That was down to the right glue above anything else, but also that heat gun. Those go together for sure when you're recovering an amp. Thanks very much for those kind words and they are appreciated make no mistake. The MT-15 was and is a very good value amp for the money it costs (in the UK just £470 I paid inc 20% tax). It has some pretty stellar tones too but it can be loud :) It's 17 watts is nonsense :) it has to be higher than that, although I have to admit that wattage can be misleading because of speaker efficiencies etc. But a really cool amp for sure. Thanks for watching.
@BazonBlades3 жыл бұрын
@@tonymckenzieofficial, I believe the 6l6 models have been tested at 25 or 26 watts. I expect my 5881 version probably outputs 22 or 23 watts. Run through an oversized 2x12 with V30's it's plenty loud to gig with. I think the MT15 bats above average and IMO is the best deal in the PRS amp line. It's not perfect but is a bunch of amp for the price.

I can tell you that the new 100 watt stack is the best amp I’ve ever played. Mark actually uses it exclusively live. Did a vip thing and he showed us the components. Not sure about this one but the big boy is legit. I’ve played through it several times but unfortunately don’t own it. I’m not aware of any major amps, excluding boutique, that don’t utilize components from either China or Taiwan. We simply don’t manufacture the volume of chips here for these products. I don’t have a problem with products assembled in America or even I China, what you need to determine is if they are actually operating their own factory or not. That is the key factor. Guitar makers are all moving to pushing international production. They simply don’t make enough money off products in America. fenders Mexican strats are absolutely amazing for example.
@tonymckenzieofficial9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the info. The MT-15 is a very good amp particularly when you look at the cost. It might have increased now. On the components, there are also lots in Malaysia and Philippines being made, but China and Taiwan of course also. My choice would be Taiwan as I had a history of trading with Taiwan and always found their gear worthy of a level of quality. I agree with you re Western Management is the real key. When I was working with Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan, always the western management got things right, whereas often the eastern management lacked somewhat. It might be different now of course. It's true that making amps etc. in the USA (or UK for that matter) makes things more expensive, and sometimes (I hate to say this) the quality is inferior to that from the Far east... sometimes... There are some very good makers out there in the west making amps and Mezzabarba for example is one of them. Incredibly well made, but it costs more to do it. Looking at Marshall also tells a tale really, because they do have Far east manufacturing but getting past the 'simulators' for any company I am sure is going to get tougher and tougher and ultimately we'll all be able to make simulations of our simulators ;-) Thanks for the great post and for watching.

Hi and thanks for the kind words about my reviews. A great review comes from great gear, and if a review is not that great, its often because of the gear being lacklustre. Great job sir! I’ve owned this amp since they first came out. Use it to gig every weekend doing rock covers...Never an issue. I play it through a Matrix from ported 1x12 with a V30. Plenty loud enough. Amp has a great clean channel that any pedal I’ve put through it so far sounds great. Amp also has a great effects loop. I run a TC mini reverb and flashback delay along with a volume pedal,all through the loop. Price,Big iron and big power tubes in a small package make this amp one of the best values out there imo. The voicing on it may be too tight or modern for some. I like EL34 modded Marshall with some sag and this amp isn’t that but it is compact make portability a breeze and it’s separate eq,great clean channel tons of gain and bottom end make it a winner. Great review and killer chops sir Thank you

But with this amp those costs are not there. Its great to hear what you find with this amp too, all user comments are great and they help many guys for sure especially with a newer amp like this one where there might be apprehension (like I had) about PRS amps. Hey there, love the videos, very informative! There are two versions of this amp the 5881 (later) and 6L6 (earlier). In this amp, do you know if these tubes would they be directly interchangeable without modification of anything other than the bias?
@tonymckenzieofficial2 ай бұрын
From what I understand there are differences re the amp. The tubes 'can' be different depending on where made etc. 6L6 is 23w dissipation and 5881 can be 18w or so. I also heard about transformer damage on some gear but its just hearsay. Personally, can you hear the difference? Maybe, but I would be careful if the 6L6 are in there from the factory and you fit the 5881's. Fitting 6L6 from 5881's might be safer. But I'm not an expert on flipping these two tubes over. Just be careful. Screw the OP transformer and probably not worth fixing at the cost of these amps today. Good question and I'm sure others could answer this maybe better. Thanks for watching - I liked this amp.

