Many thanks to Siccas for posting this video. It's illuminating to hear how much thought is involved in playing a classical musical instrument at a high level, and how clearly these ideas were explained.

Really awsome explanation. Top notch content here.

This is one of the best videos about tone production. Music is a performance art - amateur or professional it’s about communication. If your sound doesn’t project so people can understand you, what’s the point?

This is the best explanation of this subject I have seen. This gentleman has a great talent for communicating ideas.

There is a lot to understand here. As a harp luthier, I designed soundboards for my customers to produce the quality of sound that was required for their major performances, which would be very bright for orchestral musicians, and warmer tones for others. Unlike a guitar, there is minimal latitude for different tone colors with a single harp. This interview encapsulates so much that I knew as a harpist/luthier, and helps me as a beginning guitar student. Thank you!

I thought this was REALLY helpful. And they are concepts I haven’t heard expressed and I listen to a LOT of interviews tutorials and master classes. I would expect to the space you are in determines the type of pieces you play. But most helpful to me was the demonstrations of using time as a part of dynamics. I’m so Leary of bright tone. But I had to go run and try something with that concept in mind and I felt like “oo this opens up a whole new way of thinking good things”. I really appreciated this. Thank you doing it.

I believe that sacrificing a nice tone that you get in a small room for the sake of being audible in a concert hall is currently less desirable. Audio amplification has reached such a high quality that it has become a decent alternative. There are more things involved here than just varying your tone production with your fingers. An excellent guitar for recording and intimate performances is different from a concert guitar where the need to be loud implies many disadvantages regarding tone quality. Finally, the guitar is an intimate instrument, it is not suited for concertos or playing with a big orchestra.

The guitar is like a small orchestra with 4 octaves, and today times are more turbulent than ever before and more and more people find their peace in listening to and playing the classical guitar. I personally know several people who could hardly wait to retire from work so they could dedicate themselves to playing the guitar.

Bravo Maestro Caballero! This is one of the topics I personally like to indagate as well from a luthier prospective! Thanks for sharing!! Gabriele Lodi luthier

Complete and utter nonsense. Mr. C needs to get some lessons from a physicist (acoustician) before embarrassing himself by stating the opposite of known acoustic facts. 🤦🏼♂️

I've read somewhere that concert players prefer a new guitar for the clarity and projection, contrary to the warmer mellower sound of a broken in guitar, is there truth to that?
@thomaswarner8884Сағат бұрын
Glenn Gould talked about this in documentarys. He hated tone travesty and hence gave up playing in big halls.
@HelloSpyMyLie52 минут бұрын
That’s not really how it works. For piano this is not a problem. Glenn’s was the culture of waiting for the performer to make a mistake on stage- thought to be a perversion of sacred music such as Bach Pianos cannot control tone as a guitarist on any level

Some very helpful advice. Still, as has been already noted, I don’t see why light amplification isn’t simply the solution. A nice mic and AER sounds fine, and might be a better trade off than pushing technique to get more volume, or playing an instrument that sounds harsh or brittle. I suppose the reason is to maintain guitar as a pure classical instrument, free from amplification. Not sure it’s worthwhile in the end though.
@chupieСағат бұрын
But even a small space that doesn’t require amplification might have deader acoustics that would swallow sound and in that case this would also apply. As well as the other use of illusory dynamics. That would apply in any space.

Maybe classical guitars aren't meant to be played in big halls if you're forced to play with that unappealing clacky tone?
@FiddleSticks8003 сағат бұрын
You are onto something. I play classical guitar for myself and my family and friends like the majority of players out there (Im no where near the level of the pros). The concert guitars I have played, I don’t much care for. Similarly, the double top guitars don’t appeal to me. It’s not about volume for me.
@chupieСағат бұрын
I didn’t think it was clacky. But I too am always at a loss using brighter tone. I felt this was a great concept of using it in dynamics particularly. I imagine that one’s choice of repertoire would also be influenced by how large or not the space is. And weather you are against an orchestra will make a difference in how a brighter tone comes off.
@chupieСағат бұрын
@@FiddleSticks800but it wasn’t about volume. It was about tonal illusion and the actual science of whether a tone comes through or not.
