You winner !!! I loved your "Piano folio for a deaseased Pleinad" so much. ( Yoshimatsu) 🌷🌷🌷 (The netherlands)

I thought his performance of both the Schubert AND the Liszt sonatas were exceptional. His interpretations are stunningly original and deeply moving in a way no other competitor could match. I fail to understand why he didn't make the finals (or why they awarded the 1st prize to surely the dullest performance imaginable!). The 2nd and 3rd prize winners were excellent for sure! The fact Tomoharu won the audience prize says everything! I hope this amazing pianist gets all the breaks he needs and has the kind of stellar career he deserves.

much agreed- piano juries are unscrutable but Leeds seems to be full of the mutual lovefest mentality and felt Uchida cut from finals grossly unfair considering some other presentations.

Sad situation in this carroussel of madness is it not?

@@ericsabourin7661 I suppose disagreement about decisions are inevitable ... but to exclude an audience prize winner from even the final round is almost un-precedented! This competitition has 'form' though with Eric Lu as aprize winner in 2018 ... a very capable, but essentially dull and utterly predictable performance. I've seen him live and it confirmed all my doubts! Certainly the Cliburn competition got it right with Yunchan Lim as their winner - truly phenomenal - and, in singing, the Cesti, with Laurence Kelsby, another outstanding performer to win!

@@melcadman every competition unveils what you saw aand heard. Ushida is atop the field with so many eliminated Asians for the benefit of emblematic circumstancial Caucasians. Judges are mediocres with agendas.

@@ericsabourin7661 seems they were more in love and mad about their piano tuner than Uchida. After a while the Lovefest of Leeds Mutual Admiration Society is quite tedious. I think TwoSet can be very accurate regarding the politics and bitchiness of competitions and auditions. Often a lot of bs involved.

Tomoharu Ushida played the last piano sonata D960, which Schubert wrote in the year of his death, as his solo. About his choice of this difficult repertoire, he said, "It was probably a foolish choice to play this in the competition. But for me, it was like a homework assignment from God that I could not avoid."
The jury did not choose him for the public,s prize.

Yes, we will never know if this was the First Prize Winner in waiting. As many have said, his Schubert D960 was arguably the best performance of the whole Semi Finals, and should have ensured him a place in the Finals. Nevertheless, he has so many followers on social media, does he actually need a competition win at all? (Great excerpts in this film, btw)

Congratulations on the Audience Prize 🏆 I wanted to hear Tomohiro Ushida's concerto. More than anyone else. (I think it was probably Schumann's A minor.) Apparently the winner played the same concerto in another competition and won. You should watch that video. I'm very disappointed that Ushida wasn't selected for the finals, and I feel unsatisfied. Are the audience inferior to the judges? I think all the judges should be changed from next time. I think it will lead to a problem with the credibility of the competition.

Congratulations Mr Ushida-- it was very hard to understand how you did not make finals. Unfortunately they did not ask the riffraff watching your performances because many, most thought you were exceptional.

I wasn't happy at that time but when you look at the mix of contestants in the final with three men, two women, one Brit, one from China and the other from Taiwan, it all looks 'correct'. If there were six finalists like in the past then he should have got in.
@@hyperactiveofficial8096 Two Japanese contestants took 2nd equal the last time, I prefer them over Bruce. Just to clarify when I said 'correct' it's what it appeared to the organisers., particularly regarding the ratio of the sexes.
