floex831 what kind of work do you do? Last fall, I worked on a large network TV show that was filmed in the wilderness, including the literal wettest location within the US, the desert, tge swamp, Alaskan forest, and Alaskan glaciers. The main cameras were Sony FS7, and the style shots and timelapses were shot on A7Sii and A7Rii. Locations that required significant treks in and every weather type you can imagine, and not one camera body failure in any of those extended conditions.

LOL, everyone's been saying everything is the end of Canon and Nikon. Please. While they may be slow as hell, one release isn't going to be the sudden death of either of those two companies. Sure, if they don't adjust to the market they'll eventually fail, but let's not pretend for a second that they're going to suddenly hit a wall and go bankrupt tomorrow. Also Sony's pro-level customer service is laughably bad; if you want to see how it's done check out Canon's pro service. They will literally get a replacement lens out to you in the middle of the Sahara within a day.

Any chance you had a chance to test its durability or your opinion on how well the a9 will hold up for sports shooters abuse. My d5 has been through many tough times and still work well, will the a9 be able to do the same. Can it handle a drop, rain and not freeze up or shut down? I've dropped my d5 from a 8-9ft tower into mud/dirt/pebbles at a PGA event and the camera kept working, circ pol filter was garbage but camera worked no issues. It's shot through down pours at events will the a9 live? Amazing tech, love the quite shutter without distortion if that works well, just wondering if it can handle daily use. Thanks

This looks pretty good, i recently sold my A7 II and bought a 5D IV. I switched from a 5D III to the A7 II, really liked the Sensor and IBIS but the lack of a Joystick, and the poor Battery performance was a nogo for me, i could live with a single Memory Card by purchasing high quality Cards and just use a bunch of 16GB Cards for a Wedding instead of 128GB, if one really dies there would be enough pictures left on the other cards. The a9 looks way better now, but i really love my Canon lenses and the Handling of a Canon DSLR, anyway thinking about purchasing an a9 as a second/backup Camera. But the Batterylive on paper is still bad even if it is upped by 2,2x i mean, 20FPS and 480 Frames per Battery, that does result in 24 Sec continuous shooting with one Battery.... On my 5D III and 5D IV i get 800-1000 Pictures per Battery, of cause with the Back LCD turned off, reviewing pictures sometimes but Automatic review is turned off. So, still not the Battery life i would love to see but it looks acceptable now.

I don't have an issue with the price, it's a hell of a camera, but Sony's telephoto lenses are so overpriced it's comical. 7 and a half grand for a 300mm f/2.8, 13 grand for a 500mm f/4. Good luck trying to get Nikon and Canon shooters to switch over to that.

That's just blatantly false. Canon's 300 f/2.8 is $1,500 cheaper, Nikon's is $2,000 cheaper. So, yes, they are overpriced. The 500mm f/4 is several grand more than Canon's and a few grand over Nikon's.

Tony and Chelsea - first, thanks so much for the all your videos and your hard work! Keep it up. I've been trying to find an answer to this online but have not gotten a straight answer. When shooting in 20fps continuous, does the A9 drop to 12-bit compressed RAW? Canon and Nikon shoot at 12fps lossless 14-bit RAW. All previous Sony mirrorless cameras like the A7rII shoot in 12-bit compressed when in continuous mode. Also, shooting with an electronic shutter introduces chroma noise and reduced dynamic range in their previous offerings (like the A7rII and A7s, which I both own). Do you know or did anyone ask if Sony has addressed any of these issues? If they have, this looks to be an amazing camera.

I appreciate reps that behave with transparency. to Tony's questions or suggestions regarding camera body roles and the need for lateral movement between one body and a backup body, whichever route a shooter took, Mark answered evasively. I don't take anything serious from Sony events. Do you think all these social media celebrity photogs and bloggers spend their own money to go to these Sony release events? If a vlogger is straight up and says Sony flew us out and put us up I take their opinions much more serious than the ones that hide it.

I am heavily invested in the Canon system of lenses, so I don't own any Sony gear (yet). But Sony has taken the photography world by storm, and their most recent offerings have been quite impressive. They have amassed credibility and people are making incredible photos and video with Sony gear now. I was able to spend a day using a Sony A7R II with a few different top-of-the-line Sony lenses last fall , and I was smitten. The IBIS, tilt-screen, absolutely silent shutter, and amazing IQ made handheld photography much more productive and fun on a cloudy day than my normal experience would have been with my tried-and-true Canon 6D. There are still things I didn't like about the Sony, like the ergonomics (no doubt partially due to my unfamiliarity with the Sony UI), the really short battery life, and the far less solid feel of the body and buttons (my old Canon feels more solid and the buttons are more responsive and positive feeling) but I know that on my next camera I would LOVE to have IBIS, tilt (or even better full fold/flip) screen, and better IQ for times when light is not ideal and I don't want to whip the tripod out. The EVF was handy too, although may be a hindrance for fast action (not that I tried any on that day). Ideally, I would love for Canon to produce an FF body with IBIS and movable screen and DR and low-light IQ improvements, as I do not look forward to using adapters and changing lens systems. But when will canon get there? Not sure I want to wait forever.
@matts6282
@matts6282 7 жыл бұрын
Greg Smith no doubt the technology is impressive, though just as you said there are people making incredible videos and photos with Sony, there has been people doing it with all the systems for many years and also continue to do so. Sure in body stabilization will help, improved dr would be welcome, but were great photos not already made without them? I think too many people are obsessing over technology and not enough people obsessing over their skills lately.

