I remember working on those planes in the 80-s when doing my military service, realising It was a really great period of my life. And it was. J35 Draken still is a stunning beautiful plane.

For me this is the most beautiful jetplane ever made..and I remember them patroling the swedish borders during the s.c "cold war" in the 70-ies....it still flies with honor.

It was fantastic to see this plane live again, last time I saw Draken flying it was somewhere in the nineties when FiAF was still using this plane. What a great plane, I hope Swedes keep this beauty flying many years still, great piece of an aviation engineering. Congrats for good camera work, great video.
@anderslind68336 жыл бұрын
One interesting fact: Theoretically this aircraft had no limit to the max speed. Because the RAM power increased faster than the drag. In reality, lack of fuel limited the max speed.

The Draken also has some quite violent stalling properties. :)

diamonddog257 the engine is only slightly less powerful than gripens , the fuel economy is bad only but power is almost of todays standard.

there is a another doc about draken were the we had some french pilots(and planes) doing some training and 2 draken was gona catch up for the training and they went like full throttle, when they were like 4km(or so cant rem) away they throttled down and still passed the 2 french pilots by miles =) so it was one of the fasted planes of its time.

For its time, pure brilliance. Also looking cool as hell.

I marvel at Sweden, a country with a small population but the industries they have in producing top class automobiles in the likes of Volvo and Saab, and jet fighters such as Draken, Viggen, and currently the Grippen. No other small nations can be compared to Sweden in terms of such technological breakthrough except Israel in some aspects.
@finntastique38916 жыл бұрын
I totally agree. I have the highest respect for SAABs aircraft engineers, who bere behind J-29 Tunnan, J32 Lansen, J-35 Draken, J-37 Viggen and JAS-39 Gripen.

I have been head first into an intake duct to a Draken. It was defunct, not-running one but still it was an actual, piece of history that flew for the Finnish Air Force. I went as far as I could, before I went back and scraped my nuts while I was pulled the rest of the way out. That was back in 2014-2015. I've also almost gotten my nuts burnt by the control wires at the top of the airframe by sitting at the wrong spot with the covers removed and the controls being moved. My nuts have gone through more things than Sids in Age Age, and that's only with Saab Drakens.

These always meant a risk of war when i grew up, the roar of ten of these up together is massive and i was pretty afraid of a division of them passing. J35j upgraded version was active to 1998, and could have gotten a new engine after that but more effort was put in to gripens agility. Compared to viggen these never got same material problems so they could have been flying still but the complex mechanical inside was in need of modern solutions and thus too costly . Still they have several benefits over many other planes so i hope they make a new model. The strangest thing about these is that they do turn pretty fast without a forward wing wich suits high speed, a very proper design. The export versions did not always utilise missiles as the home wersions had and probably led to an early decomission even though not really justified.

A Fighter that could equal the performance of the BAC Lightning on literally half the power!
@LRRPFco52 Жыл бұрын
BAC Lightning had faster take-off and climb rate because it had 2 Rolls Royce Avons, whereas Draken has 1 Avon (most people don't realize the Draken was powered by the Rolls Royce Avon). Draken is under-powered, but has superior aerodynamics to the Lightning. It's almost half the weight of a Lightning, so a more efficient design. If we were to approach it with modern construction methods using carbon fiber spars, runners, and skin, with a modern engine and DFLCS, it would be a rocket ship and less prone to deep stalling. Beautiful airplane though.

@jussik5625 жыл бұрын
We trust in Finland in Swedish technology as the fighters and cars which goes well in winter too. Sadly Sweden has droven blueeydly it's own military force down! In the 70's Sweden had the fourht strongest airforce in Europe. Draken and Wiggen are both oldfashioned fighters now but maybe the Gripen X should be the next Finnish fighter.
@rolluk45236 жыл бұрын
btw - why not two engines?you already have two simetric air chanels..... for one engine.... so why not for two?
@Dimetropteryx6 жыл бұрын
Because then you would need an aircraft twice as big to accommodate intakes and fuel tanks twice as large and you'd double the maintenance requirements. And you'd be able to build half the number of aircraft and you'd have to have a longer runway. Now, WHY would you want two engines? If you ever get the chance to stand next to one of these in real life, you'll notice how tiny they really are. They don't need two engines and they wouldn't gain anything from it.
@Skyisnotalimit6 жыл бұрын
I dear to say that this one would outrun lot of fighters today... They still don´t know how fast it is...
@superskullmaster6 жыл бұрын
You might be right, but todays fighters aren't all about speed. The F-104 and F-4's were fast as hell to but couldn't turn for shit, same as this plane.
@zombieman95096 жыл бұрын
superskullmaster Turning dogfights are a thing of the past, most kills will be BVR. Integration of battlefield information, stealth and so on. Or just unmanned drones, swarms of them. Turning radius is nice but wont save a plane doing cobras any more than the speed of these beautiul Darkens
