Black Sabbath's 'Born Again' was the 1st big stadium show I had ever seen. For a kid deeply into rock and metal in the early 1980's, it blew my fucking mind. When that little demon baby came out, with the glowing eyes clawing at the crowd! I can still remember feeling my shirt moving from the sound of Geezer's bass. Incredible memory and thanks for the release of this vid.

@@TheTapesArchive In the years since, I've looked and never found it, but I believe it was during the opening/1st couple songs (Stonehenge/Disturbing the Priest). I do remember 2 hooded priests bathed in fog came out right after and opened the center stone henge monolith to reveal a cross of spotlights that blasted the audience (as you can see in most videos), but being a 14yo kid and the camera restrictions back then, pre-vhs(?), etc. A friend still has the tour book but you can find those online. I so wish I could help! fwiw, Quiet Riot opened and it was Rudy Sarzo's birthday and they hit him in the face with a pie during the set. This was at University of Chicago (UIC Pavillion), 1983. I will tell Huckle you like his most intimate moment. THANK YOU for your content. It takes me back and puts a smile on my face. Keep it up!!

I've always preferred the deeper tracks of Sabbath which is why I have always liked this album. Imo it was the last "evil" type of Sabbath record. I'm more of a 70's Sabbath fan but Born Again was so unique in its own way it always stood out to me. Every Sabbath album has it's own sound. My favorites have been Vol-4 and Sabotage for decades. People who think the band's best output are songs like Paranoid and Iron Man that the radio has overplayed to no end are really missing out. In the last 20 years Sabbath have finally got their just due but for the longest time even a lot of those great records made with Ozzy (besides Paranoid) flew under the radar. It's like if the mainstream only played the same 3 songs off Zeppelin 2 and ignored the rest of their discography, that's what basically happened with Sabbath and it's criminal.

I was fortunate to see Black Sabbath back then. It was one of a kind show, and was one of the best shows I've ever seen. It competes with Judas Priest when I saw them during the DOF tour, and it also competes with another Black Sabbath tour, and then another Black Sabbath tour, lol. Yes, I've been to over 100 concerts, but, relatively speaking, there's a short list of the best.

Born Again is a fantastic record. I remember reading the reviews and they were so bad. The one I read the person was saying he loved Vol 4, but later people told me it's a great record and it really is. Just love it. Always felt the production was not really what it could have been, but still is great.

The played inside of a molasses vat thrown in the bottom of a swamp, recorded on a Fisher Price microphone run thru a Marshall stack with a slashed cone and a half broken Sears distortion pedal with sketchy wires while consumption of literal mountains of Peruvian marching powder was under way is the sound that a lot of people didnt like about this lp. This however is EXACTLY the reason I love it so dearly. Gillan screaming and screeching his unhinged whirlpool of deliciously tongue in cheeky evil lyrics is the other. You dont even really have to be a Sabbath or Purple fan to love Born Again. Sheer transcendant brilliance.

I think Born Again was a great album but I am biased, Ian Gillan is one of my favorite singers. Tony says he didn't understand why Ozzy released the Speak of the devil album because he'd had his own songs. Ozzy released it because he was under contract and didn't want to release what would become the Ozzy/Randy tribute album. Ozzy said it was too early at that time and didn't want to exploit Randy basically as a commodity. RIP Randy... Rock on Master Tony.

