I heard punch brothers version of this first from their cover of this album and it's definitely a lot different. Much more melancholy.

This is a great flat picking version of Ralph McTell's classic. Pity Tony changed the word "lonely" in the chorus to "mourning" (I think that is what he is saying) - it isn't an improvement. I love Tony but Ralph should be more well known than he is. He is a fantastic finger style player in the style of people like Blind Blake

I think it is an improvement .The " folk process' will have its way with a song over time . archaic tunes like house carpenter are not recognizable compared to modern versions .

There is a thing which occurs with some songs over time which is known as " the folk process" whereas when songs begin to be handed down by word of mouth rather than learned from the original recording and for other reasons the wording and melodies of them is often changed, from the original over time . A good example of this is the song " House Carpenter " which is also on this same album . The song was first published about 400 years ago ,was originally in the style of a broadside where it had about 50 verses , and the devil is named as the influencer of the catastrophe . The wording is almost unrecognizable to the version Tony plays on this recording , which has the story whittled down to a concise and adequate six ( or so ) verses .
