They were both demons. Walter could have chosen not to move the way he did. Tony rather grew up in the mess. The demonic part is neither of the two stopped doing what they did until the ultimate: death. In the end they both made the decision to be ultimately selfish controllers who lost sight of everyone on there way to their own demise.

The thing I find fascinated about these characters are that they’re both complete opposite types of anti-heroes. Tony is light born in darkness, being born to a mother who had borderline personality disorder and a father who was in the mafia, with Tony witnessing violent activities. While Walter was darkness born in light, he was man not surround by anything criminal related but instead he’s bitter, has a fragile ego, for being giving a shit hand in life with giving up his position at Grey Matter and living in a financially struggling household. But in the end they both start off as anti-heroes and end up as villains, showing how strong darkness is, no matter what angle it starts off in.
@onemoreminute0543

As I saw one article put it: Breaking Bad is about a man who abandons the light for the darkness. The Sopranos is about a man who is given the opportunity to join the light, but constantly retreats back into the darkness.

I think the evolution (or lack thereof) of each character works well enough in their own right: Tony is a man who tries so, so, many times to be a good person and improve but the realities of the world and its external pressures constantly force him to regress into a monster. He's an example of determinism. Walt is a man who rebels against the world's external pressures and society's expectations of him and completely transforms by the end. He's an example of free will.

do you have any recommendations for a series like breaking bad?
@onemoreminute0543
@onemoreminute0543 2 жыл бұрын
@@tranqilo397 I don't know of anything else EXACTLY like it, but obviously the Sopranos is a good recommendation as Vince Gilligan was heavily inspired by it. Some other shows which have anti-heroes like Walter White would be stuff like Mad Men or Sons of Anarchy. For a pure crime show with an ensemble cast, the Wire is probably a good watch.
@tranqilo397

@@onemoreminute0543 never seen mad man, does the hero also raises and become something?
@onemoreminute0543
@onemoreminute0543 2 жыл бұрын
@@tranqilo397 There's generally an attempt by the main character Don Draper to change (though that's more to do with finding human happiness), but nowhere near as drastic as Walt in Breaking Bad. I think Walt will always be a unique character due to where he started. He wasn't born into organised crime, he's not connected to crime in any way, he wasn't in war,he wasn't part of a gang, and he didn't have a big business, and wasn't part of a dysfunctional family. Walter White was just a middle-class, high school chemistry teacher who lived in fear of taking any dangerous risks in life. It was only until his diagnosis that he was faced with his own mortality and realized 'hang on, I've achieved literally nothing in life. I had the potential for so much more. But it'll all be meaningless unless I take action now'. Another recommendation would be Peaky Blinders, where Tommy Shelby climbs the social ladder over the seasons to become not just a high criminal figure, but even a political figure. Like Walt, the threat of death completely alters his psyche and outlook on life. Barry is another recommendation, though he's more like Tony Soprano in that he constantly tries to evolve into a better person but his experiences and the world always push him back. Supposed to be pretty unique due to its dark comedy.

I don't think I can pick between the two, or between the shows for that matter. However, making character evolution the tiebreaker doesn't settle anything. Walter White is meant to evolve massively as a character, it's what Gilligan set out to create. Tony Soprano is someone written to be incapable of change, he's a sociopath and always will be. It's as conclusive as making the decider who's better at cooking meth or who's better at being Italian.

Tony is in and grew up in a world where his lifestyle is pretty much accepted by friends and family, so we got to see the details and inner workings of his business while understanding where he's coming from, whether you agree with him or not. Walt put himself in a world out of desperation where it is definitely not accepted by any of his friends or family, so we got to see how he juggled his crime life and his family life while watching him slowly turn from a nerdy quiet nice guy into an unrecognizable, selfish, and ruthless monster that we can no longer understand. The nuances in Sopranos was brilliant. The nonstop crescendo sequence of events in Breaking Bad was insane, to the point of almost anxiety inducing. These two shows are easily among the most stellar in history with some of the best writing, directing, acting, and endings.

The characters are basically polar opposites in their outlook on life: Melfi: "You don't believe human beings possess free will?" Tony: "You're born into this shit". Cancer patient: "It's as they say. God laughs at those who make plans". Walt: "Now that is such bullshit".

Yep! Walt believed that he could chose what to do with his life, after being given a death sentence. Pure free will is what he wanted Tony was too scared to ever get out of the mob despite all the stress it caused him, he loved the lifestyle and he was used to it. He thought it was his destiny and couldn’t change his road

I gotta give it to The Sopranos though for having more replay value. Breaking Bad when you watch it the first time is the most thrilling,gripping and intense thing you'll ever watch, like the watching the TV version of the dark knight. but it doesn't quite hit the same the second time, but the sopranos is the opposite. it gets better the more you watch it. there's so much depth to the soprano universe,there's more lore ,so much more ambiguity. the sopranos has more surreal and supernatural elements,religious symbolism. While breaking bad is more focused, the sopranos i feel is so much more layered and well thought out of. after watching breaking bad again it almost feels linier in comparison.

Walter started as a good man without another way to provide and thats why we kept loving him even when he became a despicable monster, as for Tony, he was a despicable monster since the beginning and David Chase made us love that terrible human being from the get go, thats why in my opinion The Sopranos is second only to the first season of True Detective, don't get me wrong, Breaking Bad is incredibly amazing, but The Sopranos is simply on another level.

@@fidboi2715 I've heard that about a lot of shows haha I'm sure it's one of the best, but best ever? ehh IDK there's a lot of great shows out there from Seinfeld to The Sopranos and beyond but I haven't heard bad things about BB so I'm sure it's on that list. I think it depends on the genre. Like right now, Cobra Kai is easily one of the top show easily because it's not woke, faithful to the source material and just damn great writing. Sopranos was like this, Seinfeld, I've heard BB has stellar writing too I just have to watch it once I get the chance. There's also some great super hero shows too which don't get enough recognition imo due to the genre but that's a different story.

I think it's the best show ever made personally, but ofc I haven't seen every show. Definitely think the first 2 rounds were wrong. Just like in the final evolution round, Tony never changed too much. He received constant attention from everyone around him yet he was cruel time and time again. Tony was a better family man than Walt but was so unbelievably selfish he made everyone's life worse and had a front row seat for it. Walt's intentions started understandably and slowly allowed his ego and power control him. However his nobility in saving Jesse in the end as well as saving his ass many times in the series makes him more rootable. On round two, the soprano crew was family, they were huge in driving Tony's actions and truly responsible for his power. The Chris/Tony relationship alone was such an essential part of the show! Dont get me wrong, BB has amazing crew characters but they're more individuals doing whats best for them. The soprano crew was a unit and army. Way more impact ful. Past that though I agree the rest!
