Tony Cragg is one of Britain's leading sculptors. Born in Liverpool in 1949, Tony's love of the natural world as a child was the catalyst for a lifelong fascination with material and form.
In this film he talks through the process of creating some of his most recent work, introducing us to the team who help him to realise his unique vision for structure and form.
Now based in Wuppertal Germany, in 2008 he opened the 'Skulpturenpark Waldfrieden'. Open to the public, the sculpture park houses a steadily growing and changing collection of sculpture by internationally known artists as well as featuring some of his own work.

Absolutely Amazing! Artist, architect, genius. His work just touches the soul, like meditation. Fluid sculpture that makes one want to touch it and be a part of it. Music for the eyes.

I doubt the public have any clue of this man's influence on not just display notions in fine art, but in high end retail as well. After the NYC art galleries left Soho for Chelsea in the '90s, the high end clothing boutiques that moved into those Soho spaces made a fetish of borrowing Tony Cragg display ideas ("our pricey clothes=Art"), and it continues today.

Silhouetters So he makes all the decisions on how to make craft something or just the design? Because if it's just the design then he certainly isn't "making all the decisions". It's an easy cop out for modern artists because the truth is, mastering a craft is much more difficult and time consuming then thinking a thought. Which tool to use, sanding method, finishing method, structural integrity, etc. Sometimes the first question when looking at a sculpture is, "how did he/she make that?". If you want to be a respected artist you have to both design and create. If not, when you are compared with the greatest artists of all time, you will always fall short. Would the David still be the David if Michelangelo had twenty guys make it in a few months vs himself over 3 years?

A filmmaker should man the camera, create wardrobe, write the music, create the lighting etc etc themselves right?

The artist is the progenitor of the idea, but I think it’s quite egotistical to claim credit for something that others helped create. Unfortunately this seems to be the prevailing attitude, a lack of humility.

I don't want to be a dick but shouldn't he be doing the work? He's not a general contractor.

Then is it really art? What is art then? He just draws what he wants then someone else does it for him. How can he claim it as his own? An artist to me is someone who follows through with their art start to finish. I do like where he’s coming from, making forms that are in tune with the natural earth and forms, but I can’t help but feel disappointed when I see a team of people sculpting those beautiful forms for him. The artist and the finished artwork are too detached for me to fully believe in him as an artist.

If he makes everything himself he'll make 2 sculpture per year, like me. If he has a team he makes 20 items a year. Each work creates the next and work is pumping. The art he does is better than many so it's a good thing that the world gets more of his work to see.