From the Sony rep, larger battery that can capture 500+ images per charge. So 20 fps, 200 RAW buffer. So he's saying the battery can last about 30sec. :D I'm picturing a professional sports photographer going through 20 batteries a game.

😍 PRE-ORDER the Sony a9 (Ships May 25): amzn.to/2oU1n7a 😍 The battery lasts WAY longer than 450 shots--I got about 6,500 shots and still had battery left. It went an entire, very (VERY) busy shooting day. The camera uses less battery because no shutter or mirror. The buffer is not exactly unlimited. It stores about 220 compressed raw shots or 113 uncompressed raw shots. That fills up really quickly at 20 FPS. The real problem is that the cards are slow. When using the fastest UHS-II card it takes about 2 minutes to unload the buffer. When writing to dual cards it can take more than 3 minutes.

Having used compact CSC's with EVF it's hard to go back to DSLR. Solid state is here to stay. And now that the evolutionary clock just accelerated Canon and Nikon could be in trouble. As some body who shoots conceptual portraiture for exhibit with mixed media I prefer the look that Fuji gives me. This compact Sony however will be a killer for it's target market.

Neopulse00 as well as the A6500 and even the RX100 ($800)!! And every other camera Sony has announced since 2013! It's maddening that they excluded it - it's software and in no way would have hampered their ability to deliver other features. It's a cynical way to segment their market and, for me, someone who's made a huge investment in Sony and shoots both stills and doc film, means they're expecting me to also buy an A9S or some other body which will have log (which I can shoot on my flippin' iPhone!!).

Hey Tony & Chelsea, do you think you can test the A9 with 85 1.4 GM, FE 35 1.4 and FE 50 1.4 and show us how they perform wide open in various lighting conditions using off center AF points? Extreme corners would be nice but intersections of rules of thirds would be good enough. This kind of test would be more useful for professional wedding photographers.

I used to love Tony and Chelsea. But they have become so stuck on specs its ridiculous. Canon Color is MUCH better and the camera build quality is unmatched. Id take an 80d camera over any a series camera from sony just based on the build and quality results. I expect canon to release something to destroy the Sony cameras very soon and without compromise of overall quality. Canon always waits until the tech is ready 100% before releasing. You wont see a cheap canon with bad 4k just for the sake of being 4k. They wait until the tech is ready and solid. Come on Tony, focus more on taking great photos and less on spec groupie status.

You can use the Sony 300 f/2.8 & Sony 500 F/4 A-Mount Lenses with the LAEA3 adapter. They will use and take advantage of the 693 AF points.

I have a question. I've watched a few of these "a9" videos now, and given that the a9 is designed for sports/wildlife, nobody has mentioned if there have been any improvements made to the body/weather sealing because at least a few reviewers have stated that the a7 series in general isn't up to par as pro dslr's in terms of weather sealing. So has Sony made any improvements in that regard?

Keep in mind that there is also a a7 and a7 II that this one is replacing, the R and the S bodies will follow, with, my guess, even more specialized sensors. 60Mp on the R and different log profiles, full HDMI and an option to connect xlr mics to a special dock (maybe even a SDI out on it too)?

A9r with 42MP has one giant problem. The fast silent shutter would need to deal with almost double the amount of data in the same space. A silent shutter fast enough to not distort a golf club in mid-swing is a really hard problem to solve. It might take a next generation of silicon process (smaller scale) for a higher resolution version of this kind of silent shutter.

I wait for the New Sony Camera for almost two years now, I am used to the movie autofocus of the Canon 70D, so let's see if the Sony a9R will have that, because I would love many MP and a good video mode, and on my side, I need S-log, I am that type of person who try's to get good looking video, I even tried HDR Video and RAW Video with magic lantern, both need a lot of edit time, but I kind a love the result of raw, even tho my 70D has a lot of noice, even at ISO 100, so I hope for a fitting Sony camera. And if team tony read till hear, I say thank u, have a nice week and keep doing ur videos, love ur detailed reviews!