Thank you for a thorough review. After a lot of "lunch box" demos, including the Boogie mark 5:25, this amp jumped out as a super value all things considered. I have a 10-day trial period and have one gig of real-world use so far. I like single-channel amps, but with the clean channel boosted, and the gain channel on very low gain (still plenty for 70's crunch), the amp is pretty seamless between both channels. A couple rehearsals will be the final test this week. I'd like to know what your special qualifications are as an amp reviewer.
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the post and your opinion on this amp... very useful for all. Special qualifications... hmmm. well how does using tube amps since 1971 grab you? how does owning and using well over 20 tube amps currently improve my knowledge of them? and how does watching all those horrible sales videos from music sellers and sometimes makers that never tell you the truth about their product work? I have had lots of experience with most gear including the amp sims, tube amps, effects pedals, effects rack gear, many guitars (I currently own about 23) and in the day job since about 1981 I have had experience in software, hardware, sales, support and other stuff that is NOT music related. But I could say that my experience overall is generally greater than many others. :) I won't extend the other things I have experienced from my real job but the skills are somewhat extensive. Good question... and btw I have been reviewing on video since about 2009 with a website that goes back to about 1998 all music gear related.. check the website some time at: tonymckenzie.com

THX for that great and honest review. I happen to own MT15 and it is really great sounding amp. Swapping output tranny and few components can make it 55 W. There is a vid on YT with the designer of this little monster. Regarding Mark Tremonti part: Mark said that he had used this amp exclusively on the latest album of Alter Bridge. Cheers.

Great to hear you have one of these. I'll have to dig around a bit on any mods but seemed like they could be done. Yes I saw where Mark did say that he used it throughout an album. I would not say that he is not telling the truth or anything like that, but remember that was a sales video and you could guess that they certainly want to show the amp in the best 'light' they can. But there's no doubt its a very good amp especially for the money and there was very little that I did not like on it. How about you? Anything you would change? Or like to see updated? Remember that owner comments go a very long way and I'm sure yours will help. Thanks...

Yes the master is far away for sure and strange. But I think the loop switching would probably be the biggest thing. Also maybe a little more drive on the clean channel when we pull the treble boost out. Ha you can't have the effects too! :) Thanks for the info about the stereo and the results you got from that... Hi Tony . Can I run this without a speaker connected ? for silent recording I go from the output to my audio interface or should I use the fx send ?
@tonymckenzieofficial2 жыл бұрын
No. You will need some form of output load for the speaker (at the least). I used a Mesa Cab Clone but that tone was not great with that device. With that device or maybe a Tornado then you can have silent recording but don't just run the amp with no load and absolutely don't just plug the output in to your audio interface... be careful. If you have the right load device they often include a way to record the amps output and things like the Tornado can include IR's that can enhance the tone going to record. The Cab Clone has speaker emulator in it but to be honest I tend to use that as a dummy load these days when repairing an amp. Good question - and there are unfortunately many answers depending on the gear you want to use to achieve the result. I did review the Two- Notes product here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4bcgq2DptN5hq8 hope it helps...

I primarily play blues and classic rock-type but do a few high gain metal tunes. Moving up from a from a Fender Hot Rod deluxe. Love that Fender clean tone but could never get enough dirt when I wanted it without pedals. I shopped for almost 1 year for a 15-20w head. Played Marshall, Orange, Mesa Boogie, Friedman, etc. Was leaning towards at HK 20w tubemeister for the price range. This is the review that caused me to push the purchase button on this amp. Paired with a $250 (laugh already) Harley Benton 2*12 cab w/ Celestion Vintage 30s. I've got $900 in the amp rig. I've got friends with $2500+ rigs that snickered at first and then dropped their jaw. Thanks Tony a great review. Keep them coming. I'm really curious about this amp. And also the prospect of converting it to 50watts.
@tonymckenzieofficial6 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure about a conversion to 50w because of the OT and that low 305 volts seemed low to me - I'm not completely expert on design, but seemed lower than most of the stuff I checked. The Ceriatone 50 I made had higher voltages than that. Great amp though.... and thanks.
@glitterkittensreid50795 жыл бұрын
There is a video mentioned in the comments section here where the designer of the amp said he could convert the amp pretty easily by swapping out the transformers to the higher plate voltages to 55 Watts. 6L6GC amps usually put out 19-30 Watts each valve.

