RIP Tony. Thanks for all the great American songs you have sung in a 70+ years career.

I don't know how Tony Bennett managed to find so much exposure to a wider, younger audience in the 90s, but I was one of those kids and I'm glad for it. He found relevance in a way that he deserved. For me, the big moment came when I was on a spring break trip to Las Vegas and we were somewhere outside of town and heard Shadow of Your Smile on a station that played all of the American standards. It was a perfect moment and my appreciation became life long.

I was working at Sears in the 1990s. We had one of those cheesy video walls, and we’d get a new tape every month. One day this song pops up, and I swear we never played another tape in that machine for as long as I worked there. Every day Tony coming up on the mix was the high point. Farewell, Tony. You made the world a better place than you found it.

The 90s might've been one of the most diverse eras for music. Mr. Bennett's comeback in the heart of the alternative/grunge era seems surprising and unlikely, but it makes sense when you think about it. A laid back jazz song like this with just a teeny bit of a (for then) contemporary production fits in with the mid 90s, since there were so many types of music co-existing, and it seems like the very beginning of a time when young people were more open to older/different styles of music. Of course, his second comeback doing duets with Lady GaGa is equally impressive.

I still remember the day when I bought this CD. I was 17 or 18 and I stopped by Circuit City almost weekly to purchase at least one or two CDS every week. I had seen this video one time on MTV or VH1 and I really liked it! I went to Circuit City and picked this out along with a new CD by Matthew Sweet (Altered Beast). Both albums were one of my favorite albums of the year!

The first time I saw this video was on Thanksgiving morning, 1993. I was in Times Square with some friends, waiting for the Macy's Parade to start. They had an enormous video screen on the Times Building, and they played the new Tony Bennett music video, "Steppin' Out," with his voice echoing through the square, bouncing off the skyscrapers. It was the beginning of Tony's comeback with the MTV generation. Now, they've just announced that Tony Bennett's upcoming two shows at Radio City Music Hall (with his friend Lady Gaga) will be the final shows of his career. Afterwards, he will retire at age 95. It's been a terrific run, and the last 30 years were the icing on the cake!

"what the fuck you kids listening to? tony bennett? are you on fucking drugs?" "hey, don't talk to your kids that way!" "dad, stay out of this!" "no, you stay out of it you stupid yuppie! i'm glad my grandchildren are enjoying this. now go to your fucking room! btw kids. this group wu-tang clan. this is the shit!"
