I'll never forget the time two of my buddies and I went to see the Tony Rice Unit at Gettysburg. After watching Tony's set, my one buddy turned to the other and said, "So, what did you learn after watching them?" My other buddy, without cracking a smile said "I learned that I'll never be able to play like Tony Rice." Sadly both of my buddies are gone now, and so is Tony. I really miss those days.

as a flatpicker my self, and in learning alot of Tony's stuff. He's not unhappy he's just concentrating on all them notes he's picking. I can show emotions when I play blues but not this too much concentrating

The fiddle player needs to find a group that has as much "fun"as He does.I saw Him smile at least five times. The others look like they are on the brink of a fist fight with each other..They should change their name to the " Unhappy valley boys". When musicians go out and play "just" to make a little money it's usually obvious. And the crowd doesn't have as much fun as they deserve.A Lot of good musicians hold themselves back because of "personality"quirks.Happy people make other people happy.Tony as well as his brother are good musician and probably very good people .They just never appear to be very happy. Just an observation.

Are you drunk? Little Rice smiles at every single thing every other musician does. In this particular song, big Rice isn't all chuckles, but at least four times he makes his "DAMN!" face during the violin solos, and vocally SAYS it before screaming an encouraging cheer very much along the lines of the original "DAMN!" Generally, though, Rice is clearly having a good time.

+howsziz You have made a valid observation. Ha Ha, I have followed Tony Rice since his start years ago and if you observe him during performances he NEVER smiles at all. His son smiles a lot so he must have inherited it from his mother. The standing joke about Wyatt was that Tony should have named him "White" because that what it sounds like when he introduces him on stage ( White Rice ). My wife laughs every time she hears the introductions being made. But as good as he picks and the money he has made, certainly give him the right to at least smile once in a while.
