My earliest memories of watching late night TV when I was young was staying up to 11:30 at night in the summer to watch the Steve Allen Show. I would laugh my butt off at his escapades in the downstairs family room as my folks slept upstairs. Steve Allen was my hero. Looking at these old kinescopes now, I am overwhelmed with memories at just how good he was and the intelligence he brought to all of his TV work. It stands the test of time. I know it is just the reconnection, but I miss my friend Steve Allen a lot, 67 years later. He is clearly an under-appreciated genius of our times. Thank you, Steve, for all the joy you gave to me in my earlies years. I love you and cherish what you gave to me.

I was there too, way back when. But while many things have changed, I think we also acquired some nice things along the way. Of course since we were the adults during this time period, we had a lot to do with creating the world we’re now lining in.

@Robert I did an interview with Steve Allen for an article I was writing a year before he died. They were recorded ... The reason hardly any survived is when NBC moved from New York to California ... So as to take less with them in the move, someone young given the decision of what to take and what to destroy, decided not to take all the Tonight Shows taped before the move, even the first couple years of Johnny Carson didn't make it in the move to Calif ... One of the reasons Carson had the tapes become his property (so NBC couldn't do the same thing in the future) The ones thay remain today may have been borrowed by industry people from the NBC vaults before the move and LUCKILY were NOT RETURNED BEFORE the move. Steve said if they would have contacted him before they destroyed the programs he would have paid to have them all moved to a storage facility and kept them all at his own expense from that point forward ... But no one let him know beforehand.

I believe that sometime that same week, Steve Allen and his producers had the U.S. Marines stage a mock landing on Miami Beach, which panicked some guests in nearby homes and motels, who thought that Florida was being invaded!

I only have time right now to watch about the first 5 minutes of this but it's so amazing to me that so much of this seems completely unrehearsed. I think that says a lot about Steve Allen and that producers trusted that he would keep the show moving even though they may not even know what the hell is going to happen 🤣
