And that's the reason they won the Superbowl that year and then never won with Gruden after that. He had a good solid playoff run but it was Dungy's defense that won those games. He just looked like a genius because in that Superbowl he was facing a quarterback he developed running, a playbook that he created, coaching gainst the offensive coordinator he hired. Nobody could have lost with the hand Gruden was dealt that year.

Mark Jackson is a poor comparison and has yet to achieve greatness as a head coach. Rick Carlisle is an accurate instance of Tony Dungy. He took the Pistons from no playoffs to the second round then the conference finals. He was let go for a coach the franchise preferred even though he had improved (Jackson had not, 2round then 1st exit). Pistons win the title that same year, just like Bucs but Carlisle had not regressed as a coach. Has another opportunity and wins in Dallas. Rick and Tony weren't the issue. They just didn't fit the timeline of the franchises.

@Robb Dark Not good enough. The formations, down and distance habits by the coaching staff, QB tendencies and tells etc. There was too much ingrained. That was a perfect storm to have to play against last years head coach in the Super Bowl, for the Raiders, with the best if not one of the best defenses. That was essentially a gift wrapped Super Bowl. The Bucs never came close under Gruden again. Good coach anyway but fortuitous timing.

Dungy was close, but failed. He has a number of chances to boost the offense enough and couldn’t get it done. I have no confidence he would have eventually won a SB. His defense was great the first year for Gruden but was getting old. The core of that defense was gone within a few seasons. Dungy missed his window of opportunity. I will say, though, I think had Dilfer not broken his collarbone the 1999 team might have won a SB.

People act like gruden had no part in winning that Super Bowl. Dungy couldn’t get the offense to work. Gruden came in and ramped up the offense and got them over the top and let’s not ignore the fact that gruden beat the team HE built in the Super Bowl. The reason they didn’t do well afterwards is because the team got old and had to rebuild.

I was a big fan of those Colts teams. There were about 5 - 6 seasons that they were CLEARLY the best team in the league but didn't win the hardware. I say Dungy should have 3 SBs, one in Tampa and 2 in Indy. That would be an accurate representation of his impact, IMO.

He tried getting Dungy to play the race card. Dungy ain’t biting. Tony probably should’ve gotten a job a lot earlier, yes. A lot of coaches go through what Tony went through...waiting and expecting a phone call that never comes. Except if you’re a coaches son, you just get grandfathered in. Usually, you work for your dad and then branch out and work for his buddies. Football is scandalous for this. It’s the buddy system over there.

Here is the difference in Jackson and Dungy, character. Jackson had character issues so deep the organization couldn't keep him in that role. Dungy is the pure definition of a high character person/man/leader and leader of men. Go back and look it up of why Jackson was let go, not trying to spread hate here just stating the facts. Here is a quote from the team owner "Part of was he couldn't get along with anyone else in the organization" Jacob said " and look he did a great in many ways, I always compliment him for that, but you can't have 200 people in the organization not like you. " You can easily look up what was also happening in personal life at the time as well. Again no hate just facts so IMO these two situation are not similar of why someone was let go.

Jim Mora didn't build the Colts...Peyton Manning did! Outside of the super fun 1995 outlier season (when the Colts nearly beat the Steelers in the AFC Title Game), the Colts were mostly garbage before Manning arrived. And unlike Dungy (who DID win playoff games with the Bucs), Jim Mora's teams were AWFUL in the playoffs. Dungy's defense is honestly what put the Colts over the hump.

@@tigmo55 Oh ok so Peyton quarterbacked AND coached the team? You're full of 💩. Not even Tom Brady can quarterback AND coach a team. @tigmo55
@tigmo55 2 жыл бұрын
@@im7700 The Colts only made a couple of playoff appearances before Dungy arrived because Peyton had just completed his third season in the league. He was still (relatively) wet behind the ears. But tell me that the Colts maintain any semblance of relevance if they don't have Peyton Manning. Yes I agree with you that defense wins championships but that's IF the team has at least a good offense as well (the '77 Falcons are a tragic story about a team with an otherworldly defense...maybe the best one EVER...but an AWFUL offense that kept them from even making the playoffs). You need both to succeed. Not trying to downplay what Jim Mora did (I loved his postgame conferences for sure.) but I feel that Dungy left the Bucs in much better shape than Mora left the Colts.
