevin Levrone stepped into the scene. It was a question of who had the optimum drugs regime that their muscles responded to. You see him as a natural he looks barely above a regular Joe. Then he does his juice regime and it’s like a magic switch. He was so good at that it was like seasonal work that he did 4 months at a time. Playing dice with his organs, health, and well being just to put his superman suit of muscles on for a few months. Then he goes and loses 40lbs of steroid muscle to do some other work as a musician etc… for the rest of the year. It’s bollocks isn’t it? Only genetic freaks like Lee Priest, Sergio Oliva, and a few others stood out truly blessed when they went natural. Dorian Yates scientific pharma methods also turned the whole thing on its head. Whilst I praised the heavy duty approach to training, the pharmaceutical side was something else altogether. Just ugly, and damn right dangerous no matter which way you look at it. You only have to look at the legions of pro and amateur bodybuilders who have since died before 50 yrs of age since the ultra conditioned mass monster era
@dumbcatАй бұрын
@@Pulsonar i think even some 1960's and 1970's era bodybuilders abused drugs. in Wendy Leigh's book "Arnold: An Unauthorized Biography" the book states, 'Arnold took steroids in quantities that terrified the other bodybuilders'. it seems like newer drugs came online in the 1990's along with possibly greater knowledge and maybe better doctor supervision. i gave up on bodybuilding about the time Rich Gaspari remarked after winning around 35K in prize money, "Well, that will just about pay for my drugs this year." i forget where i heard that, but i think is was actually printed in a bodybuilding magazine. i'm pretty sure i did not just hear it from someone at the gym.
