Tongariro Crossing Including Ngauruhoe (Mt Doom)

Filmed 5 years ago. How our world is different in 2021. Now you can walk the Tongariro Crossing and Mt Doom (Ngaruahoe) and not see another single person! NZ has been amazing to explore with no tourists in the country. Happy to be a kiwi, but I loved your video. I have hiked this crossing six times over the years, every time was different. Nga mihi.

Did this trek with friends at university in 1989 in the middle of winter. Day 1 - dropped off on the Desert Road and hiked in to the first cabin where we spent the night. Day 2 - hiked up and over the mountain to a cabin near the hot pools on the western(?) side, Day 3 - rest day and enjoying the hot pools. Day 4 - headed south(?), up and over the mountain near the rim of the volcano. Stayed at the last cabin. Day 5 - walked out to the Chateau.

2022 update - From the info on the crossing CULTURALLY SENSITIVE AREA: The peaks of Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro are sacred to the local iwi and they have respectfully requested that visitors not climb to the summits. DOC rangers have removed signage as of 2017 to discourage visitors from accessing the summits against the requests of the traditional Maori owners. While not illegal to climb to the summits, please hold respect for the local iwi and their connection to this land and mountain and refrain from climbing the peak.
