Thanks for showing the full process here and including the parts where things go poorly and frustration ensues. Too many how-to vids skip those bits, and to me, they make the final reassembly that much more satisfying. Plus it’s helpful to know which shortcuts do and don’t work. Looking forward to sweating and swearing through this upgrade myself!

I did the same mod for my 685 back before I gave it away - getting the plastic ball 'nut' across the bend is insanely difficult just using your hands alone. What I highly suggest to make it easier is to oil the wand at the bend, and use pliers on the plastic ball to twist it whilst pushing/ pulling it across the bend. If you're concerned with scratching the ball 'nut', don't worry, it doesn't affect the performance if you do (I scratched mine up but it didn't matter). However, if you really want to avoid scratching it, just put a few layers of masking tape or painters tape onto the pliers jaws and use it that way.

Thank you for this amazing video Tom! It was helpful to watch through before performing the wand replacement. As other have mentioned, my ECP3420 (US model, bought in 2015) had metal crimps holding the hose between the wand and the boiler. I was able to carefully disassemble the crimp by prying the metal parts. I re-used the existing crimps by bending the metal to expand them with needle nose pliers and then re-crimping with large flush cutters. Others may want to look at small screw-on type hose clamps or buying a single ear metal crimp kit. The size is 9.5mm diameter for both clamps. One tip for getting the plastic ball onto the new wand is to lightly heat the plastic using hot air or stovetop. This made it much easier to twist and slide the ball past the curves of the new wand. Overall it's working great now and I have LOTS of steam with the new wand. Can't wait to start practicing my milk steaming the proper way :)

Bought an ECP3420 a month ago from Amazon and finally got the chance to replace the wand. The white plastic nut was a pain, eventually used the hair dryer for half a minute to heat up the white nut and applied oil to the wand, then I used a 5/8 wrench to push the nut and it slid off in half a second. 5/8 wrench fits almost perfectly on the nut so applying inward pressure is easy. My fingers are very small so even though I tried rubber gloves pushing with the hands did not help. While the problem with the white nut is now easy to overcome with plenty of the suggestions the next pain is the rubber hose. My rubber hose had a red covering and a pex hose clamp. Pex hose clamps cannot be reused and where I am it is hard to buy so I used cable ties for now. Also, another problem I face was setting down the white washer I didn’t really pay attention to it and then I realized that boiler is not sitting properly for me to screw it. If anyone is planning to use cable ties first make sure that boiler sits appropriately because eventually you will need to remove the cable ties on the hose to fix the issue. Other than that, now the machine works well. Happy Modding! Edit 1: So cable tie didn’t hold the steam hose securely on the steam wand, I ordered the hose clamp from Amazon and secured it with a screw based hose clamp. It still seems to me that the hose might come off as I got a 1/4 inch hose clamp which is a little bit bigger in size, so it doesn’t go below that ridge on the steam wand. I could only secure the hose right over the top of the ridge.

So it took me two days of working on it here and there, stepping away each time I became frustrated lol. And everything that could’ve went wrong did, but I finally did it. It is definitely better than the stock steam wand, although still waiting for my milk steaming skills to improve. I also want to mention that for The first time in my six month journey of home espresso brewing, I was able to get a bag of fresh roasted espresso from a local roaster. Part of the problem I have had is that I do not have a grinder good enough for espresso. However, this local roasters website gave you the option to have them grind the beans for you. On the drop-down menu, I selected home espresso and figured I would have to make some adjustments regardless. Wouldn’t you know it came perfectly ground at the right size and I was able to brew the perfect shot of espresso for the very first time. I mean Crema,, tiger stripes, 36 g in about 30 seconds - the whole 9 yards! And it made the best latte I’ve ever tasted. For anyone wondering, it’s the miscela bar brew from La Prima in Pittsburgh. I always hear people emphasizing the importance of fresh roasted beans, but I sort of assumed that I had to be doing something else wrong and that was the problem. But it’s actually pretty unbelievable that it makes such a difference! Learning more every day. Now I just need to find a decent grinder on sale. Do you happen to know offhand the cheapest grinder available that would still give me the grind size I need for espresso? It seems to me that it’s going to be around the $200 range. Does that sound right? And thank you again, Tom for the great video!

Julia- How did you work around the clamp holding the steam tubing? It is not a SPRING CLIP that you can use with a pliers!
@julih8425
@julih8425 11 ай бұрын
Improvised lol. That was definitely the worst part. And the most time consuming. I did see where someone mentioned these clamps in the comments, but hoping everything would be like Tom‘s video I wasn’t really prepared for them. But after some trial and error I was able to use needle nose pliers, and a flat head screwdriver to loosen it enough to remove. The only problem is I could not get it to tighten back up when trying to put it back on. I Later learned there is a specific tool for fastening them that I certainly did not have or even know about at that point. So I rummaged around in my garage until I found one of those old fashion hose clamps that you turn the screw to tighten it. However, even the smallest one I had was sort of big and clunky, and after about a week I could feel the steam wand lose a little bit of pressure. So I had to take everything back apart and saw that there was a tiny bit of moisture escaping the end of the hose where I used that clamp. So just for a temporary one time use kind of fix I removed that clamp and fastened the hose with two zip ties until I could get to the store and get an actual new spring clamp and a tool to fasten it with. I ended up purchasing a different clamp then what was on there originally but apparently it’s still considered the same type. Not sure how well I fastened it as I obviously am learning as I go, but since then, so far so good!

