I hate it when people say an artist or group from 20-25 years ago is “washed up “. How long are they supposed to stay relevant especially in the music industry? 10 years,15,20,25 years? Like WTF are they even talking about. I was in the entertainment industry from 1997-2009 in Los Angeles. I actually started 10 days after Biggie was killed in LA. People have no idea about what it takes to be #1 or to go platinum. There aren’t many artists who can stay relevant for decades. Artists like Eminem,Dre,Cube,Snoop,50 and out of those artists only one has stayed relevant just because of their music and that’s Eminem. Dre went into the headphone business with Beats by Dre. Cube went into acting,writing and producing and then basketball with the Big 3. Snoop went into everything lol that he could. Same thing with 50. He got into making tv shows and the liquor industry. 2 out of the 3 hip hop billionaires didn’t make their money from music. Jay and Puff made the vast majority of their wealth from liquor and clothing companies. Same thing with Dre. He made the vast majority of his money from Beats and not by selling records. When a new artist comes out and they are the hottest thing since sliced bread they have a small window of time to capitalize on their fame. Usually it’s an about a 5 year period. Say their first album is a massive hit and goes platinum right off the rip. If that second album isn’t also a massive hit it’s going to be an uphill battle for them. When The Game dropped “The Documentary” he followed it up with “The Doctors Advocate”. The Documentary sold 3.285 million copies in the US. His follow up album sold 1.077 million albums in the US. Followed by “LAX” which didn’t break a million sales in the US with 825,000 albums sold. Is The Game “washed up “ because of that? Absolutely not. It’s incredibly difficult to be on top for a long time and to the artists that do they know that they are in a small club of artists who have managed to do that. When people discuss Jay Z and say that Jay has managed to be #1 for all these years I find that statement to be false. Jay was never the number one artist in any year that he dropped an album. 1996 Reasonable Doubt comes out. 1996 definitely belonged to Pac. 1997 belonged to Big. 1998 belonged to DMX with 2 # 1 albums in the same year. 1999 belonged to Eminem. Then it was Wayne,TI,Kanye and so on.

Do he really need to have been #1 at any of those times you mentioned if a lot of those rappers and his other piers have him at #1 or top 5? The man has music dating back as far 1986' way before all those guys. He had to build it himself (with Dame and Bigs) they put it out there and the streets made the record companies recognize him. Again, statistically, he may not have ever had the #1 SALES, but he definitely had the streets on fire while those guys were "#1."

I think that Reasonable Doubt is in the Top 10 of best hip hop albums. The “American Gangster “album is one of my favorites Jay Z albums ever. The “God Did” record would not be what it is without that Jay Z verse in my opinion. It shows you that Jay still has it. Especially when I heard the story of how it was made.
