The did not fear the horde, but instead could barely contain their excitement. As wave after wave of man and blade crashed against Spartan steel the spartans had but one concern. They did not enter battle seeking survival, for they sought only to die in the glory of war. To be remembered as unbreakable warriors. They cared not for how many the foe or how well armored and armed they were. To face such a foe is a treat, and the only thought that crosses their mind is "how many will I bring down before I fall?"

Neither you nor I could ever know what truly happened back in their time. We only have accounts of their feats and records of their culture. Just because it seems unbelievable or impossible doesn't necessarily mean it didn't happen. I don't know what makes you believe spartans are ordinary, nor will I judge your opinion. Just don't try to ruin the ideal, the symbol, that is the spartan for others. Some view them as a source of inspiration to get healthier, others view it as an inspiration in general. What need is there to take that away from them?

Athens beat them, Thebes beat them, the Persians would've steamrolled them had it not been for the other Greeks who were there that day defending the hot gates. Was the defense against the Persians a military feat? Yes. Was it as legendary as people claim? No, they died.

I can see a story line, of Leonidas in Mortal Kombat, by using the Sands of Time changing the past of his demise ending the life Xerxes, and celebrating freedom across the entire country of Greece. They should ask Gerard Butler to use his voice for the role. It could start with Quan Chi bringing Leonidas back to life doing his bidding, but towards the end Leonidas turns against him, and completes his quest to regain power in Sparta.
