Yes, I bought all the stuff you recommended in your EC685 Ultimate video. I have a Kingrinder K4 and I am using it on the Outin Nano but its a challenge getting the right setting for it. As someone who is new to electric grinders, this looks like what I need. The Breville is a great price but probably a bit more complex than what I need. I don’t care so much about the grind time as much as I care about the single dose setup. There’s one setting so I can concentrate on the most appropriate grind for the machine. I think I will pair it with the Breville dual boiler unit.

I love my DF64 gen 2. Had it for a few months now. I wanted low retention. Single dose. And something that would do espresso and filter. And not to much static. Thus the DF64 G2 was my choice. This however would looks like a smaller version of that. Given the price i wil recommend this to friends over the heavier price of the bigger version.

Got mine and happy with it. Only con so far: The dial scale is a bit hard to turn, since the polished aluminum is kind of slippery. Fixed it with 12mm anti-slip tape, as it is used on the floor for stairways etc.. Works great then.

Hi Tom! I have the DF54 and am loving it. An fyi, make sure the bellows are on the right way - I found if they are upside down they knock off easily (and it’s not easy to tell which way is up), but turn them upside down and mine fit both the machine and the lid nice and snug.

I said it on another video, but this is the grinder that I didn't know I was waiting for. There is nothing "wrong" with my ESP but I think I'd like the adjustability and workflow on this better. What is the advantage of getting the DF54 over D40+? I'm on the fence trying to compare your comment on tasting notes. The tasting notes for D40+ sounded more interesting while for DF54 it was just 'balanced'.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 10 ай бұрын
I like the stability of the build and the grind adjustment better on the DF54, and the deionizer. For a taste test, I'd have to try comparing them side by side. You know, beans make quite the difference, and the amount of time the machine has been warmed up. That can also influence perception in taste. Cheers!

@mtnlover 10 ай бұрын
I am excited at this option! Thank you for sharing. We have the SK40: I was excited to get a stepless grinder that was affordable. Control was really good for grind size. The only disappointment is that I thought the flavor is a bit muddled. We use mostly light to medium roast single origin and want the unique flavors to come through. I know flat burrs are more recommended for this, but we couldn't afford 500 for one. In your opinion, does this 54 mil flat burr improve flavor enough to notice from the SK40? Can you do a comparison of the two, seeing as they are priced in the same ballpark? Thank you!

Really wish that was available a couple of years ago. I started out with a Mignon Facile for about $150 more, then spent another $100 on a bellows hopper and an updated dial system. Works out ok but really have to work the bellows to get all the retention out and still holds on to about .2g you can see switch from light to dark roast. I've added the new DF64 gen II and it's great so would expect this to perform similarly.

In the low cost category you didn't mention the Baratza Encore ESP. So I think everybody assumes the DF 54 would do a better job making espresso grinds because that's all it can do. Please do a head to head comparison if you can. With all of these grinder reviews and there have been tons in the last two or three months I don't see the encore ESP much but when I do the reviewers seem to think it's the all to end all so anyway I'd like to see how the ESP stacks up

The build looks similar to the other DF series. Since you mentioned a DF83, I own a DF83v2. I have consistentcy issues with it. Meaning, light-medium roast, I find I have to adjust the grind size on back to back shots by a significant amount. After about 6 grind sessions I can go from 8 down to 4. I’m wondering if the DF54 behaves similarly? I never figured out the problem with the DF83 but am guessing it might be heat related. This looks like a neat grinder and I might be tempted if I did not own the Baratza Vario W+, which I find great for batch brewing.

Often wandered what the impact is of the screws within the burrs. The burr cutting edges and geometry are so carefully engineered but yet they then have great holes, edges and screw heads where the screws are. Is this just a shortcut/cost saving compared to putting the screws somewhere else? Or does it really not matter to the resulting grinds?
@TomsCoffeeCorner

They need the holes to mount the burrs to their carriers. There are however some grinders with ghost burrs, which are mounted differently. But that's also more expensive...

How does it compare to e.g. a Eureka Manuale which is around the same price point? I get they are designed differently with the DF being single dose, but how does the result in the cup compare?
@TomsCoffeeCorner

I am guessing very, very similar. The burr design looks nearly identical to be honest. I mean, I’ve never tried the Manuale, but this would be my best guess.

Servus Tom, Thank you for the awesome review! I’ve also read your blogpost about this machine and in the end you state that “for that [price in Germany] you could get a Eureka Mignon Manuale, Classico, or nearly a Specialita”, which makes it sound like those could be the better deal. The DF54 currently is 330€, the Eureka Mignon Zero costs about the same here. Which one would you recommend getting? For my use case I highly value low retention and build quality. Or would it make more sense to spend a bit more and go for the DF64 Gen2 (490€), EMIL T64 (450€), or Eureka Single Dose (560€)? Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!

Hi Tom it seems that im still on the fence weather to get df54 or varia VS3, all i can say is in my country the DF54 is cheaper compared to varia vs3, im a little bit worried about the retention on df54 based on the post i read in reddit. Varia got almost zero retention but its a conical burr grinder. I only drink latte twice a day using picopresso setup. tired of hand grinding thats why im looking for an electric grinder.
@TomsCoffeeCorner
@TomsCoffeeCorner 7 ай бұрын
For me, the DF54 also has little to no retention - maybe 0.1 grams after the initial use. I haven't tried the VS3, so I cannot comment to that.

Awesome videos Tom! I am torn between this one and the Specialita. What would you suggest? I could actually get the Specialita for around 100euros more. I could still SD the specialita. But the build/quality etc seems to be better on the Specialita. Just the small dial could be a challenge. What do you recommend between the 2 for a first timer and just drinking espresso? Thanks.

The DF54 is a nicer grinder all around, I'd say. But it's different in a lot of ways - single doser, it's slow, but more premium build, chinese designed, and flat burrs vs conical. The ESP is more convenient to use if you're not switching beans and don't want to single dose.

Makes sense. I do prefer a medium to darker roast for pour over and a lighter roast for espresso. Sounds like maybe you’d lean more towards the DF54 for those roasting profiles?

@@adrianravinsky8418 Hello, and thanks for the note. I couldn’t be happier with this grinder, but have no basis for comparison. I will say that the combination of the two produce the best espresso i have ever had though. And, fresh roasted beans are a must, and make a huge difference in quality. I order from COFFEEBEANSDIRECT, excellent, fresh beans, great customer service, and a very reasonable price. I get the Medium Roast Espresso whole beans. The darker roast espresso was too oily for the machine and gummed it up. Also, COFFEESENSOR, the company has been a great resource for parts, and the owner, Tudor, has taught me everything I know about the LA PAVONI. I highly recommend, and hope this helps. Thanks, DW
