Thank Lynden, more great tips to put into practice. I love your openess and vulnerability. I'm really struggling with learning how to count. They say ABC, always be counting. I tend to listen to the drums, bass or where the beat is. I've found a local teacher and he is giving me jazz bits that have loads of 16ths in them and I just don't count that way. Any tips on how to mentally count and still play with confidence, as in thinking about reading music, tone and all the other stuff going on? Just keep doing what you are doing! I look at heaps of sax tutorials, yours is probably THE best.
@lyndenblades
@lyndenblades 14 күн бұрын
@@philmespel4372 Phil that’s incredibly kind of you to say, thank you. To mentally count and play with confidence is hard, and that’s why you’re finding it hard. My advice is to divide and conquer, repeat passages so many times that you don’t have to think about them in the same way anymore. If your brain has all that stuff going on at the same time, you won’t get to flow, so work on the individual elements, reading, tone and the notes that you’re playing individually and memorise as much as you can and then try putting it together. But remember that people with a lot of experience make it look easy, but it isn’t and if it takes you a while to get these things down and you’re finding it hard, that’s perfectly ok and normal. It’s much harder than it looks, but when you love it as much as you and I do, then it doesn’t matter! Does this help a little?

Good morning Lynden. Once again a from the heart video as you say. I truly and honestly look forward to every one of your videos that you put out. I have been following you for some time and find your instructional manner incredibly refreshing, relaxing and warm. I know that sounds silly, but take it as it is meant. I struggle to find the time and the enthusiasm sometimes to get practice in as I am sure most beginners do because we think we sound annoyingly loud and cr-p so it is hard. Personally, I find the scales practice with your simple backing tracks the most encouraging for me to pick my sax up and have blow. In the words of our greatest comedian, as long as you play the right notes, they do not necessarily have to be in the right order and its true to a degree!! There is one more thing that I think would be extremely useful to us for you do and that is call and response. I do apologise if you already have a video doing this. PS. 58 is not that old. Keep it coming young man. Norgs, Manchester. Coffee on its way old bean.

That last point is so ON!!! If you're not in the music, in your Sax, in the moment, so many problems will come to the front. I just play for myself, but when I'm not in the moment, I find it better to just hang it up for a few, take a break, get focused, then try again.

@lyndenblades
@lyndenblades 5 ай бұрын
Hi George, thank you so much for your lovely feedback and the reason why playing harmonics helps is that it gives the muscles of your face a really good workout and helps you develop your embouchure, giving you more control, strength and flexibility. Does that make sense? 🤝🤝😎😎🎷🎷

Great video Lynden. Just last week, I was lucky enough to have some face time with a jazz player in the family. These are all the points covered and it's finally starting to give me that satisfaction of tone quality. The sax you're playing also matters. You take an Otto Link and pair it with say Rampone & Cassani (which is a large bore instrument ) and you'll get a much spread and fluffy tone. On the other hand, take your Otto Link and put it on a Yamaha and the tone will be more centered and barky. Hence, the saxophone matters as much as your mouthpiece.
