Easily one of the top 5 most powerful mobsters of all time & probably #2 overall. What’s crazy is almost no one has ever even heard of him. He was the main mover in Vegas & Hollywood AND had the largest controlling stake in the Teamsters (more than the Genovese -they were in essence working for him) + every other national union. The smartest thing he ever did was have other people be the public face/head of the Outfit.

It depends.... Batters easy top 5 but he greatly benefited from not having to deal with politics of dealing with other families in Chicago like in New York...I'd say he was behind Luciano and then Costello in power (Vito was a thug) but then after Costello retires it was def him and Gambino who wielded the most power..The two of them were incredibly cunning, cagey & vicious..I would say though the Outfit were probably more effective in bumping guys they wanted throughout the rest of the country.. When they wanted a guy whacked anywhere they could get it done with no problem. So in terms of power throughout the country Accardo was probably number 1 but NYC was still the epicenter of the mob and New York had the most wealth and so Gambino prly takes the nod..

#1 in my book. He learned under Al Capone and took the best of Al and avoided the worse by avoiding the limelight. When you consider longevity, money brought in and actually transitioning to a legitimate wealthy businessman avoiding jail and dying of old age surrounded by his loved ones and even the quality if his personal family, indicating he took care of business at home, he is number one. You can tell how even at this old age he is handling his interrogators mostly by himself and without taking the 5th or attorney assistance. You can tell how sharp he is even when old
@Reloadeez

Based on longevity, never doing any prison time, no felony convictions, he probably is the most successful mobster in history. Meyer Lansky is another one, although he wasn't a made man.

@@cirodimarzio8688.... Nooooo, the moves he made that allowed him to run the Outfit for 40 years, most of that time secretly behind a front boss, without spending a night in jail (maybe one night, this is a disputed fact) You proved my point actually, you obviously have very little information about Accardo and formed an opinion based on this video- exactly my point. If you want an actual instance of his genius, I'd say the trap he set to remove Giancana qualifies. There's a lot to it, but Giancana was in a position where he either defended himself in court- which meant he might win his case, but for talking about mob business he would be removed, probably killed, or he only took the 5th- which would lead to him loding his case, going to jail and being removed.... its really quite an interesting story if you're into that kinda shit. Anyway, thanks for backing up my point in my original post.

I get what you’re saying, and I too believe he was more of a consigliere or “senior advisor” rather than THE man or more of “chieftain.” More of a powerful member of the council rather than THE chairman. That being said, he still remained unharmed, active, and free while staying near the top of arguably the strongest crime family in the country. PLUS he actually WAS “boss,” from when Paul Ricca went to jail until Giancana stepped into the role (at least 10 years) during the ‘40s & ‘50s...AND certainly became the “senior chairman” for awhile in the ‘70s after Ricca died (I think the brutal fallout of his house being burglarized proves as much). So, no matter which way you say it, Accardo was one of the most influential mobsters in the country for quite some time.....

@BudsCartoon
@BudsCartoon 2 жыл бұрын
Then you should know that Accardo and Chicago was never "mafia." The last chance the mafia had at grabbing Chicago died with the Gennas, Frankie Uale and Joe Aiello. The Outfit was the remnants of the Capone gang. Not Sicilian, not mafia, not derived from Black Hand. They never did initiation ceremonies or had "made" guys.
@CrookedRosePOD
@CrookedRosePOD 2 жыл бұрын
@@BudsCartoon well the word mafia origin is still debated theres no clear answer to the history of it, also yes they called themselves the outfit just like detroit calls themselves corporation. The term mafia changed overtime and began to be used loosely to italian organized crime. We dont know if they did or didnt have initation ceremonies or if they had just different ways to make bones. But Chicago was one of the original seats on the commission, I believe it was nitty or ricca so I think j can say mafia
@BudsCartoon
@BudsCartoon 2 жыл бұрын
@@CrookedRosePOD Well no a mafia family wouldn't have leaders that were Polish, Welsh, Norther Italian, German, etc. By the 30s after the death of Joe Aiello (NYs last chance to install a sicilian mafia family in Chicago) New York had no other choice but to make nice with Chicago. Of course they invited Chicago into the commission. There are no initiation ceremonies. If you're with a crew, you're with a crew.