@@glitterkittensreid5079 Indeed I saw that video too... but I don't have any info on that one. If you do find anything then do come back and post it here... it could be useful for sure. Those HT voltages did seem rather low on the amp as it showed on the PT. Thanks.

Question - why don't you like the JJ power tubes? I have an older MT15 with Ruby tubes like the one in this video. I'm considering replacements and discovered that the Ruby tubes are no longer available and new MT15's are shipped with JJ 5881 power tubes. I know there are many options, but the small bottle design does limit things somewhat. I think full size 6L6 would fit, but the glass would be very close to the cage. I think the Ruby tubes are 6L6 spec in a small bottle, instead of the 5881 which I believe has a slightly different spec.
@tonymckenzieofficial3 жыл бұрын
Well the story is simple... JJ tubes nearly cost me Diezel Hagen amp. They came in it from new and one lit up like a light bulb. I never had any other tube cause those sort of problems and I tend to steer clearer of stuff that has given me aggro in one way or another. Best advice? WHATEVER tubes you buy always buy selected premium and matched sets from someone that you can really trust. I have bought so called 'matched' sets on a number of occasions from les than honest suppliers where the tubes were actually not matched properly. Best supplier I have found is tubeampdoctor.com. They charge for the premium selected stuff - but you know what I have never had a single issue with any of those and they are always matched extremely well. For me that is good value. The 5881 I think are a bit different than the 6L6 and I could be wrong on this but the JJ have some 'versions' that can change things also a little. Thanks for watching.
@martinadams79795 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony .. great review thank you, I already have this amp and agree with your comments. Recently I decided to swop the V1 preamp tube for a JJ 12AY7 and the reduction in gain made the lead channel more usable for classic rock, heavy rock and still metal genres. Also it allowed you to clean up the lead channel with the guitar volume knob better. I asked PRS tech support and they agreed that either a 5751 or 12AY7 in V1 would drop the gain. I use mine in a rock covers band and it’s very good.
@tonymckenzieofficial5 жыл бұрын
Very good comment Martin. The amp does have huge gain and I'm sure that what you said does work as those tubes are interchangeable... now why didn't I come up wit that!... I love comments from owners of the gear and yours is absolutely right up there with the best posts. Thanks.

