Why are South Africans so OBSESSED with the "with us or against us" thing. Like maybe some people just don't find her funny. I think she's funny, but whatever - folks are allowed to like what they like. Come on Mzansi......... next thing we're going to be offended if someone doesn't like All Bran Flakes.
@aviweyantolo50233 жыл бұрын
the "with us or against us" is how SA was built. it how SA is in reality till today. I know for example that you have never lived in a township by looking at your European name. its a reality not an "obsession"
@PeterJohnJnb3 жыл бұрын
@@aviweyantolo5023 Hey Aviwe, firstly you shouldn't make assumptions about people you don't know. You don't KNOW anything about me, so let's keep this civil no? :-) Secondly, I think you might be overthinking this a little bit. This was a comment on how some people in the comment section were suddenly launching into insults towards each other for negative critique of her comedic style. That's what I was referencing. Not liking her as a comedienné could be something as simple as personal preference, not a comment on the lived experience of South Africans. This is something we tend to do in this country. We conflate issues that have nothing to do with each other instead of looking at incidents in isolation - which is sometimes (yep, not always, but sometimes) necessary. Also, realities only perpetuate when WE make it so.
@aviweyantolo50233 жыл бұрын
@@PeterJohnJnb Do you live in a township though? did you go to a school with pit toleits? thats reality for some and I don't think those who live in it made it. yes lets be civil by all means Have a good evening
@PeterJohnJnb3 жыл бұрын
@@aviweyantolo5023 Hello again Aviwe. See, THESE are the conversations I enjoy, so thank you for taking it in such a good spirit! I don't live in a township, in that much you are correct and I've mercifully never been subjected to the indignity of pit toilets. Our lived experience is very different in this country and I wish it was as simple as just blaming race. (yep, I said it. Simple). However, the nuances have changes of late. We are now more a class based society than a race based society - I wonder which is worse? That's a genuine thought, I'm not being sassy. I'm not going to patronise you with stories of all the time I've spent in townships and establish my "credentials" because I have "black friends" - frankly, most of them are higher up on the social strata than I am - but then, I've learned the most from those who are not. Like many (sadly we're not at the stage where we can say most yet), white middle class Afrikaans South Africans, my gratitude extends to so many, many different people who've informed my consciousness - and it is an African consciousness. You alluded somewhat tongue in cheek I expect to my "European surname" and it's true, my ultimate ancestry is Dutch - but I, and many like me are simply no longer Dutch and have not been for a very, very long time. It's true we've struggled in this country - and then we perpetuated those lessons in a macabre "pay it forward", our British masters taught us well. I don't believe that 26 years can fix hundreds of years of colonial rule and half a century of Apartheid - but the Trillion Rand that disappeared from our country courtesy of Zuma inc, would have gone some way to repair those pit toilets. I have a thought I'm dealing with at the minute and I'm trying to think of how to expand it, all considerations taken - what if (now stay with me here) what if there was a way that a common narrative could be created that moves away from "then" and focuses solely on what could be? What if there was a way, that we could bind our COLLECTIVE consciousnesses to a common future where everyone has a stake and we are no longer slaves to our past (terminology used on purpose). Just imagine if we pour our passion into projects that realise unlimited potential, instead of clinging to pain, and hurt and anger. If you had a magic paint brush that you could use to create your most perfect SOUTH AFRICAN future...what would that painting look like? Have a wonderful day, wherever you find yourself in the motherland :-)
