Hollywood actor, Tony Curtis is interviewed on The Late Late Show with Tom Snyder. This also features the cold opening intro by Tom Snyder on this January 6, 1998 show.
TONY CURTIS (1925 - 2010) Tony Curtis was an American actor whose career spanned six decades, achieving the height of his popularity in the 1950s and early 1960s. He acted in more than 100 films in roles covering a wide range of genres, from light comedy to serious drama. In his later years, Curtis made numerous television appearances. Although his early film roles mainly took advantage of his good looks, by the latter half of the 1950s he had demonstrated range and depth in numerous dramatic and comedy roles. In his earliest parts he acted in a string of mediocre films, including swashbucklers, westerns, light comedies, sports films and a musical. However, by the time he starred in Houdini (1953) with his wife Janet Leigh, "his first clear success," notes critic David Thomson, his acting had progressed immensely.
He achieved his first serious recognition as a dramatic actor in Sweet Smell of Success (1957) with co-star Burt Lancaster. The following year he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor in The Defiant Ones (1958) alongside Sidney Poitier (who was also nominated in the same category). Curtis then gave what could arguably be called his best performance: three interrelated roles in the comedy Some Like It Hot (1959). Thomson called it an "outrageous film," and an American Film Institute survey voted it the funniest American film ever made.[3] The film co-starred Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe, and was directed by Billy Wilder. That was followed by Blake Edwards's Operation Petticoat (1959) with Cary Grant. They were both frantic comedies, and displayed his impeccable comic timing.[4] He often collaborated with Edwards on later films. In 1960, Curtis played a supporting role in Spartacus, which became another major hit for him.
His stardom and film career declined considerably after 1960. His most significant dramatic part came in 1968 when he starred in the true-life drama The Boston Strangler, which some consider his last major film role.[4] The part reinforced his reputation as a serious actor with his chilling portrayal of serial killer Albert DeSalvo. Curtis also took on the role of the Ukrainian Cossack Andrei in the historical action romance epic Taras Bulba in which the lead character was played by Yul Bryner in 1962. He later starred alongside Roger Moore in the ITC TV series The Persuaders!, with Curtis playing American millionaire Danny Wilde. The series ran twenty-four episodes.
Curtis is the father of actresses Kelly Curtis and Jamie Lee Curtis by his first wife, actress Janet Leigh.
Tom Snyder (1936-2007) was an American television personality, news anchor, and radio personality best known for his late night talk shows Tomorrow, on the NBC television network in the 1970s and 1980s, and The Late Late Show, on the CBS Television Network in the 1990s. 'Tom Snyder was a pioneering figure in broadcast journalism who brought a no non-sense attitude to broadcast television news. Loved by millions, respected by peers, and resisted by the executives for speaking his mind.'

Some of us sat on the steps of our posh Westchester patios LOL! Actually this is something to which I myself have taken exception. When Dad sold 57th Street we moved around and landed in Bayside ( he by then had got viral pneumonia). We lived in a Garden Apartment (loose term for lower middle class accommodation) The women (Jewish, Italian, Irish) used to `sit on the stoop`. Even as a young girl I who had no real frame of reference was contemptuous.

It's always been unfortunate that throughout his endless career, so much attention has been focused on his remarkable good looks, because, as a result, he has never gotten credit for being the truly great film actor he is.

true , but The Defiant Ones was incredible and he used a prosthetic nose. Tony loved the attention and made full use of his good looks. What a character!

Tony Curtis would have been great in a Hitchcock film. Im not sure if he ever did a Pink Panther film. Im still checking on that. My other favourite Tony Curtis film is Spartacus. Tony Curtis did another ancient history epic with Kirk Douglas (The Vikings) playing brothers, which I thought was silly casting. Janet Leigh-Mrs. Tony Curtis-also appears in the film.