Tony, thanks for the great review. It was nice to see the inside. On the subject of power tubes, what would you recommend for replacements?
@tonymckenzieofficial5 жыл бұрын
I tend to opt for Tube Amp Doctor and for one reason only. TAD tubes are tested and tested and then tested again. I have bought TAD tubes for some years and never had the slightest problem with a single tube. Worst for me are JJ where reliability and failures if not tested well (many sell them but few test them well) and they that can zap an amp really quickly. So the TAD stuff is good but it is expensive - probably because of the tubes that fail their testing regime. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info... and for watching. I did see the info before I made the video (but not about the live bit) but I tend to try and ignore it all because 'some' musicians actually lie. I'm not actually inferring that Mark did BTW but just in general I think that way I am less biased by the comments out there from endorsers. Good point and thanks for the 'live' info.
@hitman82pl5 жыл бұрын
@@tonymckenzieofficial I really enjoyed watching your vid, especially the part about PRS distributor :) I got the impression that you know a lot about electronics and how amps are built, so that was an awesome insight which I didn't get anywhere else. I agree that musicians often lie about their endorsement deals but Mark was always open about his rig, I've heard him say in one of the interviews that MT 15 is 'his tone' but it's just not powerful enough for a stadium or a larger venue. He also mentioned that he would use a 100 watts version and hopefully PRS will release it.
@tonymckenzieofficial5 жыл бұрын
I met the distributor again at a show and he (and I) had views that were the same... we agreed to forget that incident and just move on. In fact he was very courteous as indeed I was. So that's the end of that issue and I am much happier with it that way. I'm not generally a type of person that 'does not get on' with others. In any case, I later bought another PRS guitar :) Other reviews in general are either sales reviews or they are purely from players that play but don't really review anything. I got fed up of that so started to make my own as truthfully as I possibly could. It's one reason that I buy everything. On over 99% of all reviews I bought the gear to review just like anyone else. MT did say that he recorded an album with it I know. But in general while I might be 'tarring' everyone the same, I try and disregard everything I see on promotional videos - and that was from a promotional video. He might well be saying the way it is... or not! In any case, it's no reflection on MT at all, but rather a way that I try and exclude things that 'could' be added for the purpose of sales. This amp as supplied IS loud and with a 4x12 cab you would not use it flat out :) Thankfully there's a master on there.

While tone in an amp is very subjective, Mesa Boogie are undeniably better amps in terms of build quality. Don't get me wrong, the MT15 is quite well built and as I saw in your video, the PCB's are very good quality, but Mesa Boogies are built like a tank. I mean, I hear they whack them with a hammer to test if they're durable enough.

The MT15 is a pretty cool amp and can sound very good. hi, i want to change the channel by an external footswitch (i got an electro harmonix super switcher) but when i plug in the cable the amp makes a very loud hum, specially in the lead channel. Do you have any idea about this problem? thanks.

if your pedal switcher is on the same mains... then choose a different outlet for that.... hope it helps.

Have you or anyone had issues with noise with this amp? I had 2 and loved the tone, but if I had ANYTHING plugged into the FX Loop there was a ridiculous amt of noise/low end hum that made them both unusable.
@tonymckenzieofficial4 жыл бұрын
You are the second guy to mention that. Seems OK for me re the loop, but I don't overly use the loop myself. The amp itself sounds massive, it has noise of course on the drive channel but it would with this amount of gain. Thanks for the info Jon and stay safe.

Question, did you have any issues with the effects loop? Meaning a noticeable hiss once you plugged any effect into the loop? I own one and mine and don't think like noticed this until recently. I have a MXR carbon copy that's extremely noisy in MT 15 loop. The hiss becomes louder without even playing anything if l turn the mix knob up on the pedal.

Some guys have said that the loop is a little 'off' so to speak. I did not really have any issue with it... but an interesting point for sure. Does anyone else have noise issues on the loop? Post here if you do and I could return to take another look I still have the amp. Stay safe.

@@tonymckenzieofficial My MT15 is from the first batch and I have never experienced any of the issues that people said that they have with theirs. My FX loop is actually very quite. In the loop I have a Digitech Polaris, Digitech Obscura, and a cheap Mooer 6-band eq. In the front end of the amp I have a Wampler Tumnus Deluxe and that thing can get pretty squirrelly on me (I’m new to overdrive pedals though). All daisy chained from a One-Spot wall wart. Other than the Wampler being cranked and really pushing the tubes into terrible nonsense, I haven’t had any noise issues with my MT15. I was going to suggest a mains/ground issue but I’ve seen videos of people in well equipped studios having noise issues too so I don’t know. Probably down to inconsistent components in the early batches that was blanketed by excellent marketing and brand recognition. Regardless, the MT15 is certainly a well rounded beast of a lunchbox head!

Love that backing track. And you can damn well shred!! I also love my MT15. Compliments my MESA Stiletto Duece nicely but the cleans on the MT15 are far better. Thanks for the review.

Hi Robert, this MT-15 is a very good amp for metal etc. and offers a lot for a little. Thanks for your opinion on the MT-15 (and even the Stiletto) and it matters because you own one! I still have mine too :) thanks Rob... stay safe
