E-Standard (maybe Eb) tuning running through real tubes with stacked gain stages gave us some timeless tones come from that 80s Shrapnel Records era. Then there is still headroom for bass and drums to have their own voice. Bring it back!

That’s a solid point! Especially leaving room for tue bass and drums to carry the lower frequencies!

I was born in 64 and love 80s music. Can I get more of these songs on Patreon? Do you break them down and show us how to play them on Patreon if I subscribe. I just got a tonex pedal, has good Sims. Pretty cheap. Really enjoying it through headphones for bedroom jamming when wife's asleep and thrugh my 8" monitors when she's not., there's plenty if good options out there, tube are awesome, but tech has come a loooong way.

Great sounding tone bro. I'll take it a step further than you did. "Even if you have the exact same rig that [insert-your-favorite-guitarist] uses, it still won't sound like [insert-your-favorite-guitarist] because it's YOU playing! So many variables. Too many to count. Did you ever get yourself a load box so you could use your beastly amp with cab IR's? If not, we need to start you up a fund drive! Get ya an Ox Box or a Torpedo. :-D
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
That’s so true!! And that’s why I encourage folks not to chase someone else’s tone! I’ve thought of the Torpedo. But I’ll actually turn this thing up a bit when recording tracks…it produces a nice tone!

To me, the gold standard of classic metal guitar tone is Iron Maiden's tone on the Piece of Mind album. That tone is super present, but without being harsh at all. It has just right amount of top end swish, but only enough to give it a classy bite. The low end rumbles just a little, but it is only enough to create the impression of a large, loaded room, while still being super tight. But the real stand out about that tone is the midrange. It is thicker and more compact than anything I have ever heard (maybe Tony Iommi can rival that, but I've always found his tone too thick, to the point that it just overpowers everything else). To date, I have not heard anyone being able to recreate the Piece of Mind guitar tone. I, myself, have tried and tried, but never got close enough. It is not something that can be attained with just a Marshall and an SM57. The classic metal showcased in the video above is more of a hair metal, American tone, as opposed to the British midrange tone that I consider the quintessential classic metal guitar tone.

Agreed. Also helps that they had Martin Birch, a huge budget. In some interviews. Dave Murray said they recorded the amps "in a huge wooden room with a ton of mics". I'm sure that they had a ton of wild mics, room and ambiance (the tone almost sounds like it has verb or light chorus on it, though not as much as Somewhere In Time or Seventh Son"). We will never know exactly, so that's the magic!
@TheTimeProphet3 жыл бұрын
Nobody knows what the Mids do. I just stick it about halfway normally, might experiment with that
@jasonstallworth3 жыл бұрын
I think mids are just a preference in what you want as far as tone goes. But you also have to adjust to fit into the mix if you're recording with other instruments.
