Hi. great review! I used wood gas stove quite a long while. FYI, wood gasifier stove also known as TLUD stove, ( means top lit up draft ) should filled with thicker wood at its bottom , and smaller one on top. the fuel level can't be higher than the gas hole and lit it from top. You will get longer, cleaner smokeless, and more efficient burn. more than 90% of reviewer in youtube use it the wrong way. hope this help.

I just ordered this on Amazon earlier today. I was a bit suspect in how this would perform in comparison with the solo stove so I checked out your video. Im happy to say that it seems to work just as well and for a third of the price and also packs down smaller. Cant wait until it comes in! Thanks for the review, you have earned a new sub :)

Two things. Do not use the little alcohol cup as an ash pan, because it will significantly decrease air-flow to the base. If an ash pan is needed, cut a disc from aluminum flashing that is slightly larger than the stove base, and elevate the edge all around to hold it in place during use. Good air-flow to the base is especially important in top-down burns. That fact brings me to my second point, a wood-gas stove like this performs far better with a top-down burn. Properly loaded, no additional fuel or even attention is needed for the entire burn. Another advantage of the top-down burn is that it consumes the fuel at a much more efficient rate, so it lasts longer. For all these reasons, it would be nice if all demo-videos of wood-gas stoves showed the stove being used in top-down burn form.

Yeah, you need to fill the stove with sticks or pellets first, and start the fire after, from the top... The flame and smoke, will go down and will be returned to the top, to be reused.... This is the advice i want to give you too, but i seen Robert's post and i just replied here.

Hi Will, many thanks for watching my friend :) Yeah for the money they are a great stove. Very well made, light weight and they store away quite neatly. Since buying it, I haven't had to make as many fires over the summer for drinks or food. So it has been quicker and safer, especially during all that hot weather we had. I'm sure it will also get used quite a lot now things are cooling down. So for the cost it has been worth it and certainly worth a look if you are interested in these kind of stoves. If you look on amazon or eBay, there are hundreds of different versions, but from experience this one isn't too bad :) Thanks again Will, have a great day, all the best, Mark :)

GREAT !! a few points here:- Excellent video showing everything clearly & simple. ( & no silly music ) clear explanation. Amazing design , the way it all packs away. & the way it adapts to many methods of use. Very good as emergency back up at home for hot water , soup, & coffee etc. you could even boil water for a ' Hotwater Bottle ' for extra warmth camping or in a Power Failure situation at home. A VERY USEFUL thing to have even if you never go camping ! its cheap & compact & endless supply of fuel FREE of CHARGE & READILY AVAILABLE to ALL . Warm food & drinks Anywhere if you have a bag of twigs & small sticks. BRILLIANT ! MINI Barbecue for people with limited outdoor space ? Teach the kids Outdoor cooking skills with fire etc.

Actually the little grill that comes with the stove works very well and it’s very durable. Here’s the trick. First you have to wait until the flames die down, then you have to remove the pot stand and place the grill directly on the stove top, where it will rest quite securely.The other little gift that came with my Tomshoo, is the 21” bellows which has saved the burn on many as occasion without being engulfed by the smoke. It’s just the best gassifier stove. And also, with the complimentary accessories, a complete package.

Hi Robert, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) I will have to try the little grill that came with it. I think I still have it somewhere :) You got a good deal getting the bellows as well. I might have to get on the phone LOL. I agree Robert, they are a great stove, mine is usually with me somewhere :) I use the spirit stoves quite a lot, more out of convenience, but I do prefer cooking on the Tomshoo. Thanks again and have a great weekend, all the best, Mark :)

Great review. I have one of these, I have been using it for some time, and it has performed well, it's really sooty now, but it hasn't warped with the heat, and I have kept it burning for lengthy periods of time. I rarely use the trivets as my mess tins and frying pan rest securely on the wind shield without disturbing the airflow. I have even taken off the wind shield to roast meat on a hook from a tripod. Its a really versatile stove. It's easy to feed as well because of the gap in the windshield.

Hi, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) As a stove they throw a lot of heat out. I have used it as a small fire after using it for cooking food, but it is more like a handwarmer. Most of the heat is directed up and not much radiates outwards, so if you are looking for something small that you could get a bit of warmth from then it should help. But I wouldn't want to use it as my sole heating source if I was camping in the wintertime. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)

Thanks for a nice video Mr Bailey, but this is not the way, a wood gas stove is supposed to be fired. This way, it will of course burn, but like a hobo stove, and not utilize the favour of the gasifying design. It is supposed to be filled with wood fuel from the bottom, up to the seccondary air inlets, and litten from top of that. It will however take a while to start, but then the hot airflow at the outlets serves with hot oxygen, and creates blue flames with minimum soots, and smoke. It will burn steadily this way until just the charcoal remains glowing. If the cooking is not completed it may however be fed carefully from above until the cooking is completed. Too much feed, and it will burn too heavily, and start to soot, and smoke. That is the intended use. I have tried similar devices, as well as home made stoves out of food cans, and they work very good. I would say that the "can versions" burns a bit better, but these stainless designs are more portable and supple, though they fit in eachother. Try firing it that way and compare. :) Love from a swedish old man.