Thanks for this guide! To get the white knurl piece over the curves, water didn't help me, but I cut a 1" section from a piece of clear tubing (the tubing itself was approx. 1" diam) and cut that ring of tubing, so that it could curl onto itself as needed (closing like a hand). With that wrapped around the white knurl, and using a channel-lock plyers, the piece moved pretty easily to its final position. My used ECP3420 did NOT have removeable clips on the hose for the old steam wand... they were "pinch" clamps, which had to be cut off. I found an adjustable clip at home depot that fit (1/4" to 5/8". A bit less forgiving for taking up a bit of space, but it all worked in the end.

Just did this with the ECP 3120. Here are tips for those trying with a newer machine: 1) The Oetiker clamps are a bitch to remove. Seriously they’re terrible. I used a flat head to force them open, but you may be able to cut them off if you have the right tool. Once they’re off, though, they’re done, so you need to buy a replacement (I’d recommend buying two-one for each end of the hose). I bought two of the smallest I could find at Lowe’s. They’re the kind that have the notch at the end for a flat head to tighten or loosen the clamp. Mine just barely fit in with the frame, so be careful about the size you buy. 2) Getting the plastic nut on was way easier than the clamps. People have already said this, but I’d recommend boiling the nut, sticking the wand in the freezer, and then putting olive oil on the wand then immediately taking the nut out of boiling water and forcing it on. It went on super easily for me.

I just did this mod to my EC260BK after seeing many recommendations for it on similar machines. It is indeed just as painful of a process to get the white plastic nut up into the correct spot. In fact, I tried sanding down the inside of the nut to open up more space but I would highly recommend not doing this because it’s important for the wand to sit snug in the nut so it can spin and rotate properly. I think olive oil and nitrile-coated work gloves are mandatory… Also you may find that the hose in the EC260 has a red braided sleeve to help protect it from damage which is nice! However mine had PEX clamps instead of spring clamps securing the hose. After removing those I wasn’t able to reuse them… I ended up buying worm gear clamps but would much prefer those spring clamps if you can find any that fit properly. But it’s truly a night and day difference from the stock steam wand… good luck!

Honestly, I wouldn't install one. It's one of the things that draws me back to the Delonghi's, even after using much more expensive machines. Since Delonghi has no 3 way valve, the pressure stays on the puck, and you have to wait about 60 seconds to remove it, BUT, the pucks knock out cleaner than ANY other machine I have ever used. That is such an ergonomic advantage for me, that I keep coming back to the Dedica, ECP, and so on.

Hey Tom - thank you for the awesome content as always. I currently have an ECP 3630 with stock wand (in "advance mode"). After pulling a shot, I switch to steam mode and just before ready light comes on, I purge valve for a few seconds prior to steaming milk. I noticed that even after I purge for a few seconds, a little bit of water continues to come out for up to 25 seconds with steam. Is this normal? I have measured that comes out with steam AFTER purging for a few seconds and steaming for 35 seconds, and it's about 25 ML that get's added to milk. Water coming out with steam is also a little intermittent, almost like stuttering. My milk comes out watery at times and I feel this may be contributing to it. Any help is appreciated!

Hi there! Well, if you wait for the steam to become completely dry, it's gonna take a while, with ANY boiler machine in my experience. I'd just go for a happy medium, and purge out the majority without having to spend too much time doing so. Cheers!
@Labcarrot
@Labcarrot 10 ай бұрын
Howdy pall! I have been using my ECP3630 for a month now. What I have found is that the first run of steam after going from shot mode to steam mode is weak and wet. What I have been doing is the following “hacking” process. Start by pulling your shot, then switching to steam mode. Wait until the temperature light turns green telling you the boiler is up to temp. Now, open the steam valve while holding a rag beneath the steam wand. Let it purge until it completely is out of pressure and the green temperature light turns off. This should take about 30-60 seconds. Now, turn off the steam wand and let the boiler come back on. Wait an additional 30 seconds until the green temperature light turns on a second time and then, get to actually steaming. What you will find with this method is that the steam pressure will be SUBSTANTIALLY higher and will run at this high pressure almost indefinitely. The steam the second time the boiler fills is also very dry, and will not spit out water. Why this works is beyond me. Possibly the heating element is not strong enough in these little machines to turn all the water already inside the boiler at “shot temp” and heat it up to “steam temp”. Perhaps when you purge all of this water out of the system the boiler is able to actually get screaming hot and subsequently turns every bit of water introduced to it by the pump into high quality dry steam. Whatever the case may be, it works if your patient. Some day I hope we will both be able to upgrade to a Rancillio Silva. Until that day, hack until you break the thing!

Hi Patrick, well that probably depends on your palate. I think you get get really good shots out of the ECP, if it is heated up for a while, and if you have good puck prep and good beans - but that goes for all espresso machines. Does the espresso get markedly better in my opinion on a $500 or $1000 machine? Not really for my palate, no. But the $20k machines that are heated up all day and have temp and pressure profiling do make a more syrupy and sweeter espresso. In the end, I think the bean is the most important, then the pressure (shouldn't be too high), then appropriate heat. These little machines do damn good for their size and price.
