Tom, this past year is not a regular year to judge your stats by….what with Jo, the new baby, all of the construction, replacing the bull, etc. Give yourself a break and wait until things calm down a bit for a true stat to judge by. You’re doing just fine by our standards❤❤❤❤

I like data and numbers so this video shows what your work/cost benefits are and whether you have been successful. Yes, I would say you did a fine job considering the stress on both the team and the heifers and what a whirlwind year you have been experiencing.

I am by no means a farmer or even a country type, having lived and grown up within Nottingham City, but I have spent a lot of time around farms when I was younger as those were most of our holidays, plus I am an engineer so numbers are always good, especially when they have meaning and help to explain what is going on. Thumbs up on this one from me.

This video had a lot of educational value for non-farmers. I would dare say quite a few did not know the cows eat the after birth. Provides nutrition to the cow, and is an evolutionary adaptation. Helps remove the scent of birth, helping to lessen chances of detection by predators.

Tom, you are a wonderful farmer, you have weathered, the Bale, the creation of a parlour, becoming a father, a wife who has been in and out of hospital and some truly awful weather conditions. You have faced all of that and not just survived but thrived. Give yourself a pat on the back. Give my best wishes to Jo, Harvey and the ginger guy. Love your videos they are a spark of joy and always make me wish I lived close enough to your farm to visit, however I am tucked away down in Kent. All the best and long may you continue to grow and prosper.

You're doing a good job Tom! Don't let missing 60% get to you, especially considering this was the first time trying a new method and it's with a small group. As you dial in your procedures and have a larger number of cows for data, the numbers should improve. Placentophagy (postpartum consumption of afterbirth) occurs in many species of mammals for several reasons beyond nutrition, one being instinctual to keep from attracting predators to the birth site or nest. More recently it's been discovered that placenta (and amniotic fluid) contains elements that are natural opiod enhancers, and increase pain threshold. Love and hugs to Jo. Hope she's better soon.

Your milk production will increase by free ranging on fresh growth. The top part of growing grass has the most nutrients for milk production. If you move the herd from pasture to pasture .. letting them feed on fresh growth every day.. your milk production will nearly double from feeding dead straw..

Hi Tom, your stats made perfect sense, Nigel gave you males and with the semen you got heifers. I hope the new bull gives you a better spread with more heifers. Being overrun with bull calves is making the job harder with more mouths to feed. You are a great farmer and Ginger has taught you well on how to run a successful dairy farm business. Now that most of the building work is finished, you can sit back and enjoy life with your own family. Chris from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.

Hi Mum, from a fellow loser! Super interesting Tom, shows how much thought and forward planning you have to put into both the beef and dairy sides of stock management and how you cost it out. If you're only out by 10% after the year you've had, I think you should by damn proud of yourself. Next year I have no doubt you'll hit or exceed your target. Give yourself a little grace.
