This was exactly what I was looking for to start building phrasing. So many teachers just wanting to show flashing lick without connecting to the vocals and the riffs and playing off of the up beats and crossing down in beats on longer phrases. Which is what vocals do in blues music. Short, long phrases short phrase etc. I’m a classical player for the past 30 years now. But want to get back my Chicago roots, 60s and 70s. Yeah I’m an old guy. But I want to learn it right. Are you in Japan? What prefecture?

Thank you so much for this wonderful series. I'm an early learner and was pulling my hair out trying to understand "E flat" in the comping section until you corrected at around 7:00.00 that chord was D. The universe is in alignment again. Your words of encouragement and 'Don't worry, etc are a tonic. Again, thank you.

So useful those hidden tricks. like the chromatic walk to the V chord. Your ear catches it, but it just get your foot going because of the smoothness. I watched video several times before my eyes caught it and I could start to learn it. And the changes from comping to riffs are as silk. And looking closely on the riffs, they are not all pentatonic. Yet it's blues.

Turned on this video, and for a second, I confusingly thought I had recorded myself, but I was practicing bass... 😂😂 After 39 years of trumpet playing these short little riffs offer so much to work on and can be rhythmically changed up to practice different grooves and finger techniques. The simplest phrases seem to offer the most in terms of practice time

Blues is an art and in the hands of a master can involve upper chord extensions, chromaticism alternate chord shapes, phasing, flat 7s flat 5s, approaching chords from a half step above and below it can be sad it can be up tempo swing oriented its a rabbit hole with going down
