I agree with Chaz. The Soul guy didn't even get to be a person the whole movie. That is a problem I have with animation. Can we be a person the whole movie?!?! Same with Princes and the Frog. We finally got to be a Disney princess but we can't be a person the whole movie? 😑 Can we be the main character in an animated movie and be a person the whole time? Please?

I think the problem is that because people saw a black person on the screen as the main character and because it is so rare for black people to be leads in animation, people assumed Soul would be a whole representation of black culture, but thats not what the movie was meant to be. Its really just about a dude who had a dream to make his big break. I feel like Disney or Pixar should have an animated movie which does focus deep into black culture. Soul definitely isn't and shouldn't be that movie.

Two things can be right. I agree with both Tony and Chaz. I would like to see more stories diving deeper into black culture, but I'd also like to see stories with black characters where they're just people. IMO, See You Yesterday is a movie that kinda hits on both points being duscussed, but I think it's lukewarm reception was due to it not going full on in either direction.

@hottubtony77 I totally agree. I miss the creaky chair with the saxophone music and turnaround. Maybe it’s licensed by Alldef or something. Then all the other options I don’t care for… maybe have a separate segment with a group discussion. Because atp it’s just a podcast

I'm with Chaz lol, Soul was still an alright movie but it would've made it great if there was some more blackness to it. For the majority of the movie the main character was just a cat or a spirit lol. The message was great though just wish it was executed better

I 100% disagree with Chaz. We are people first. We keep saying we want to be in stories and we are more and varied people and not only when comes to the color of our skin. If this case then why can't it just be a story and the character just be a black man, woman, or child with a story?

Disney set the precedence with Moana and Coco of delving deep in those cultures that I also expected Soul to do the same with African American culture. And it was not that at all. Oddly Pixar came out with Turning Red, that also delved into Asian culture. So they can do it for Latinos, Asians, and Hawaiins, but when it's our turn we get a generic story not specific to us and our culture?

Because their stories are generally written by them, we always get their stories. Their stories are the status quo, they don't say "hey, this is a white story." Because society has accepted their stories as "the way"

Two things. It didn't have a Pixar short preceding the movie. Toy Story 4 didn't have a short too. And, like Tony said, it didn't have the Pixar "wow factor". And I LOVED Soul and The Good Dinosaur.

It's like a Batman or Superman toy, they are popular amongst kids so those characters are made into toys. That's what happened with Buzz in Toy Story. We saw a Buzz Lightyear toy's story, not THE Buzz Lightyear's story

Cap 1 is good. It was a solid b minus movie. That could be considered mid. Things thats mid doesnt mean bad, but if the next couple of things you make are incredible then that first B- starts looking like a C- When expectations are too high, it can ruin an experience

Chaz sounds like he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about with these reviews that he's giving out of these other movies that are really not the bad movies that he says that they are. LOL all three Iron Man's were rock solid. You can't just say that a movie was trash without any legitimacy behind it. All anybody ever says about Captain America the first avenger is " the way Steve looked pre serum " stop it. That's the way he was supposed to look. I think it stayed on point with the original comic book story. All the toy stories are legit. Soul was great. And just hearing him say all of that talking crap on all those movies, I give chaz's voice two saxophones out of five. 😂🤣

I love Chaz' point, it caught me offguard too. You can apply that to so much of disney's properties, even in marvel and star wars. Black director, followed by white director. Black writer, followed by white writers. Black Panther, but one of the heroes is a CIA agent. We as a Black audience are giving too much

Waiting on Lightyear to hit Disney +. I enjoyed Soul. I concur with Tony. I didn’t want to see another historical drama/slave/crime piece. Seeing ordinary people experience extraordinary things was wonderful. Even though they fell into the POC must turn into an animal trope it was still nice to see.

SPOILER WARNING ⚠️. At the end of the movie, Buzz gets the new suit (the one we recognize). So wouldn't the Toy Story Buzz share the same compassion and maturity as the "new suit" Buzz in Lightyear?

Nope b/c this movie Buzz inspired a different iteration in the same Toy Story world. The version it inspired was the Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command & that’s what the toy Buzz is based on. It’s all confusin & unnecessary. If this movie had just stuck with the lore of that fun show & made an intriguing fun space adventure prequel film of how Buzz became a space ranger it would’ve been solid film

I hope one day you understand why one main animator in a predominantly white studio being black, in a story about a black protagonist directed (one would presume) to a black audience, would be a problem. Hell, Raya had the same problem Chaz is talking about and that's barely a year old
