"Most of the fighters that I emulated were real lightweight guys, guys like Tony Canzoneri, Kid Chocolate, Henry Armstrong...the little guys that were just so exciting to watch. And that's how come I knew I would be an exciting fighter because I had the speed and the power" - Mike Tyson

This was a really good put together video. Tony had some of the best movement and feinting, I've ever seen in a boxer. Surprised there isn't a published biography on him . Found nothing on Amazon. Other boxing greats have one.

cus damato loved the slipping and weaving of tony, and tyson emulated it, especially canzoneris habit of sticking his tongue out at the fighter

Fighters back then were FIGHTERS...tough as nails. Most modern day fighters are all flash and no substance....12 rd title fights and early stoppages, fighting 1x per year etc. They are some modern fighters that are the exception to the rule, but they are few and far between. All the Floyd Mayweather Jr. hype...lol he'd be lucky to be in the top 10 of his wt class from the 20's - 80's.

That footwork, not like Ali or Robinson but very shifty whilst staying in punching range. I used to like Orlando Canizales for a similar style.

tony was a better boxer than floyd understood distance and angles..another fighter who fights similar to tony canzoneri is the great charley burley,you know the guy who is so good he was ducked by sugar ray robinson .
@samtotheg8 жыл бұрын
samtotheg in fact if you watch the charley burley video ..you can see principles tony canzoneri is executing here ..(the putting the head on the false line of attack and then gaining the initiative!
@TainoMantis8 жыл бұрын
+samtotheg Yes sir. Tony and the other top "Golden Age" boxers knew techniques that are now considered 'lost'. Besides using the little half step back (a defensive move to exploit an opponent's missed punch), Tony actually used to throw and miss punches ON PURPOSE. All of this to see if you would counter to an open area that he wanted you to counter. He would then counter your counter. This is high level stuff built upon the usual outside slips, inside slips, ducks, weaves, head feints, arm feints, level changes, side steps, and changes of rhythm.
@samtotheg8 жыл бұрын
yes yes yes taino you know yer shit ..duran was pretty good at countering the counter too ..especially the right hand (floyds pull counter would get countered)