Hi JOON B.E, many thanks for watching the video and taking the time to comment :) The best way to burn the wood in the stove is to stack it vertical and light a fire on top. Most people use them this way as it burns for longer and it uses less wood. But for a quick cup of tea, I just make a small fire in the bottom of the stove and put the wood on top like a conventual fire. I hope this helps, all the best Mark :)

Nice review! I just bought this same stove and have been having trouble getting wooden things to burn in it other than paper or cotton balls. I bought 2 40-lb bags of hardwood pellets but could not get them to light using either matches or lighter. Same issue with the 3 bags of wood smoking chips (apple and cherry scented). I have never camped or bar-b-qued before but trying to test cooking with no chemicals in the event the grid goes down and wood is the only source. I suspect the problem might be the type of wood..you used Birch and it probably is very dry. The hardwood pellets were bought from Lowes and seem dry and brittle crumbling in my hand when I break them but won't burn. The wood smoking chips simply just smoke. I even tried burning pine cones that had fallen from my only 2 giant trees and they wouldn't burn - just produced gray smoke. I have no other trees or shrubs. The stove mentions it can be used twigs, leaves, branches, wood in addition to alcohol. I've watched your video several times to make sure I have the pieces oriented and assembled properly and it seems very clear how to use as a wood stove. Are hardwood pellets possible to burn using this stove with no accelerant (only matches or lighter and petroleum cotton balls) or do I absolutely need different wood like a bag of hickory chips? I want to burn clean and pine is definitely not desired...I thought getting the hardwood pellets would be as clean as I could get and would burn hot as they indicate on the bags.
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 4 жыл бұрын
Hi my friend, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Sorry to hear you are having trouble lighting the fuel in the stove. I'm not an expert but It sounds like an airflow problem. Most of the pellets that I have seen been used here in the UK are the wooden cat litter tray pellets. I haven't tried them my self but they are supposed to work well. I would imagine they are made from wood dust and chips and formed into pellets, so I don't think they will be as dense as hardwood pellets. It sounds like your stove was acting more like a smoker than a fire. They can take some work to get them going. I often blow air through it to start it off, then once it gets going it is fine. I would start off with a thin layer of pellets and light a fire on top. I tend to use birch bark or fatwood as my tinder as it burns hot and starts to ignite the main wood. Then once you have a decent flame then add more fuel. I hope this helps, all the best, Mark :)
@WebDesignMX05
@WebDesignMX05 4 жыл бұрын
@@markbailey2981 Here are the type of premium hardwood fuel pellets I have. They seem to be coated with a water-resistant shiny coating and attempting to light one or a few directly with the lighter just results in a chared mark and that's leaving the flame on it for more than a minute. firewoodhoardersclub.com/forums/threads/clean-energy-hardwood-pellets-review.1120/ So it seems that using an accelerant might be absolute "must" like Mark Young shows. I tried blowing air as you suggested but it didn't make it them burn so maybe coating them with a "Fuel 21" gel alcohol fuel similar to the idea of coating a cotton ball with petroleum jelly. I'll give this a try and hope it doesn't stink, not produce too much smoke. His review was pretty revealing and I hope to duplicate his results but as someone commented I want to grill so I will be trying to use a 50/50 mix of wood pellets/wood sticks so I can keep the heat down while sustaining a long 20-40min burn needed for grilling - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHKvn56mg956Zrc&ab_channel=MarkYoung

@Sanity Is Freedom LOL, I tried my best to retrieve it, but it just kept on sinking. The cat litter pellets are supposed to be a common fuel for them. @Sanity Is Freedom Thanks for the suggestion. Actually...I'm a city slicker and not around any real woods or woodshops nor looking to be. I just ordered a 10 lb of Pine Mountain STO StarterStikk 100% Fatwood ...which are dry and small enough to break to length and burn clean and trusting for novice with little experience visibly identifying woods by limb that burn clean. The aim was to build a small store of wood and with more experience upgrade build a bigger store of wood that meets my needs for cooking either lower or high heat and upgrade to something like maybe the Kelly Kettle which seems quite nice too. I'm so used to using canister fuel such as jetboil or coleman butane for small heating needs it feels quite ackward acclimating to using dry wood knowing nothing about it and trusting anything picked from woods which might be wet or give off toxic fumes/smoke if burned which was the experience I incurred when attempting to light from an abundant amount of pine cones. 🤣🤣🤣

Hi Saad, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment 👍. I tend to use split wood for the main fuel source for the stove. But a lot of people like to use the wooden cat litter pellets that you can buy. They are easy and clean to use, plus they burn for a long time. I hope you have had a nice weekend, all the best, Mark :)

An issue that I've seen with this stove (actually a titanium version) on amazon was that it isn't actually titanium but aluminum. I'm not sure whether that's true or not but apparently people are having issues with the stove melting during use which certainly wouldn't happen with titanium. An issue for the steel one is that 100% of steel produced in China is contaminated with lead, given that I would try to find an alternative either made from genuine titanium, or steel sourced from another country to avoid lead exposure (especially dangerous because of exposure to high heat and open flames that would produce lead vapors, and because it would be used in food/drink preparation which would be another source of exposure.)

