Obviously they were not lovers, but they are, in a certain very powerful metaphorical sense, when they sing songs like this together. Because that's the kind of song this is. A Cole Porter song. They are all about sex. They reek of it. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dated briefly before they started making movies together. They were never an item, per se, and 'dating' didn't always mean what it does now. But they were paired as the second couple in Flying Down to Rio, and people really liked their chemistry. Their first big film as the leads was The Gay Divorcee, based on the Cole Porter stage musical that was where Astaire first established himself as a star away from his sister Adele (who was sometimes his love interest in the musicals they appeared in, yeah, I know, ew, but their characters weren't related, it's theater). So their first big number in that movie based on the play was this song. If you haven't seen it, you can watch the dance here on KZbin. It's not what you'd call subtle. He sings her the song, to keep her from walking away. He's seducing her. She resists. He persists. She falls under his spell, he under hers, and it's just flat-out gorgeous. Breathtaking. I've seen it in a theater. People are practically holding their breaths in the audience. How could anything be so beautiful? So the dance ends, there's a bit of space for the audience to applaud (and they do, trust me). Then he pulls out a cigarette case. Offers her one. Everybody in teh audience laughs. They were both fully clothed, formally attired, still are. But they just had fully consensual intercourse. Through music, song, and dance. Everybody in the audience who is not incredibly naive knows what just happened, and the cigarette joke is just a way to acknowledge it. That's the Cole Porter way, and let's just say it wasn't all metaphor for him. The man hosted gay orgies. ;)

I was a professional Tenor Lyrica. Or Opera Singer: When I first saw and heard of the “Lady GaGa” what I saw was a flash performer; manufactured into a style. I did not see any depth to her. Over the years of her being critiqued by persons and so-called professionals: I truly thought fair enough they must know her music better than her fans. Then I saw her take to Mr. Bennett - a true, true golden-era musician. White-swing; jazz and blues. I then thought maybe this GaGa has depth. I then started to delve into her musical roots: She had done everything to get known. I am soo very much glad that this beautiful woman did: More than just her music (which in itself and format is legendary in its own right); this woman is supporting all type of communities, including this community that the late Mr. Bennett held dear to himself. Such a true and leading-light in a dim, dark world, even within music. Bravo, Brava and Bravi Mis GaGa. May your God bless you as you grace us!
