I am so old that I read The Bluest Eye when it was first published and I was just devastated by it. It was even more amazing because we weren't used to this kind of writing and the sensitive representation of these issues. Her writing is just beautiful, and you do feel for all the characters. I have since read most of her books.

Hi, you! I'm a brazilian black woman and I've been studying english for a while. I have just finished a book in english for the first time in my life: The bluest eye. It totally broke my heart! Thank you for the video. I'm afraid I don't have words enough in my english lexico to explain how amazing, powerfull and also painfull this book is. Those feelings that surround Pecola are consequences of racism, and it's so sad to admite that somethimes I know exetly how she fells, because I've been there.

I love so much your review of The Bluest Eye. The breaking of innocence through social icons has caused Pecola to question what love should stand on as beauty cannot be associated with black color. A psychological depression that brought her to seek for divine miracle so to be accepted both by the family and the society. So here stems Toni Morrison's deep concern about conciliating social gazes between blacks and whites in America. Thank you for your video.

I am reading The Bluest Eye and absolutely loving every page of the book. This is the second book by Toni Morrison and the other one I have read is Beloved. I love The Bluest Eye more.

Hi Jo the Great! Thank you for sharing your detailed review of this timeless amazing book, especially your interpretation of the moral of the story. Beauty does some in all forms, and our world continues to need more love, compassion, and validation. I don't know where you live, but if you live anywhere near Philadelphia, the fantastic Arden Theatre is producing/showing The Bluest Eye now through April 8th 2018. The cast is totally awesome, and are receiving amazing reviews. I have heard that the audiences are spellbound, and deeply moved by that dramatic and powerful darkess. Many are commenting on the Arden Theatre Company Facebook site, and on other FB sites.

Hey, I'm not sure if you look at these comments anymore but I'm doing an entire project on Toni Morrison and about the themes of her novels. One of the biggest ideas and maybe a theme from this book is how the eyes tell everything people are thinking its never really about what they say or how they act its all in the distant look or hooded eyes that tell the reader what they are thinking. Would you think that was something she did intentionally along with the majority of men in the book turning out to be evil even Mr. Henry and Louis Junior? Is there a reason they turned this way. There are so many incredible themes in this book it's difficult to just pick three.

Mashup 2015 I always read through my comments so thanks for watching my video. First, I will say that I didn’t even consider the way that eyes are spoken about in the novel. That’s an interesting observation that I would love to hear more about. Second, I don’t think that the men were written as evil necessarily. Maybe at first, but as we dive into the father’s past we learn about his difficult background and what led to the current situation. I’m not condoning what he did but I think it shows us that people are complex. Black men and women are no different.

Pecola thought if she had different eyes that her parents wouldn't fight because they wouldn't want beautiful eyes to see that and how the boys wouldn't hit Claudia because they didn't want to with such beautiful eyes watching them(Maureen). Along with all of that the eyes are truly the window to the soul in this book even when Pecola is buying candy she sees a vacancy in the store clerks eyes. I don't know if this was intentional but its definitely a very interesting part of the novel. As far as being told about her fathers past is there a possibility that she is indicating that we as a society have played a part in making him this way because we created that environment for him? Thank you for the reply its great to read and hear another point of view it just keeps adding layers to this storyline.