Thank you my friend :) I also like the interlocking stoves myself. The small bushbox stove that I have is a great stove- a bit fiddly at times, but I like the small compact size. But these wood gas stoves are something else. If you have the room to carry one, then I would say it is worth it. This is a cheap stove compared to some, but it is a nice size when set up and feels very sturdy. Thanks again for watching, All the best, Mark. :)

I'm sure you will be very happy with it when it comes :) I haven't had time to try it yet, but a few people have recommended stacking the wood inside and lighting it from the top like an upside-down fire. Hi Phil, they do throw out a lot of heat when they are burning well, but the heat is mainly directed upwards. It would be ok to put your hands around. Hi AxemaN Racing, you can pick them up off Amazon or EBay. It is an MSR Stow-away pot 1.1ltr. All the best, Mark.

Hi Mark! Good to see you. Nice stove, I might get one myself to replace my lixada stove which is very similar, but the pot stand isn’t as good as this one. Take care brother.

Hi Edy, I hope you are keeping well brother. I was looking at the lixada myself stoves after you mentioned you had one. The delivery times were a bit too long, so it was a gamble when I ordered this one, but it seems to be OK. I'm amazed what you can get fro £20 nowadays :) Thanks for watching as always. All the best, Mark. :)

Try starting the stove with the larger chunks of wood in first, smaller twigs on followed by the birch bark. In other words an upside down fire. That works for me. The Solo Stove makers recommend doing it this way. I have the Solo Stove "Camp Fire" and have just ordered the smaller Tomshoo like yours. Looking forward to receiving and using it.

Hi David, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) Yeah when I'm using the stove for cooking then I tend to make an upside down fire in the stove. You are right about the longer burn time using it in this manner. If I am making a quick brew, then I just add a small amount of fuel and use it like a twig stove. I hope you are happy with the Tomshoo stove when it arrives :) Thanks again, all the best, Mark.

Hi Steve, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment :) The MSR pot I use is the Alpine Stowaway pot. It is the 775 ml pot. I think they do a slightly larger one too, but mine is the 775ml. I have seen them on amazon for around £18.00. I hope this helps :) All the best, Mark :)

Thanks Wade, yeah I was very impressed by how it burnt. I think it will take over from the folding stove for most of my cooking. Especially during the warmer months when they crack down on open fires. Have a great day mate, all the best, Mark. :)

@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Donna, many thanks for watching and for the comment :) The gloves are just a pair of leather work gloves. They are lined, so they do hold a bit more heat out. Most hard wear shops will sell them or garden centres. They also come in handy when cutting wood. The pot is a 1.1 ltr MSR Alpine Stowaway pot. You can pick them up quite cheaply from Amazon or eBay. All the best, Mark :)

Thankyou, Mark. Superhelpful. For a long, lightweight back packing trip, would this now be your 'first choice stove'?
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Muhammad, many thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. It is a great little stove for the money. If there was the fuel to run it, then I would defiantly pack it for a backpacking trip. If I was going up into the hills and mountains where fuel may be limited, the I would usually take a light weight gas stove. Weight wise though, it does seems to weigh the same as a gas stove and the medium sized gas cans that I carry. So for 90% of my uses nowadays, I would tend to pack it :) Have a great day brother, all the best, Mark. :)

Thanks, Mark Yes, a stove for all terrains on a long backing trip eg Coast to coast ideally has several options and I'm moving to the Tomshoo wood burner with a triangia alcohol stove as the back up.. Paul (from Paul Outdoors - a super and informative channel) has also just reviewed a tiny head valve / pot stand for a gas cannister: BRS 3000T gas stove (25grams)...and perhaps this is a simpler quicker option when 'on the go' over long distances. But I do love the way a woodburner 'connects' you more to your surroundings. 😊
@markbailey2981
@markbailey2981 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah it can be a tricky one when traveling over distance and varying terrain. The small gas stove sounds interesting, I will check out Pauls channel. But if you can find the wood along the way for fuel then I would take a wood gas stove. I'm not a serious back packer, so I like to spend time harvesting wood and cooking with a wood stove. I always tend to carry a small trangia spirit burner with me. It comes in very handy for a quick brew and as an additional cooking source. I often use it with a fire ring and the weight of them combined is very light. Like you say you will two options to cook with then :) Cheers Muhammad, all the best, Mark :)