Looks like a sweet rig! I'm excited to see more about it. When Sony released the stacked sensor for smartphones that supported ~1000 fps at 720p, I figured we'd see a stacked sensor in the next couple years, not months! Cool technology. I do think the ethernet is definitely 20th century... IOT tech needs to find its way into cameras. Low energy bluetooth and 802.11ac could provide speedy enough transfers to do wireless tethered shooting. The challenge there is still the software, which definitely does not exist yet (and as a certain tech CEO says: "Silicon without software is just sand"). I really want to see that tech make its way into these bodies down the line!

This is cool, but like Tony said at the beginning I wish we could have seen an E Mount A99. 12 FPS is plenty fast, and we can still get incredible detail at 42 MP. Maybe that will be the A9R...

I'm ready to go full frame and I want to see whether Sony A7R III or Nikon D820 will be a better camera. I'm on a D5200 and I know that I will have to get FX lenses anyways. So I'm not locked into Nikon. Sure I can use my DX lenses with D810/D820 but then again what's the point of going full frame?

I own the A7rm2. It also has the silent electronic shutter option......that doesn't work in studio (or with strobes outdoors for that matter). I wonder if this A9 will be the same way.

I'd like to know which of the two cameras you'd like to have if you could only have one, the A99ii or the A9? I go to a lot of baseball games and sit close enough to where my Sony 70-200 f2/8 gets good shots with my current camera the A77ii. I also take a tone of landscaping shots in the D.C. area (can you see my problem)? Smoking 20 fps with the A9 or 42 mp quality with the A99ii PS. already have A to E mount adaptor available (wife uses A7ii)

Hard to be a 1dx killer when there's no long glass. There is no 200-400 F/4, 300 2.8 / 400 2.8, 500/4, 600/4, etc native glass for this camera. If I want a 300mm prime with Canon there are 3 2.8's and a F/4. This, and until Sony's professional services get established and Precision camera are no longer servicing camera, I'll take the wait and see approach. But competition is always a good thing - this may kick Canon in the butt to release better products. Do I expect pros shooting Nikon/Canon to gravitate towards it? Not yet, until the glass and service are sorted.

Excellent review of Sony's latest. I'm a new photographer, using a Nikon D750, with investments in F-mount lenses. As I think about the next camera body I would strongly consider switching to a different brand (Sony) but I hesitate due to the money I have tied up in lenses. I have heard there are adapters that enable the use of F-mount (Nikon) lenses on E-mount (Sony) camera bodies, but I have little sense for what trade-offs occur when attempting. I would love to hear your thoughts on this, by response or perhaps a future video update. Thanks again, greatly appreciate your (Tony and Chelsea) video series and have been using your eBook "Stunning Digital Photography" as my primary reference tool as a I learn how to shoot. Great stuff all around!

I was waiting for you to ask that Sony guy about the negatives you mentioned while sitting with Chelsea. The new XQD cards are apparently a lot faster than SD. The micro slots, which you hate and slower USB connection. Also the Ethernet you said is very "old school" technology. I also wonder, as many other people's comments have mentioned, what is the point of a super fast camera for sport & wildlife if you have no glass to attach to the camera?

Outstanding specifications, says this Canon user...Wow! Any whining related to the number of MP has no bearing at all, when we look at the only 2 competitors (19 and 21 MP). ...but the best spec of them all HAS to be the price...They are NOT asleep down there, at Sony. The price point is so perfectly placed, it should be a case study, all by itself. The best part of this video - Chelsea incessant, relentless beauty aside, of course - is the first instants of the Mark Weir interview, while Tony is making the introduction. It is humanly heart-warming seeing a professional so justifiably proud about a product he is responsible for. He looks like a peacock. :) Well done Sony !

Hey Tony/Chelsea - Question: They claim the silent shutter sensor readout is fast enough to eliminate motion distortion (e.g. the golf club example shot). Is it also fast enough to prevent horizontal banding from the pulsing of LED lighting? With the A7Rii, this has been a very noticeable downside of silent-shooting events like conventions or live theatre, where LED lighting is becoming prevalent.

Jesus, the interview was brutal. You would think as whatever position he was, he would be able to naturally talk about the camera without glancing at a prompter, and not just spewing information in one giant run on sentence rant. AHAH Tony's face was classic, he was just like GET ON WITH IT! LOL!! Then he just had this look of, "Tony I don't know what you are talking about, but I will just nod my head and keep looking at the camera." "If I say 4k 10 times, it will make it sound like the better video camera." I don't really understand how people like this are so robotic in response to the product they are in charge of.

Seems like a really nice camera. Personally i know this is something that shouldnt be the primary deciding factor. But for me despite how powerful this camera is, i really don't like how thin it looks. I personally love cameras that have some thickness to them to really give me a good comfortable grip. For me i just don't see its being that comfortable to use over a long period of time. id love though to see what its all about.
