Wow, amazing! This was my project when I worked for Roland in the 80s! The Roland RSS system cost 25k pounds. Ridiculous. But it was a great pleasure working with Tim Simenon and many other great people to make this broadcast happen. Many thanks Auralcavity!

I had the TV on and stereo radio set up , I remember hearing sounds appearing from all around me . I was immediately hooked on this Technologie.. fantastic to hear what started it all .

...and the Megablast remix was done on one of the very first prototype systems with bare wires hanging out of the controller unit! Tim Simenon preferred the sound of that unit to the production one we used on Winter In July. Truly awesome to discover this up here, thanks again!!

Hi GEoTize, thanks so much for your comment - fascinating behind the scenes insight. Nice to know that someone on the original RSS dev. team for the broadcast has come across this. Thank YOU for contributing to the apparent magic which so engaged a then certain 16 yr old! It must have been equally rewarding to be among the developers, engineers and one Mr T Simenon. At the time it was a truly groundbreaking development in audio recording technology, its legacy today - plain to see. Thanks again!

This episode blew my mind when it aired. I recorded it on VHS and listened to it many times. It's amazing that there don't appear to be any other examples on youtube of the Roland RSS-8048.

Thanks for posting this. Just found the "Winter in July" 3D stereo track on an audio cassette that I recorded from Radio 1 that evening. This was a few months before I had managed to save enough paper round earnings to buy a NICAM VCR and Dolby Surround separates system. I had kept the tape recording and managed to get the Radio 1 news, the headlines of which were the scrapping of the poll tax.

I remember this clearly. Unfortunately I had a cheap stereo system and never really got the effect properly. This is the first time I've heard it properly. Really appreciate the upload!

Thank you very much for taking the time to piece this video together. It is great to see and hear it again. We didn't have NICAM either but I was able to set up a decent FM rig. It was an exciting event, right in the centre of my interests at the time. Watching this, it doesn't seem like too long ago, then I think about how far audio technology has progressed since then, and how much things have changed (not always for the better). It is amazing. Thanks again.

When this was broadcast I didn't have any NICAM equipment, but was able to move the TV around so it was between my hi-fi speakers and listen to the FM stereo broadcast. I recorded the FM broadcast on cassette and the (mono) TV footage on VHS, but it was a nightmare getting them to play back in sync afterwards! Sadly the VHS was recorded over and the audio cassette is long lost now :(

@HD41117 Hello, and thank you for your response. Reuniting these two pieces of archive has been a painstaking process but a labour of love - something which, I felt, simply had to be done. It's made all the more worthwhile by comments such as yours. Poignantly, I think it's wonderful that audio (& visual) technologies have progressed to the extent that like-minded people can now share, relive and reminisce about such memorable and, as you say, 'exciting' events as this... amazing indeed.

Thanks for putting this together. I was actually looking for the Tomorrow's World piece on Sony Minidisc, but can't find it. A chap from Sony demonstrated the buffering of the disc when he ejected the disc and put it back in with no interruption of the sound playback. Interesting clip you have uploaded. Well done.

Brilliant - I remember this edition well, unfortunately we didn't have NICAM, and my attempt to record Radio1 failed miserably, so this is the first time I've actually heard this properly. Even on just a laptop, it's amazing... Thanks for putting this up :)

Thanks for the upload, I had a few Video games with RSS used on them, Snatcher on the sega mega cd and gradius 2 on the PC engine super cd! I remember in the 80s that they would simultaneously broadcast totp on radio 1 and bbc1 tv, before nicam came out on a mass scale. Regarding q-sound, madonna had An few songs in q sound, and there was tons of capcom arcade games with q-sound, 1993 to 1998. Also good to see the Rogers grade 1 monitors used !

Thanks so much for this! I've been looking for this for years! I remember watching it and still have an audio tape of the R1 broadcast somewhere. What I'd love is to get my hands on one of those CDs. Do you know the name or anything else about it? I can't make it out on here due to pixelation. Cheers!

This is very nostalgic for me, I remember this from its original broadcast, its sad that the theme music featured was only used for another 3-4 months until the end of that series then it was replaced by a very percussion laden track by Chris Blackwell in the Autumn.

I remember listening to this live. 10 years after this, I worked on a developing, 3d sound, from a conventional, 2 channel system. It was a combination of speaker design and some electronics, but the results are out standing. My system uses 4 speakers, 2 left and right, 2 either side at a precise angle, and I could say its makes top brand stereo systems seem like your back watching black and white television again. However 5-1 should beat it, as long as they develop larger speakers.

Hi @jackthelad4711 Yes, I know what you mean about Q-Sound although the daily series "Knightfall", which was on Mark Goodier's daytime show, was actually made for Dolby Pro-logic surround sound systems to decode. The reason you might think it was Q-Sound/RSS is because some binaural artefacts usually result as part of the Dolby soundtrack's encoding - some of the effects seem to come from directions outside the normal stereo soundstage. I have archive from this and may post some later.. cheers

@brownae2 Hi, you're welcome. Great timing by the way - today (21/03/2011) is the 20th anniversary of the broadcast! I have the CD but due to possible copyright restrictions don't want to upload any of it to KZbin. It's called ESSENTIAL HI TECH SOUND EFFECTS (BBC CD 856). Try searching Amazon - Good luck!

2. - the RSS only in-outputs a single stereo signal. So it seems this original model, the one which looks like a Q-Sound controller as I recall, does a similar kind of thing to Q-Sound but just a lot better. It seems not to do the mind-melting velocity and doppler based tricks the RSS-10 does over its PC interface, judging by the rotary layout. Still, for 3D placement it sounded wonderful. How can it be that Roland don´t make these? They must be mad.Even just the reverb sounded stunning.

I´ve just been listening to some Q Sound demos - comprehensively 2nd rate by comparison but the Holophonic stuff with the matchbox moving up and down was impressive. Newer technology I guess. And a simple Soundfield mic system is better sounding than pretty much all of this other '3D' stuff. The Roland stuff is essentially very different to what Soundfield do, though. The other stuff I´m hearing largely sounds like it could be replaced by it - but not the RSS.
