My Uncle who was downs syndrome, would stop what ever he was doing, where ever he was, without exception and roll up his sleeves and dance his heart out whenever this song came on without fail for 40years. Epic. R.I.P Uncle Eddie

Hi Terry, Great you should mention New Zealand. When I was in Motueka (1972), every Friday night at the 'Fountain Court' in the Post Office Hotel, the resident band, The Impressions, would play this one. It was a real crowd pleaser. Thanks for the memory. Cheers,

This is from a December '71 Top Of The Pops... long junked by the BBC but saved by German TV company ZDF, they used to license some TOTP performances on their 'Disco' programme, hence the mute appearance of Jimmy Saville briefly at the beginning, and the cut to the German audience dancing around TV screens.

Best voice in the genre, along with Tom Jones and Tony Bennett. (Of course hard to compare to the Blues/Soul greats like Otis Redding.) My mom had a Best Of album when I was little, and I played it so often I eventually knew it by heart despite not speaking a word of English.

Tony Christie is God... 16 April 1972 ... I'm eight years old and returning to Waterford on a coach from Cork after Waterford had nicked three goals in the last twelve minutes to beat Cork Hibs 3-2 and thereby snatch the League of Ireland title from the Corkmen in front of 26,000 people. My uncle Fran brought me with him on the day. I don't know how many times the lads on the coach sang Amarillo on the way back. Tony Christie is God.
