We did the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the first day of the new year. It is a 19.4km hike which takes between 6 to 8 hours that is recognised as the best day walk in New Zealand. Tongariro is the ancestral mountain to the iwi of Ngati Tuwharetoa. Visitors are requested to respect the area: do not climb the summit, streams and lakes are not to be touched, and no littering.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing was challenging but a doable hike. The hiking trail passes through some of the most stunning volcanic landscapes. It was a long and tiring hike but the views especially the Emerald and the Blue Lake made it all worth it. We highly recommend this hike to anyone looking for an unforgettable hiking experience.
