Not only is Mr. Pahud an amazing and natural flutist but he's very generous with sharing what he knows, breaking concepts down so they are readily understood. What a gift he is to the flute community. Thanks Emmanuel!

It quickly becomes obvious that there is far more one must learn to master technique in order to play music with real proficiency. The entire body and mind are engaged in finding the precise combination of nuance. There is a lesson here for everyone, for us in non-musical fields of creative work as well. Emmanuel Pahud is a living treasure.

OMG! I'm hopelessly in platonic love with his tone! What an amazing flutist! And it all seems easy when he explains... if only! Thank you for the upload!

"its a wind instrument, it's not a lip instrument." I know that should be obvious but im going to remember it now whenever i feel my lips get too tight.

Amazing tutorial and great directions for my practice. Does anyone know the Orchestra Concerto he is excerpting at 5:00? I would love to listen to it. That rapid low tonguing is incredible (and currently impossible for me!)

I found a version called Concerto for Flute and Piano, as a free pdf a few days ago. Edited by Jean Pierre Rampal. He speaks too fast when he says it and I'd never heard of Khachaturian. So I'd been searching for catchaturean, catchaturian etc. If I try and play those low Ds quickly, the sound starts to get less and less. If you still can't find it, it goes. D-D, F E F

Manny Pahud is amazing !! Flotenmusik 1993 was the first time I heard him. Would still like to emulate some of that stuff he did on that cd with the same fervor. 🙂

GREAT teacher.., I have just started to study flute- since 2 months, but am a singer and recognize, how similar the technique is with air, tongue, placement etc- side recognition- Pahud would be a bass, whe he woud be a singer, but the flute is more like an atherial soprano

04:48 Yes. However, the attack will still sound ”normal/regular”, what if every note has a dot above? There is not way how to give a sound with strong attack and shorter (like a note with a dot on the top) I mean in fast passages.

I think Emmanuel Pahud is probably speaking on the general idea of flow of air (even in staccato passages) as opposed to tightening the muscles of lips and tongue. My impression is that underlying his exposition was the technique of diafragma staccato, that doesn't rely on the tongue's more incisive movement. That is trained by doing staccato notes without using the tongue, focusing the air without tightening the lips (nor the throat) and using your diafragma to rhythmically blowing the air and getting a full resonating staccato, as much as your legato. That may be hard in the beginning, but once you get a good resounding staccato using the flux of air or breath, you just add the tongue in order to get a more defined attack to each note. Monsieur Pahud suggested that by saying "flute is a breath instrument and not a tongue instrument" and elsewhere he said articulation was something done with breath and not the tongue. Training quick diafragma staccato is demanding on your diafragma muscles and may be helpful too in learning the correct technique of vibrato, not using the throat like a goat's screaming. Monsieur Pahud is just introducing a general concept, and certainly in a personal lesson he would teach technical exercises to put it in practice - and his performance is the best evidence of his theory!
