Not everyone who opposed slavery in the antebellum United States was an abolitionist. Many Americans during the antebellum period only opposed the SPREAD of slavery. These "free soilers" did not have a problem with slavery in the South, but they didn't want to live around it. Simply put, free soilers wanted a "White West." This mentality was reflected in the Wilmot Proviso, which attempted to ban slavery in the territories in the Mexican Cession by congressional legislation. These free soilers didn't want to look at slavery - much like I don't want to look at dog mess when my inconsiderate neighbors don't pick up after their pets.
This video is in the "lazy lecture" format - very informal!

Wasn't the idea behind Free Soilers to contain slavery? If it was contained and kept from spreading it would ultimately disappear. I don't think they were necessarily racist as you seem to be inferring. Free Soilers understood State sovereignty and knew they could not force the South to abolish slavery. Is that not why the South seceded in the first place, because of the conflict of State vs. Federal rights? John Lock was right, it all comes down to life, liberty and property. The South only had one problem, they ignored the part in the Declaration of Independence that stated, all men are created equal. They sought to protect their property. What they never understood is that another man is not property.

"Wasn't the idea behind Free Soilers to contain slavery? If it was contained and kept from spreading it would ultimately disappear." Are you saying that the free soiler's wanted to contain and eventually end slavery? How are they also not racist? I don't think they did their actions on behalf of black slaves as they mostly did it for themselves. the free soil party had a strong basic following of making western America for white people. They didn't do it for the slaves because they sought the security of a free white mans job than ultimately ending the institution of slavery. People also call them racist because them "containing" slavery can be looked as systematic oppression by keeping blacks out of the western frontier because blacks weren't apart of their motto (the part "free man"). However, not all of them were racist, which is true as abolitionist such as Fredrick Douglass were in involved. But, they mostly joined the party because it had a large national following than the abolition movement during the time. Many abolitionist ideas for black rights were suggested to the free soil party but they didn't agree with them either which can paint a picture that these guys weren't protesting for black slaves at all. Therefore, the intentions of the Free Soil Party was not ultimately for the end of slavery but for keeping the west mainly for white folk (which seems pretty racist to me). Also the south seceded due to various reason, but what laid beyond all of them such as state v. federal rights was the institution of slavery. The south seceded because of slavery that is a cold hard facts. Most of the letters by the seceded southern stated they're leaving because of "states right" but were mainly followed after with the problems of slavery. In the end this comment was from 6 years ago, but keep in mind that your comments will summon people like :p

"Free Soil" meant Free Soil for Whites Only. They didn't want black slaves or free blacks competing with white laborers, "Free Labor" was another euphemism for free labor for whites only.

@@tongdawu2041 why did the south secede when everything was going their way. They repealed the missouri compromise which prevented new northern states to be slave states. Lincoln said he didn't want to stop slavery. I'm befuddled as to why the south secede then attached the fort.
@tongdawu2041

@@bguy1979 various reasons. But the main theme that all the southern states made in their declaration of causes of seceding states was the threat of the destruction of the institution of slavery. On battlefield.org/learn/primary-sources/declaration-causes-seceding-states, Mississippi’s declaration it says in the 2nd paragraph, “Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery- the greatest material interest of the world.”

@@tongdawu2041 thanks. What's the evidence of the threat of the north wanting the end slavery? Abolitionists were a minority.

A better metaphor using your own analogy would be this; Imagine your dog is a crop. When your dog produces harvest (dog shit), you as a white male have the dignity of picking up your own dog's shit without without social barriers thanks to the Free Soil Party. Or you can go to Home Depot and hire an illegal immigrant to walk your dog and pick up your dog's shit for you. The terms would have to be agreed upon by you and said Mexican because the Free Soil Party obstructed the pathway for you be able to outright purchase and own your own Mexican. Remember, it is only unconstitutional for you to force somebody into slavery. People can still volunteer themselves for slavery.

Would this party today take a tough stance on illegal immigration because it undermines the dignity of American labor?