The guitar solo on The Fallen a Born Again outtake has got to be one of Tony's best totally raw fast extreme piercing sonic madness. Innovator! Btw almost lost my V card listening to this album to a ridiculously sexy acid dealer named Jackie she was in a pair of daisy duke cutoffs and a tube top and had me dosed to the gills but unfortunately I was too tripped out to get it together...no regrets though I will always love you wacky Jackie. I remember the day Born Again came out. i was in the 12th grade. I think it cane out in 83, because we saw them in early 84 at long beach arena from excellent riser seats about 10 rows back from the stage. On Iommi’s side I was let diwn when they did not perform TRASHED, which was the first song on the album, if I recall. They had a Stonehenge stage set up that was cool, even if it was a little bit cheesy. With Dio in 82 at the Forum, they were one of THE loudest bands i had seen (a record they hold to this day.. they were in the top 3 loudest bands I have seen). With Ian Gillian they were not quite as loud and they seemed to have a grungier sound. Trashy, in a sense, which I figured to be their new sound with this lineup. Apparently I liked that lineup better than the average Sabbath historian, as i noticed lots of criticism over the years since that tour. Why they didnt perform “Trashed” is beyond me. It was a jammin’ tune and could have been a hit in many tours to come. Or at least thats how I felt about it. It definitely wasnt their best work, but it WAS interesting. The album, i mean. I saw them with Dio again in 92 and finally again on August 11th, 2009 at The Greek, Row R , orchestra ( got those seats at noon the day of the show from the Greek box office by phone-yaaaaaay! Again, on Iommi’s side, right in front of him. And again, they were louder than hell. They were quite good, too. Dio died 5 months later. Was so glad we got to see them again before he died.

The Heaviest Metal ( by 1980s standards) were definitely Mob Rules, and Born Again. Some people think Dehumanizer is the Heaviest. It's the swampiest but nothing is as Heavy as Sign of the Southern Cross, and Disturbing the Priest. There is more to being Heavy than down tuning the guitars

of course Iommi mentions Dio was working on his solo album while he was in sabbath, that is false because Dio on started his solo album after he left sabbath, warner gave Dio a record contract with the success of heaven and hell but he was not going to use it while the band was active, Warner themselves even forgot they gave Dio a record contract. but Holy Diver and Don't talk to strangers were intended for Sabbath's next studio album with Dio. Dio having wrote these himself.

Too much screaming by Gillian, the guitar was muddled. I missed the earlier Dio years and last saw Sabbath in ‘78 in Philly… I am glad I saw Fastway and Quiet Riot.

Iommi's thought process around what Deep Purple song to cover is so broken. Do the most known song? NO. You do Highway Star. It's the one of the most metal songs they do and way more appreciated by DP fans than Smoke on the Water.
@streamofconsciousness5826
@streamofconsciousness5826 Жыл бұрын
I think his main concern was which one could he play, i watched the encore where they do the Purple stuff at the Montreal gig (here on uTube), and he does not play it right, and the lead does not even start on the same note or have any phrasing or melodies from the original. I stopped it half way through it was such a mess. I was disappointed but have learned since then that none of these guys can play other peoples stuff. That's not the kind of Guitar Players they are, they have been jamming and writing their whole lives, not sitting in a bed room learning Randy and Yngwie. Any covers they learned (Buddy Holly, the Beatles, Elvis) were not even close to what they ended up doing. The only one from that era I have seen do a cover note for note is Alex Lifeson playing a Zeppelin Song for a charity event, he NAILED it. Look up Andy Kim and Alex Lifeson. you should be able to find it of you are interested. And his Lerxst Amp creates a sound just like the song as well. That also surprised me.

This interview made me cringe and I understand why musicians get agitated by them . The interviewer clearly hadn’t done his research properly, asking how the tour was going when they weren’t currently on tour , and asking nonsense like why are you playing Smoke on the Water ? Heaven forbid.

These are the years that Iommi was having his interviews done by a friend that have similat tone to his voice. As he was often too coked up and never care less about fame and exposure as most musicians care so much and crave s much! Nowadays how many legendary egomaniacs are interviewed by teens from their mom basement suites studio,, Not saying this is not Iommi but between 1983-1987 more than often for the little interviews he did many was his friends speaking. As there is no "live"interview,the artist always knows the questions ahead of the interviews.

@@TheTapesArchive Hi, Please understand I am not doubting your video here. I just meant that during the era of 1983-1986-7ish this happened a lot. You can read it in the Black Sabbath book from Mick Wall. He is a goofy but he is respected and accepted by the business and the musicians in general. He wrote Dio las book also if I'm right.
