I have heard the reasoning why the vi was called the submediant numerous times but this time it finally clicked.

Absolutely amazing. Very good and simple explanation of a complex subject. Very quick but the beauty is the video can be paused. I love your approach.

Thanks this helps a lot..I bought a package lesson but they didn't go into detail. They just said oh here's three tonic chords, two sub dominant, and two dominant there ya go. I'm like wtf why three tonic why?? Haha this helps a lot. Thanks.

a practical note, a musical anthropology question: 1/ wish all pieces - office, hamilton - had illustrated and labeled the chord progressions; 2/ is the 'longing for resolution' based purely on musical conventions - our ear 'looks for' what it's 'used to hearing'? or is it there some 'human' music consciousness of tones that makes tonics sound resolved, 'at home,' etc?
@clairenime2 жыл бұрын
I’ve been in music for several years, and to be honest, I never knew what tonics where. At least now I won’t have to awkwardly nod in class anymore haha

Question. The submediant chord (Am7 in C major say) moving to a dominant chord (say G7 in Cmajor). In this situation does (or can) the Submediant (Am7) chord have Sub dominant function?🤔

The 3rd & 6th chords in the scale degree (read: key) can stand in for the 1st chord (tonic chord) in the scale degree

Please explain 6/8 timing
@EmoryBlake4Music4 жыл бұрын
6 beats to a measure and the 8th note gets one beat. Hence 6/8. At slower tempi, it's easy to feel each of those 6 8th notes pass by and we can count it in 6...one eight note, one beat. At faster tempi (for example, a 6/8 march) it's easier and more practical to count the first group of 3 eights notes as "1" and the second group of 3 eight notes as "2". Compare "oh holy night" or "Ave Maria"...a slow 6/8 (you'll find that it's easy to count each of the 6 passing 8th notes...1,2,3,4,5,6) and "jingle bell rock" (a quick 6/8, giving a feel of 2/4 with 8th notes that "swing" and can be counted as duple meter ...1-2, 1-2.) For this reason, 6/8 is referred to as a compound meter. This is easier explained in a video with musical examples and I understand you may have been asking Mr. Strickland to make a video about this. Granted my explanation is not the best, I encourage you to keep looking and I hope it will click soon. Good luck!
